_ Bureaucracy _ The 6th Annual WP:DICK of Distinction Awards
Posted by: gomi
Our staff member Hersch normally handles these duties, but it is well into January without a word, so I thought I would kick off the initial nominating process for our annual awards pageant.
For those unfamiliar with our awards, here are links to some previous year's winners:
WP:DICK of Distinction -- for all-around rottenness by an admin
The Tag-Team Event -- for group evil-doing, usually in support of some bias
Miss Incongeniality -- for the worst (non-gender-specific) biter of gentler Wiki souls
Most Vexatious Litigant -- a new award in 2011, honoring DICKs who run too often or loudly to the various "enforcement" schemes that Wikipedia offers, or those within those schemes who encourage them through bombastic and/or hubris.
and for the good guys...
The Straight Shooter -- an award for honest admins
The Cojones de latón -- for the non-admin who has distinguished himself (or herself) in combat with the cabal
There have also been new award categories proposed, including
The TL;DR Award -- self-descriptive. This was also suggested as the Impotent ArbCom Logorrheaic or Tedious Windbag award, but we determined that this would sway it too narrowly toward one individual.
Let the games begin!
Posted by: thekohser
Ashley Van "Fae" for Vexatious.
Sanger for Cojones.

Is there any point in nominating our good friend Ottava? Or has he already won it?
Posted by: EricBarbour
Don't even mention Ottava. When you "reward" him, it enables him.
I second Greg's nomination. Except that I'd like to put Mr. Van Haeften up for DICK. Because he has one, and has posted photos of it on Commons many times......
Posted by: Rhindle
I'd have to add Willbeback for vexatious litigant for what he did to Cla by adding content to LaRouche that cla was topic banned from, trying to get him retroactively in trouble for it.
Posted by: Fusion
OK, seriously can I nominate Cool Hand Luke for straight shooter. He's really cool.
Posted by: Herschelkrustofsky
Thanks, Gomi -- I've been a bit preoccupied, and we do need to get this underway or the lesser-known contests like the Oscars and Emmies may overshadow ours.

Actually, I should think that that stunt would catapult Mr. Beback into full DICK status. He's never won the main honors, although he has been a front runner (so to speak.)

What has he done lately? It's a serious question.
And wasn't there supposed to be some kind of "Weasel Supreme" award?
Also, I don't know if he's quite up to the DICK level, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Timotheus_Canens should be ripe for ... something.

All good calls, but with the exception of Fae, re-runs of previous pageants. Of course, if the shoe fits, I don't believe in term limits.

What awards can we give to non-admins? I think that Off2riorob's use of someone's comments about their serious health condition in order to score a gaming victory is worth some form of recognition.

He and I used to be a fairly good terms until he had a snitfit over something I said on Wikipedia Review that he somehow felt put him in a bad light. That, combined with his neocon politics, ended our relationship. In any case, I wasn't aware that he was doing anything at all related to Wikipedia anymore; I was fairly certain that his life had been completely consumed by the combination of being a young law associate and a newlywed, and also that he may have realized that continued association with Wikipedia might not be in his long term interest toward his fairly obvious quest to become a partner. In any case, not really a candidate for any of the usual categories.

Miss Incongeniality -- Baseball Bugs (who serves absolutely no purpose on WP except to stir up AN mischief)
Most Vexatious Litigant -- Titptoety (Wikipedia's would-be police officer)
The Straight Shooter -- Alison (though, to borrow an old line, what's a nice girl like her doing in a place like that?)
The Cojones de latón -- Malleus F. (the winner and still champ)
The TL;DR Award - Newyorkbrad (have you ever tried reading his "explanations"?)

It is not my place to tell you your job. However, are you not the Returning Officer for this election? If so, is it not inconsistent with your position to express strong criticism of a nominated candidate?
As for being a Jimmy fondler, that is not a good thing to say about a man so recently married. Anyway, I thought Jimmy preferred females.

I concur. I would also offer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard/Archive129#Revisiting_the_labelling_of_David_Ogden_Stiers_as_gay on the BLP noticeboard where Will maintained that he was going to add disputed information back to a BLP, but consistently refused to do so when asked. I think this went on for a full two weeks before someone closed it. Thus far, it has not been added back (which is fine by me, but I suspect if Will reads this he will make the edit of out spite).

Although it may mean letting an opportunity to be witty pass by, I would request that nominators spell the name of the nominee correctly so that I can figure out who it is and link to it. We like our voters to be able to make informed decisions, which means looking at the creature's edit history and record of snarky comments on talkpages and notice boards.
Also, allow me to repeat my reminder that a tag team must have more than one person.

If we're expanding the scope to include commons, Herbythyme is a no-brainer for the straight shooter award. He doesn't come up here much (and isn't, as far as I know, a participant here), but he's definitely on the white-hat side of the equation, and has been for a long time.

Some of these names keep popping up over and over. I'm sure they deserve it. But wouldn't it be better if there was some kind of "Hall of Fame" for certain folks (we can have an official induction ceremony, complete with personalized invites) and keep the space available for the up and coming dicks, cojones, tag-teamers and the rest?

Last year, for this very reason, we awarded the 2011 WP:DICK of A Lifetime™ Achievement Award to SlimVirgin (T-C-L-K-R-D)
and Jayjg (T-C-L-K-R-D)
, as well as the Lifetime Underachievement Award to Will Beback (T-C-L-K-R-D)
. I will point out that Ottava also received an award last year.
So I think, at a very minimum, we should elevate Will "Beback" McWhinney (Jr.) to the "DICK of A Lifetime" award, and remove him from consideration elsewhere.

I guess I haven't followed Off2riorob's career closely. I thought of him as a good-guy type, challenging BLP defamers, but he seems to have pissed many people off for unrelated reasons. I note that Malleus is also widely loved and hated.
So I think, at a very minimum, we should elevate Will "Beback" McWhinney (Jr.) to the "DICK of A Lifetime" award, and remove him from consideration elsewhere.
I sympathize, but I would hate to deprive Will of an opportunity to win the top honors by a popular vote. The closest he ever came was to win the tag-team title with SlimVirgin, and he may have ridden her coat-tails to victory on that one.

For Miss Incongeniality, I am surprised that Web "I am a self-proclaimed Aspie so my near-Tourett level of cussing and atrocious behavior is okay" Hamster hasn't been listed. WebHamster and Fred the Oyster http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/WebHamster/Archive.
Straight-shooter, I would like to nominate SandyGeorgia and Moni3. Both have quite properly told off people spouting nonsense regarding both Malleus and FAC issues (practically the same issue) without crossing the line but also not backing down. Sandy could be nominated for the Cajones because she is not an admin (even though she has near admin status for being a FAC director).
By the way, could PeterDamian be added for Cajones for the whole WMUK stuff? After all, using his real name (?) and challenging the whole group over legal concerns takes quite a bit of guts.

Sounds good to me. Anyone who has already gotten an award perhaps should be ineligible for future awards. You can call uncaring crazy people DICKs only so many times, before it ceases to have any meaning.
As if ANY of this had any meaning, of course. Some WPers watch WR like hawks, mostly for amusement, sometimes for people posting bad articles so they can rush over and "fix" the bad, for a quick and easy brownie point. (I don't post bad things anymore, 'cause I be savin' 'em. WR is just a database of past abuses, at this point. A resource to be mined.)

It's interesting that there hasn't been many nominations for tag-team candidates so far. I guess most of the more notorious tag-teams, such as the pro-Israel team, have faded away? I remember there was a team pushing a pro-Chavez POV in the Venezuela articles. I don't know if they are still active. I have encountered a small cabal in the SeaWorld articles, which I think I've mentioned before. Any other single-topic cabals out there? How about the PowerRanger/PocketMonster articles?

What about TCO and the FAC mess? Or something from the Malleus case? They seem to be spots that tag teams could be identified. It is hard to identify the tag teams because the historic ones have mostly been broken up over time after spending a lot of effort in identifying so many problems that they have been slowly addressed. I'm sure that there are still some of the old ones around but they lack the same power.

These four reined in their behavior for a time after the last ArbCom case, but they're back at it again, making sure that the global warming articles stay "on message" as they see the message. Notice that a lot of their reverts take place around morning in the UK time zone, which means they check their watchlists when they wake up in the morning and revert any edits to the climate change articles they disagree with.

It will be interesting to see how many fools will believe the useful idiot Sol Goldstone (T-C-L-K-R-D)
that me (ultra-Zionist) first proxy-edited for Nocal, who could create as many socks as he wants, and then requested to be blocked, when I had neither topic ban nor any other restriction from I/P topics.
In a meantime I propose the useful idiot award, and this year Sol Goldstone (T-C-L-K-R-D)
is the clear winner.
Also for tag tram event I propose the hacker and Sol Goldstone (T-C-L-K-R-D)

factomancer used to be another user. Facts on the ground. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&limit=500&target=Factsontheground
why the name change? cant seem to access FOTG contribution history. spent a lot of time edit-warring in 2009. definitely a SPA. reminds of user Halfacanyon who has since been banned. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Halfacanyon&action=edit&redlink=1
then there is Harlan wilkerson http://link. stopped editing in may.
here is my synthesis, most of the editors are merely alias of a current active user. probably nish, asad, nableezy, or even an admin. POV warriors drop in for 6 months, edit just enough to piss off people, but not long enough to get into an AE nor be seen as a sock puppet. then another account is created (Sol for example).
these people should be nominated as the ultimate tag-team/DICK awards. their influence has also largely gone unnoticed and unsanctioned, whereas the "pro-israel" has been highly exaggerated and inflated.
i find it amusing that "ultra-zionists" are up for awards but not palestine warriors. how surprising. who runs wikipedia review anyways?

Two more things:
1) I think that we are duty-bound to consider the ArbCom-L leaker for some kind of award. Our member here MaliceAForethought may be that person; and
2) I strongly believe that we need a process to reduce the number of nominees down to three or four per category before the final vote. That could be a vote and then a run-off, or simply politicking in a smoke-filled virtual room, I don't care. We can't meaningfully vote on so many (worthy) DICKs.

I think we can rustle up some special cyber-trinket for Malice that doesn't involve voting. As far as conducting a run-off election is concerned, this process is already complicated enough -- it's very labor intensive to construct the massive polling templates required. We have survived 5 years of elections without run-offs (http://wikipediareview.com/blog/20081117/the-wikipedia-review-awards-pageants/) Typically, a lot of the contestants get no votes, they were simply nominated by some enraged member with a particular grudge. However, I'm an open-minded sort. What do others think about this?

Well, I don't think there's any rule which says that WR participants are ineligible for the "bad" awards. Let the voters decide (having said that, this aspect of playing out the I-P or other intra Wikipedia grudges on WR is somewhat annoying and personally I'm not going to encourage that kind of thing - I'll ignore those kinds of nominations).

The DICK awards could be given only to admins, could they not? Besides the dicks and the useful idiots are different IMO. A useful idiot could be a dick at the same time, but could be not. I would not have nominated Sol Goldstone (T-C-L-K-R-D)
for the Dick award even, if it were an admin, but the useful idiot award will fit for it very well.

Yes, possibilities are endless,
but only imagine sweaty hands of Sol Goldstone (T-C-L-K-R-D)
, when it got hold of these emails, imagine how victorious it felt, when it wrote http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Sean.hoyland&diff=prev&oldid=413331464 (I laughed over it so much back then and I still am)

Well, Sol got its 5 minutes of fame only not on AE, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/IncidentArchive677#Community_ban_on_Sol_Goldstone.3F The hacker stayed behind, smart Sean stayed behind, the useful idiot Sol Goldstone (T-C-L-K-R-D)
made itself community banned with not a single vote put against the ban. The only thing I overestimated was the number of fools, who would believe the story. Oh, well... It's OK, still this story was very funny from the beginning to the end. Please let include "the useful idiot" award.

"hyperventilating"? I am not sure I know what it means but I had to provide some differences to show why I requested "the useful idiot" award to be added, and why sol is my nomination for it. Anyway I am done with sol now.
I'd like to nominate HJ Mitchell (T-C-L-K-R-D)

HABITUALLY? WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM, SANDSTEIN? I have ALWAYS gone OUT OF MY FUCKING WAY to point out the good qualities of your admin actions, which far too often are ill-judged, little though-out and which you take far too personally. You ''habitually'' (and, seriously, am I the only person here who own a dictionary?) dish out blocks that are unnecessary, punitive or, as in this case, downright abusive. ....I don't know how much clearer the community's opinion of your "block first, ask questions later" approach could have been made, but here we are, a few weeks down the line, with yet another block with no consideration.
At the same time I am nominating Sandstein (T-C-L-K-R-D)

Your side of the narrative does not need to be hashed out every time you feel like it. It just invites me to bring all the countering evidence against you. Which bores everyone. The thread on the topic is over there. And I wouldn't crow too loudly over my banning considering it was a) what I set myself up for and b) what I wanted. Hence I did not show up to defend myself, letting you play Andrei Vyshinsky to your hearts content. Now, back on with the thread.

ORLY, you set yourself up for and? If you set yourself up for being banned why you used an open proxy that was connected to you only because Alison knows what she is doing? Besides there are many decent and smart ways to get yourself banned. You chose indecent and stupid way. But she's right in that there needs to be some kind of award for people, particularly admins, who 1. Are not necessarily mean and dickish, nor tag teaming to push some POV, nor long winded but are simply ... very very dumb. 2. Kiss a lot of butt. Now, often people do this to achieve some other goal, like get their POV in or whatever, but there's a plenty of butt kissing that's done just... because some people are born as sycophants, or for the sake of power for it's own sake.

For the Cojones Award, I would nominate Steve Zhang for showing grace and maturity in the aftermath of his RfA.

For the Dick of Distinction, I would nominate John Vandenberg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Herb_Alpert_and_the_Tijuana_Brass_Double_Feature (a natural shoo-in for coverage in any serious encyclopedia) only because it was written by a "banned" editor (which is odd, considering his confirmed history of intentionally looking the other way when informed that banned editors were afoot).

A late nomination for Tag Team: SlimVirgin and Crum375.
This is a special nomination based on the fact that these past winners of the event obviously were getting nostalgic for the good old days with one last event before drifting off into the sunset. Even though Crum375 last seriously edited in August 2010, Crum was able to be dragged to the keyboard to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Crum375* when her beloved Verifiability policy was under scrutiny.
So for sheer blatant off wiki-canvassing, tag-teaming, "how could anyone suggest such a thing" I nominate the old timers once more. Quality not quantity.
*Or sock-puppet, you decide.

Stalking is waiting outside someone's house in the bushes for days at a time. Get a grip. Every journalist who has ever lived has had someone write their editor demanding their removal. Argh. I don't like to second-guess our esteemed nominators. I actually watch a rather modest portion of the grand Wikipedia Pulpo, and I would not be at all surprised to learn that there were some major A-holes to whom I have been completely oblivious. Cla68 and Will Beback probably deserve lifetime awards for being a Mensch and a Putz respectively, but sometimes an award voted up by the august assembly of the Academy means more than an honor bestowed by a handful of moderators at the Review. Cla68 has won before, but let him have a shot a filling his trophy shelf at home (Please don't pawn your Jimbos.) Will, on the other hand, has never won a category on his own, and deserves a chance, because his future at WP does not look rosy. As for other Mehs, Huhs and Wrong Categorys: Off2riorob got in a few good licks vs. the BLP defamers. TheKohser was nominated for his audaciously high-profile media activity. And there are some other dudes about whom I know nothing, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that someone else does.
Conclusion: I say let the voters have their say. We've had long lists in recent years, but the pageants have still been a roaring success.
I think we should create a new category, just for him. I mean no one comes close to his narcissistic majesty.
Just think, if he were the only nominee in a category, we wouldn't have to waste time discussing anyone else while we debated all the wonderful reasons for voting for Greg.

Feel free to remove Delicious carbuncle from the Cojones category. They won't have the time to open all those strip malls, anyway.
I beg your pardon?

My thinking is that we'll close the nominations some time next week, allow a week for electioneering, and then vote. I think this should allow us to announce the results sometime between the The Screen Actors Guild (Jan. 29) and the Academy Awards (Feb. 26,) which I think should be optimal placement in terms of riding the buzz factor.

Not hearing any objections, nominations will close Tuesday, January 17.

I would like to second the nomination of Jayen466 for Cojones, based on his role in the Images of Muhammad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Muhammad_images.

My bad - I meant for her to be in the Cojones category.

Of course, few people here kno what really goes on behind the scenes. I suspect that if they did know, they might have different opinions about some people. I am not going to nominate or endorse anyone, as it might have the opposite effect to the one I want.
Having said that, can I please urge a special award for the double act of S B Johnny and "Simone Larctia" (aka banned user Claritas)?
OK, as there are few (too few) people in the tag team section, I formally nominate S B Johnny and "Simone Larctia" (aka Claritas). I realise that mostly this took place on Wikiversity, but if you allow Commons I urge you to allow Wikiversity. This was far funnier than the porn wars.

I'm ready to do some votin' too. This is helluva more exciting then the last ArbCom election. Maybe next time we can have the nominators write up mock "Statement by the candidate" which would 1) cull down on some of the more egregious noms, and 2) provide lots of yuk yuks.
Posted by: Herschelkrustofsky
Egregious noms which wind up getting one or less votes have become a tradition. Also, despite having awesome gnarly admin powerz, I do not feel entitled to rule that any particular nomination is illegitimate, although I may sniff and curl up my lip at some.
In the next step of this hallowed ceremony, we shall engage in electioneering to promote the candidacies of those nominees we consider to be the most worthy. This is all to get the members of the academy even more insanely jacked up prior to the voting. After about 6 days of this, Eric Barbour will rent a small plane which will tow a banner across the sky saying "VOTE! VOTE!", and then we shall vote. Right now the Golden Globes are on TV, carefully timed to whet the American public's interest in celebrity popularity contests, for which our own is the exemplar.
