Well, duh. Look at the first paragraph of the WWII article, and tell me that anyone without advanced computer skills could figure it out. Wikipedia has completely perverted the original intent of wiki markup and turned it into a programming language that only geeks can use and understand.

It works for their purposes because the small group likes to control the content anyway.

Allow me to be a bit more cynical about this. Who cares? From the point of view of Jimmy/WMF what matters is not the number of contributors but the number of views that the Octopus gets. If it was just Jimmy Wales or David "The Waffle" Gerard writing all them articles all by their lonesome with a huge army of sock puppets pretending to be multiple editors, but yet all the folk out there still dutifully clicked on "the content" and kept making Wikipedia the #5 or so website on the internet, they'd still get what they want.

The fact that the number of contributors is falling only bothers the people who really buy into the "Wikipedia is a collaborative project" thing. Hell, in a way, a decent encyclopedia should have fewer contributors. My guess is that this is just a PR ploy thrown out there by WMF itself to get people thinking "oh Wikipedia is getting fewer editors - lemme click on it some more and see what it's all about" and keep the views up.

Betcha traffic stats for Wikipedia are way up because of all these news stories.
