Given how close the Delhi Commonwealth Games came to being a disaster (buildings only half completed 2 days before the opening ceremony, collapsing roofs and bridges, broken electrical wiring, filthy overflowing toilets, dirty sinks, looting of white goods by workers, Dengue fever, and gastroenteritis) good luck to them.

Sounds just like our local curry house too ...

If the recycled press releases are anything to go by, the standard of English is about to bottom out (what is a geared up protocol)... but let's be honest what this is all about.

More unpaid labor for Massa Jimbo's plantation. Drag in some cheap foreigners and sell them the same dream.

Con in the Indians in to work for free and take care of the darkies when they come onstream later. Let's face, the white, male, elite admin cohort is already in place with its unchallengable defense mechanisms and bureaucratic structures. Was it not the Indians the British and Americans dragged out to the Caribbean and down to South Africa to deal with the kaffirs?

As Nirad Chaudhuri might have said, the last English Wikipedian alive will almost certainly be a Bengali.

And did they spend more money indulged in a detailed research? Who got the free holiday?

Wikipedia to establish operations in India - October 28, 2010

In a first of its kind move, Wikipedia (the online encyclopedia) is all set to establish an operational set up in India for the purpose of strategic planning and deeper understanding of projects. Wikipedia is run by US based non-profit Wikimedia Foundation which is for the first time expanding its wings outside America.

However, the foundation already holds an entity in India which is called as Wikimedia India. But now, the foundation is looking for setting up a full fledged office in the country, for which it has indulged in a detailed research.

As for the expansion purpose, India can serve effectively as the country already has a successful community, a geared up protocol, higher growth rate and youthfulness.

The company is in mood starting up with some basic infrastructure and minimal man power, to serve local community and working with local volunteers for identifying and solving their issues. These issues could be related to technical support, software updates, barriers for editing, PR support like reaching the media. But the pilot would be with finding out the problems.

When a couple of months ago the Indonesians kicked up, they were soon shown who was boss.

I can only imagine the meeting in which they decided to save money by outsourcing WP editing to India...

I doubt that they actually, honestly, put it into words ... but I bet the logic ran through their minds.
Indians are cheap and we can get them for free by selling them some cult hogwash about saving the world.
There are lots of chubby nerdy computer boys not getting laid and working in booths with free internet connections.
    They speak English (sort of).
An entire sub-continent has LOTS of subjects and languages to swell the "Bigur Numbaz is Betur" press releases.
On one level, I am all for Indians to be incorporated into the project. There are a lot of educated Indians and they could do wonder by employing and giving equal rights to women ahead of men. I just think they should be paid for their work. India has enough real problems for its middle classes to address without being sucked into Nawab Jimbo Wale's black hole.

In fact, I think that 'ethically', in order to gain best return on donors investment, they ought move the whole damn caboodle over to India and chuck out all the overpaid North Americans except a single fundraiser/PR/whatever.

More Whites exploiting people of darker skin ...
