What are some alternatives to MediaWiki, and how do they compare to MediaWiki? Feel free to visit WikiMatrix.

A real alternative to wikis in general and MediaWiki specifically would require an elimination of the features permitting instant posting (take the quckie out of wiki) and permitting anyone to edit without vetting. It would also require a community culture in which the contributors were working toward an end product with editorial standards, not merely providing a host for content providers. This would further require licensing alternatives to the dismal assortment of free licenses.

Any number of the currently available Content Management Software packages could be configured to be used for this end. The social aspects present more challenges.

There are some threads to be found on WR addressing this. Probably just as well to start a new one as to resurrect them but you should still read them. Otherwise the spammy aspects of "feel free to visit" loom larger.

Can you so kindly provide links to the previous threads that discuss this topic? Your forum lacks tags and any form of semantic grouping, plus one can only search by keyword here. I'm new here; I have yet to experience all the wonderful threads other users created.

No, searching on this forum is as much a pain for me as for you. One clue might be found in that this thread has been moved to a sub-forum called "MediaWiki Software." Next time get bonus points by reading the previous threads before you post.
