_ The Jimbo Phenomenon _ Jimbo in Key West

Posted by: thekohser

Jimbo's http://t.co/DrvRib23 where I ate breakfast on February 10th (just a couple of weeks ago).

Jimbo's having http://t.co/cctgfaTr where my wife and I had dessert two years ago with the Associate Pastor of our church, rest his soul.

Jimbo's http://t.co/BvNQ1M0m where my bride and I set sail with guests for our wedding at sea in January 2000.

Clearly, he's just doing this to make me fear for my life, right?!

Are you trying to be ultra creepy? Or is this some inside joke I'm missing?

I think the smiley face was meant to imply the whole thing was just a joke. I'm hoping so.

Yeah, I saw that too, but it's a fine line.

(Edit: And honestly, when in the history of modern civilization did it become the norm for grown ups to communicate via crudely drawn ridiculous small pictures of yellow circles worthy of a 13 year old high school girl's notebook, rather than the way it's been done for millennia - by swearing and cussing at each other??? This world is going to hell and I blame the intranets.)

I'm simply posting info that is all true, but just coincidental to me, personally. Therefore, I found it humorous. Jimbo is apparently touring Key West, which is a lovely thing for him to do. He's the one posting to the world his exact whereabouts and whenabouts, and that's also a lovely thing for him to do, because his life and safety are not in any danger. It's a great town. I go there just about every year, and I did get married about 2 miles off shore there.

How about everyone settle down with the "creepy" accusations, and just appreciate a fascinating coincidence when one arises?

Such a shame that isn't where your burial was too.

That is very interesting. I had not realised that he had been buried. So where was he in fact buried? And how has he managed to continue his unique contributions here? Was he buried with a laptop, or has he turned into a zombie?

Perhaps you could explain to us just how st...er, tracking...Jimbo's vacation itinerary relates to the Wikipedia?

I know! How funny was that?

But that wasn't in the Keys, actually. Farther up.

I could explain it, but you would surely dismiss the explanation, so should I really bother?

Yes, you should. No doubt many people here are curious and would like an explanation of the relevance of all this, because I for one have not yet grasped it. There are certainly those here who have made an accurate assessment of your true worth and contributions to this site. Please do not be put off.

Why on earth is he doing that? Does he really see himself as a celebrity who everyone wants to know what he is doing 24/7? wtf.gif blink.gif

Yes.

To be fair, he's been doing this for ages. He believes in this stuff. He is, after all, a celebrity parent.

Remember that he doesn't really do anything aside from pontificate so it is important to keep up the image of being important, though it isn't really a good idea to believe your own propaganda.

I blame Twitter. It's not like Jimbo is the only person who does this, and he didn't create Twitter in order to do this. Not saying it's something I would do, but to each their own, I suppose.

Note he Twittered seeing going to No 10. That is good enough reason to be extremely concerned that a man with such a dubious hold on ethics is apparently in a position to influence British policitians.

I've just written to the Leveson Inquiry suggesting that they are leaving a big hole in their investigation into media ethics if they are ignoring Wikipedia and specifically suggesting they need to call Jimmy Wales.

Surely, Tarc would be snapping some chicken-bone Braff neck, if Tarc's girlfriend was Snooki, right?

What if I told you that ArbCom used to track my Florida vacation travel, right down to the IP address of my parents' router, then discuss it amongst themselves on a "private" mailing list that was known to leak. (Extra for experts: Jimmy Wales appoints ArbCom.)

Okay, so there you go, Fusion. Feel free to dismiss that now.

I guess the issue really is that, in the context of Jimbo's self-image, is that he thinks it is appropriate to advertise all his doings to the world rather than his friends. This is nothing new particularly, and obviously there are lots of fans of Jimbo who presumably find this entertaining. What I note is that as far as I can see, he only checks into name-dropping locations rather than his general movements.

What it does do, to me, is continue to undermine his image of serious leader of the Internet and places him firmly in the celebrity camp. As he hasn't really done anything of use for several years now, and all he has ever really done is accidentally help start a project (his real contribution I guess was creating the Wikipedia guru figure and nursing it into life) celebrity is all he has to work with, and celebrity earns good money. In fact, that sums it up, Jimbo has successfully developed himself as a celebrity and used celebrity to guide Wikipedia and earn money, so Foursquare and Twitter are exactly the right tools for such a person.

Agreed, but actually I thought there was some connection he had with foursquare (tbh I'm not entirely sure what foursquare's function is supposed to be), but maybe I'm thinking of something else.

I also seem to remember that Jimbo once mentioned that he's "friends" with the founder(s) of Foursquare. I don't have time to do it, but that should be pretty easy to look up.

He does seem to be linking himself to it as an admirer, but nothing seems to come up.

I did come across http://wireduk-1532599704.eu-west-1.elb.amazonaws.com/magazine/archive/2011/05/features/fail-study-jimmy-wales where he re-invents his role in founding Wikipedia and putting down Larry as the one who had the bad idea of wanting to be academic. Note how it makes it sound like the Wiki was his idea, while Larry was the stuck in the mud one. Did we not pick up on this before?

QUOTE
Larry [Sanger, editor-in-chief of Wikipedia's forerunner Nupedia] won those debates because he thought we should be very academic. He made the argument that we should be more academic than Britannica because, as it's from the internet, no one will trust us unless it's very serious. And I thought, you know, it's a good argument. Knowing what we knew then, which was very little about community management, it sounded quite reasonable. It was reasonable. He was right, given our knowledge at that time.

"But by the time Wikipedia rolled around, I thought, 'This has always been in the back of my mind: why are we not more open? Why don't we just let people do stuff?' I was optimistic, which is one of my failings and one of my strengths.

Apparently not, as he says http://flavorwire.com/178058/wikipedias-jimmy-wales that he doesn't know why he posts to foursquare, and isn't sure what it's for.

That "interactive interview" is hilarious, btw. laugh.gif

Craziest entry: apparently his idea of crazy is liking playing chess with friends - which got picked up by a magazine: "... so there was a reliable source for it, ha, ha." Even Jimbo has disappeared up his own exhaust pipe then smile.gif
