I see Wikipedia has graduated from plain old irritating banner ads to the uber-annoying pop-over important buttons click-through style ads.

How is this better than a for-profit site?

True. Pretty soon they're going to be flying in from the side of the screen. "Hey, click the "x" if you'd like to use Wikipedia!"
