I left Long Island on February 9, 2010. I left Wikipedia behind. I haven't edited any WMF site since February 2. On the morning of February 9, as I was packing up my apartment, I happened to see Cool3's retirement statement: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...oldid=342932500

The guy is very articulate. I agree with everything he says.

I also buy his story more than I buy ArbCom's doubts. It comes down to whether Cool3 leaked his password intentionally or just happened to be victimized by a good guesser. The latter scenario has happened before with admin access being restored once checkuser verifies that the rightful account holder is in control. Why that wasn't done here - I am curious to know.

Greg, can you please tell your side of the Cool3 story? It's been six months. If you're ever going to tell us anything, now is as good a time as ever.

In classic WP moronic bureaucratic editing of userpages - which accomplishes absolutely nothing of substantive worth to "building an encyclopedia" - the "Cool three" sockpuppet was marked as "indef-blocked", then edited to show "Cool3" (a separate username but the same person) as a sockpuppeteer, then reverted to a plain indef-blocked template. The edit summary is especially moronic: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...oldid=360767467 "Speculating about them being a possible sock is pointless, too late, and potentially confusing." But it's not speculation, see the full block log especially the earliest items: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...h=-1&tagfilter=

I am changing my WR signature to quote from Cool three's retirement statement. I would recommend that someone here restore the retirment statement to the active page. It's not as if he's going to edit again ever. Burying this sort of thing is the final indignity of an unfortunate career gone off track.

Greg took over the original Cool3 account and used it to become an admin. After getting caught, a person purporting to be the original "innocent" owner appeared, with an unlikely story. Nobody believed him.

Was this explained in that other thread? In order for what you're saying to be true, you are asking me to believe that somebody other than the "real" Cool3 - i.e. not the originator of that account, and also not Greg K. - must have hacked the "Cool_three" account and edited there. The account was created in March 2009 before "Cool3" became an admin. Look carefully at the early history.

It's possible if the interloper would have hacked "Cool_three" using the same password that Greg said he used to hack "Cool3". I'm just asking for clarification.

It's possible if the interloper would have hacked "Cool_three" using the same password that Greg said he used to hack "Cool3". I'm just asking for clarification.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...rget=Cool+three

Here Cool3, after becoming an admin in June 2009 (on the basis of 4 months of furious editing about the Czech airforce, meaning he's presumably Greg since Feb), test blocks the Cool three account and claims it as an alternate of the Cool3 new admin account.

Yes, Cool three is created in March 2009, a few weeks after the new upswing in airforce edits, and when we presume Greg took over Cool3. I had wondered if Cool three wasn't created as an alternate of the original Scottish Cool3 person so he could edit, and wasn't Greg.

But then Cool3 was checkusered as Greg and nailed as a sockaccount of a Greg US IP in Jan 2010. So that's it for Cool3. What happens next blows the mind, as "Cool three" then shows up and requests his adminship back. Makes the mistake of claiming all the NATO airforce edits (big mistake there) but he can hardly do otherwise, since all those got him the adminship, so he has to claim the account through its adminship and only have it be compromised SINCE then. So he claims he's on vacation and doesn't notice Cool3 has been highjacked until late Jan 2010, when he returned from vacation to find Cool3 blocked weeks before as a Kohs sock account. Buggerall.

"Cool three" said in Feb 2010 that, looking back, he realized that somebody was making funny edits using the Cool3 account as early as Nov. 2009:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...oldid=327460104

Putting i before e, except after c. Penetrated and perverted!

http://wikipediareview.com/index.php?s=&sh...ndpost&p=220222

The problem with all that, is that "Cool three" might have been believed if he'd claimed the Cool3 account had been taken over by Greg in Feb. 2009, 4 months before all the NATO airforce edits and the adminship. But then he'd have no right to the adminship. And would look really dumb to have neglected the Cool3 account for 11 months while using Cool three. Besides, how would he claim to have been running Cool three and not noticed that Cool3, now compromised and a new admin, had test-blocked Cool three in June, claming to be Cool3 AND Cool three? If that wasn't true THEN, Cool three should have said something then. So he is STUCK claiming that the Cool3 account was only compromised much later (like November).

So he had to claim the Cool3 edits from Feb at least up to adminship in June 2009 and that meant all that NATO airforce knowledge. But alas, that has to be Greg, because we know know Greg is a NATO airforce expert. Cool3 is therefore certainly Greg since Feb 2009, not Nov 2009. So either Cool three is also Greg, or Cool three is totally in on the deception.

And as noted, nobody believed Cool three in Feb, 2010. Nor should they have.

Not that Greg's feat wasn't, well, pretty cool. If it weren't for the fact that people had egg on their faces, and if this was only about the quality of WP, they should have let Greg keep his adminship and keep on editing NATO articles as Cool3. But a person will forgive you anything but making him a fool in public; WP's admins are no different.

MR

Mods, can we connect these two threads?

So it was actually you who helped me out with the Operation Freshman editing, then, a little while ago? You went to the library, got Wiggan's book out, and expanded the article?

To be sure, I've done far more than that for a fellow Wikipedian on occasion! I'm like the Otto Skorzeny of free culture, your sapper of sourcing, if you will.

I only wish your Operation Freshman involved something more like this Freshman class.
