Again, correct - since Rand considered altruism and charity to be false concepts in and of themselves, Rand probably would have considered it impossible to "use them falsely." That would be sort of a double-negative, I guess.

As I understand it, charity is helping others, while altruism is hurting yourself in order to help others. For Rand's view of charity, see here.

This message board is probably not a good venue for me to explain that. Fortunately, my comment was not that it is impossible, but that Rand probably would have said it was. She held honesty to be a virtue, and the practice of virtues to be in ones self-interest.

You're giving him way too much credit for honesty. Kira reads "Warriors". Jimbo goes across the street and gets pizza. After this goes on for a few months, Jimbo starts reading the series too, to try to figure out what it is about the book that his daughter finds so much more interesting than him.

And here I'm tempted to go into an examination of this issue from the point of view of classical Islamic shari'a, settled religious law. The modern problem with "terrorism" represents a gross violation of shari'a, involving sectarian affliliation and disruptive action without the consensus of the community, and without authorization by the "khalifa" (two alternate sources of possible community decision-making). Actually, has anyone ever published anything regarding the effects of widespread, easily-accessible public criticism (or for that matter, sex-chat transcripts) on the children of people being criticized? Not to mention widespread, easily-accessible public praise, facile and poorly-researched though it may be.

I suspect Kira is in a rather unusual situation, or will be when she's old enough to start making her own decisions. As a Randian objectivist, Jimbo is unlikely to provide much financial support for her at that point - right now, he can probably just say things like "those people don't like what Daddy does for a living," and get away with it. Later on she might start asking, "why don't they?" ...followed by "what's a 'troll'?" ...followed by "isn't that what you do?"

It is a sad, sad statement on the Wikipedia community that it has never gotten rid of Jimbo Wales. It's remarkable to me that now, in 2010, Jimbo is still around, while the project itself is stagnating quite badly. I thought at one time that such a vibrant project with so much potential would surely jettison Jimbo--who is so obviously a useless and unprincipled opportunist--in relatively short order, once it matured to a certain point. Instead I'm starting to wonder if the project will sink and Jimbo will still be sitting there when it does.

It just gives the impression of criticism being because of a personal vendetta/obsession and harms the ideal of criticism being taken seriously than just "ah, they're just trolling" - even if you don't beieve in constructive criticism to try create some kind of change, it's not very good for criticising why Wikipedia is bad and should be destroyed etc either, because most people reading WR can't take personality-fixation seriously, for the same reason no one takes the occasional cultist-like obsessed follower of Jimbo seriously either... It's just the flip side of the coin...

A fellow I knew that followed the shenanigans of a nuisance poster on USENET, regularly sent links or updates on the nuisance's latest idiocy, but as time past the updates just seemed to be more like stalking and an unhealthy obsession. Seriously, you're stalking an 8 year old and posting creepy comments about babies, what possible benefit do you think that has for criticism of Wikipedia? You actually harm yourself more than anyone. -.- But I can tell you're too far gone you've obsessed for so many years it can only tear yourself away from children after some kind of intervention or something I guess, one of these days you're probably going to find a FBI van skidding up outside your drive Gregory Kohs ... Cos if any law enforcement got around to reading through you stuff, you sound like a case for whatever the US equivalent is of the Fixated Threat Assessment Centre (T-H-L-K-D) - you haven't been getting any better, just increasingly more and more weird semi-threatening comments as the years have gone past.

I agree that the supporting Wikia so much is creepy when it's one of the biggest reasons for content being killed off on Wikipedia that he supposedly supports - as per my link from what I said, too, before ( I linked it in the above post wikipediareview.com/?showtopic=36689&view=findpost&p=296765 ) - but why not just say that?

How do you think normal people outside the world of Wikipedia reading all that stuff will think? Do you think they'd think worse of Wikipedia, or of you? *sigh* I'm just glad there's plenty of sane people here too and really hope people don't assume everyone on WR is like that.
