Um guys, I see some of you checking 98.243.217.155 that's my IP smile.gif

You'l find me, Josette, the accounts I just took control of, and our
houseguest. Not Thekohser smile.gif And yes, our houseguest has been disclosed to
certain ArbCom members.

That does get an oh snap, probably need to look into that.

.61>

http://toolserver.org/~chm/whois.php?ip=69.141.192.61

is a <redacted> IP. (So's mine) ... they shift over time, not too fast (nothing
like say Tiscali), but they do shift.

Cool3 needs investigation but before anything rash is done, I'd suggest that
we see where else Cool3 edits from. Get on IRC and talk to more experienced
CUs. It's likely that there isn't a connection but there might be.

Kohser is smart though, I can't imagine him actually running an admin from
an IP that's anywhere near connected to him.

Cool3 is probably a legit account. Can't say the same for the rest though.
The IP show recent edits from Orderly Conductor, and the main account
TheKosher shows up as well.

I'm not that experienced so you might want to do your own homework before
taking any action.

Well, Cool3 relocates to <redacted>, PA, where Kohs lives, except for one
brief stint from <redacted>, FL.

Kohs' parents live in <redacted>. (See <
http://www.wikipediareview.com/Directory:Gregory_J._Kohs>)

The two cities are around 5-10 miles apart, close enough for one to
geolocate to the other.

Coincidence?

I'm kinda wary of Cool3 for a few reasons;

The useragent is a little unusual as the editor is using Firefox with Google Toolbar (GTB);

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091201 Firefox/3.5.6 GTB6

but it coincides rather nicely with the 'Orderly Conduct' account, which has now already been blocked, per comments below. They all use a relatively stable Comcast cable IP. Also, per my knowledge, the account 'Lowell don't get lunch we'll order pizza' has a typical Kohser name choice. I've seen him use sentences quite a bit in the past.

Just my $0.02, and I've not looked in massive detail.

And

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Eight_Oh-Six

... currently unblocked is definitely Kohser based on edits relating to WMF, Jimmy and doesn't geolocate anywhere "near Atlantic City, NJ" per their userpage. Also the IP is shared with the others, per below, with a short 10-minute gap between accounts. This is waaaay to short to be related to DHCP pool recycling. Oh, and the same useragent with Google Toolbar. I'd say 'busted' on this one.

Well, yes. But it does show that he's not as smart about spoofing and
socking that we tend to give him credit for. Really, the couple edits that
Orderly Conductor made as a BLP experiment were quite pointless other than
to make a point.

I'd say we have enough evidence to call Cool3 out.

Ordinarily we'd reach out by private email, but since this is most likely
Kohs I'd rather him not find out how we know, because that would lead to an
alteration of his methods of gaming the system. I'd prefer we know what his
rules are and bend and break them appropriately (such as this).

It's an article related to Gary Weiss aka Mantanmoreland and yes, it was politicly significant to have it be kept. As Lar can attest, it was all over Wikipedia Review and indeed, one of Mantanmoreland's socks had actually nom'd it for deletion.

I'm very, very wary of the Cool3 account right now & I'd really love to know what Thatcher makes of this one.

This account also geolocates to <redacted>, FL from the one IP which edited on the 26th of November. From the rest of the time (23 November 2009 -- 21:54, 1 January 2010), it located to <redacted>, PA.

If someone could keep checking Cool3 and looking for other socks, that
would be excellent (I'm unfortunately a tad busy to check myself right
now). If he slipped here, it's possible we may be able to use Cool3 to
connect other accounts actually being used for his breaching experiment.

This has been brought to the arbcom list, where I would expect something
will be decided soon. This is very high priority.

Perhaps. I can get them for you at a reasonable price. I'm working up a
preliminary risk management plan on contract for installing retina scanners,
fingerprint pads, and face recognition devices at military base entrances.
I can get Wikimedia a sweet hookup for the price of the Strategy grant.

And to think people accuse me of never doing any work.

The blocks and deletions are pretty innocuous, the account didn't do much.
When it was active with the bits, it was in spurts that seem to relate to
move discussions or RC patrol. Nothing too iffy other than the one year
schoolblock, but those happen all the time.

This is a different UA, checking "Randi" gives us another IP: 169.145.3.21

This IP is:

IP Address 169.145.3.21<http://cqcounter.com/traceroute/?query=169.145.3.21>
Host 169.145.3.21 Location [image: US] US, United States City West
Chester, PA - Organization SAP AMERICA

That is shared by a bunch of people who work in the SAP office; none seem
like Kohs though, and he works for <redacted>.

The FL IP has no one else on the /24 and no one else on the /16 with the
same UA.

Of course, I defer to Thatcher and FT2 in sleuthing abilities.

We can get very Holmsian and look at this:

Looks about right, although officially, the netblock is 69.141.192.0/18 - scanning this for users really picks out the common accounts amongst the noise. So yeah, the narrower range below that you used really shows it up rather well smile.gif

Like you say, the 'Randi Polanich' account is unrelated and just happens to be someone relatively nearby.

Michigan originally...

If this Cool3 is actually him (as it seems is likely) I have to wonder if he
meant to throw that account away ? It came about by Furniture 1Z baiting me
on my talk page. Since that account was already tagged as one of his did he
think I ***wasn't*** going to check it???? As if.

I reiterate that he's not as smart as everyone gives him credit for,
something that has probably hampered our ability to track him in the past.

I definitely think Cool3 was never meant to be a serious account, looking
over edit histories. I'm wondering what would have happened to whatever
account was being used a year ago to bring this one back active. I'll look
into it in a bit.

As I've noted on the arbitration list, there was talk on WR about a fellow
named Limey selling an admin account, and Kohs expressing an interest in
buying. So it's probable that what actually happened is that Kohs only
recently gained control of this account, and that's why there was a gap.

One way of looking at this (which is depressing) is ... how many man hours
did we just blow on this hunt? I don't know what you guys bill at, but If
Kohs paid a hundred bucks for the account he paid less than the time I spent
just myself would have billed for. Plus everyone else too. And that's
depressing, what a waste of time.

Hopefully there are other ways of looking at it.

Multi-tasking, Lar.

These things for me are never wasted time, it's a welcome distraction from
doing paid work (above mentioned contract) which needs me online all day on
my day off from real work, plus I did a couple voicemails and emails for
OTRS and kicked around some BLPTF ideas in my head <

This thread, in thwarting Kohs, is something that I actually consider
important.

For the record, I am a non arb CU, and I confirm that in my considered
judgement there is sufficient technical match between Cool3 and Thekohser
that it is highly likely they are at this time controlled by the same user.

that is, I confirm "that Cool3 is a sock of TheKohser"

I also think it's likely this wasn''t his account all along but that he
bought it, given the early history of the account. And, Ya, Keegan, he's not
as smart as he thinks maybe.

When do you think he bought it? Activity graph

is interesting...

Oh for goodness sakes.

He also opposed allowng 'crats to respond to arbcom onwiki too. This
is why allowng crats to respond is a good thing.

Then again, Lar also opposed, the insensitive uncaring brute!

He's got a thing about transparency, Roger. Don't take it personally, he
doesn't know about the Kohs link (and I'm one that knows what he knows)

well, please be my guest..

Four endorses from enwiki functionaries and counting .... that oughtta work!

Can an Arb followup at WP:AN and Cool3's talk page soon and post an official statement? Meta is constantly monitored and the news is spreading rapidly.

Done. I was waiting for the request to be actioned.

We look more stupid than normal if we announce it and there's a snag and
it don't happen.

Um guys, I see some of you checking 98.243.217.155 that's my IP smile.gif

You'l find me, Josette, the accounts I just took control of, and our
houseguest. Not Thekohser smile.gif And yes, our houseguest has been disclosed to
certain ArbCom members.

What does Lar mean by "the accounts I just took control of"?

I wonder how many people have been blocked for less. But of course a steward is near enough untouchable.

Allie, I think you nabbed at least a couple in your drag net that weren't at all me. If you look at the User page history of one, it's pretty obvious, in fact, who the real owner is. And the other one was active on Wikipedia since about a month after I got my start on Wikipedia. Do you really suspect that I was socking on Wikipedia within the first 30 days of discovering it?

Yet another example of "due process" on Wikipedia. Thank heavens, Allie, you've changed for the better in the 18 months since!

If you recall, Jon Awbrey and I were using the "PACMAN" password technique, which essentially opened up some of our sockpuppets to "community" usage. The passwords were deliberately made to be easily-cracked.
