Uranus (T-H-L-K-D)

Hmm... which paragraph isn't appropriate in an encyclopedia entry about a planet:

QUOTE
Sir William Herschel observed the planet on 13 March 1781 while in the garden of his house at 19 New King Street in the town of Bath, Somerset (now the Herschel Museum of Astronomy),[20] but initially reported it (on 26 April 1781) as a "comet".[21] Herschel "engaged in a series of observations on the parallax of the fixed stars",[22] using a telescope of his own design.
That seems OK.

QUOTE
Uranus's axis of rotation lies on its side on the plane of the Solar System, with an axial tilt of 97.77 degrees. This gives it seasonal changes completely unlike those of the other major planets. Other planets can be visualized to rotate like tilted spinning tops on the plane of the Solar System, while Uranus rotates more like a tilted rolling ball. Near the time of Uranian solstices, one pole faces the Sun continuously while the other pole faces away. Only a narrow strip around the equator experiences a rapid day-night cycle, but with the Sun very low over the horizon as in the Earth's polar regions. At the other side of Uranus's orbit the orientation of the poles towards the Sun is reversed. Each pole gets around 42 years of continuous sunlight, followed by 42 years of darkness.[49] Near the time of the equinoxes, the Sun faces the equator of Uranus giving a period of day-night cycles similar to those seen on most of the other planets. Uranus reached its most recent equinox on 7 December 2007.[50][51]
Also good. I did not know this about Uranus. Wikipedia is awesome.

QUOTE
The planet Uranus is associated with homosexuality because, based on Greek mythology about Aphrodite, beginning in the late 19th century, the term Uranian has been used to denote homosexuals.[119] The final show of the Cockettes, a San Francisco drag troupe, took place in the summer of 1972; it was called Journey to the Center of Uranus, reflecting the homophone "your anus." In that show drag queen Lady Divine performed her song "The Crab at the Center of Uranus" while dressed as a lobster.[120] The Club Uranus was a popular queer dance club that took place on Sunday nights at the End Up in San Francisco in the early 1990s; it lasted from December 1989 to December 1992.[121]
Umm... excuse me?

As I thought, the "In culture" section wasn't in the FA-promoted version: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...oldid=160974584

We ought to establish a "Crisco Award" of the month, or something. This one's a winner!

A communications device used by gay men to talk about Uranus. Much like Wikipedia.

They are mistaking Uranus (planet) for Uranus (god). This is the only suitable location for such information. Uranus the planet was not named after the god until much later.

By the way, Ouranus lacked testicles (Cronus cut them off), so, I don't really understand why homosexuals would want to adopt the term now (google books shows many hits for queer theory analysis of literature using it).

Perhaps it is a reference to (ahem) water sports or lacrymosity.

A urinator used to be simply a free-diver. Uranus is the god of rains. And of course making your own water (urine) is named for the God, long before the planet. Urn is a cognate. Hydros (hudros) is probably a cognate.

I keeping getting confused over the difference between AN/I and AN/US. Is one for rivalries, and the other for collaborators?

I well remember my astronomy class in university. Our instructor would pounce angrily on any student who pronounced Uranus the way 99.99% of the population did.

He would scream, "It's pronounced YOO-RUN-US! YOO-RUN-US! ...you uneducated yokel."

It took away some of the tedium of plotting orbits.

In Futurama (set a millennia from now), The Professor invents a smell-o-scope that can smell astonomical objects (okay, suspend your disbelief). Fry says "Hey, point it at u-RANE-us." The professor says, "Oh, they renamed that planet centuries ago, to get rid of that stupid joke." "What's the new name?" "U-REC-tum."

Ah, I love that cartoon.

No, AN/I has a papyrus picture showing you facing Ultimate Judgement, naturally enough called The Papyrus of AN/I. If, in this process your wiki-heart is weighed and found wanting, some foul beast eats you, and you disappear from WP.

(IMG:http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll191/Shrlocc/ANI1.jpg)

If, on the other hand, your heart is Wikipedian on the scales, you get presented to the God-King of the Un-dead, Jimbosirus, and have to keep editing in the underworld, forever.

Moulton, AN/I is the plural of AN/US because there is more than one anus there. (IMG:smilys0b23ax56/default/smile.gif)

Behold the Glory Of Crowd Sourcing!!

Do we really need to know about Uranus being mentioned in Captain Underpants?

Do we really need to know about the new Vengaboys single?

And the homosexxy part was added by Keraunos (T-C-L-K-R-D) ,
"as requested". What? Who?

There's nothing of importance in that page; just a single revision where a header was added by this fellow.

Captain Underpants was only there for three hours.

Amazingly, the editor who added it failed to mention that there is a book by the same author as Captain Underpants with the word Uranus in the title.
