these new admins don't put up with a shred of fun or nonsense. I HATE THEM!!!!!!!!!

This is like the 4th time I've been indeffed in the past 2 years, and this time I didn't even do anything (except call people who use AN/I "douche," a fairly benign colloquial term that I frequently direct toward my cat and my sister).

QUOTE(http://www.jokebuddha.com/Douche/recent)
A drunk man walks into a bar and orders a drink. While he waits for the bartender to mix his cocktail, he notices a woman alone at the end of the bar. When his drink comes, he says, "Hey b-b-b-artender. Give that douche bag at the end of the bar a drink for me."
The bartender tells the drunk to keep his voice down, but the drunk is belligerent. "Give that douche bag a drink, dammit!" he shouts.
The bartender becomes angry. "Sir, I will not permit you to sit here and call the lady names."
The drunk persists. "For the last time, bartender, bring me my drink and give that douche bag down there a drink, too!"
Attempting to quell the growing disturbance, the bartender approaches the woman and apologizes for the behavior of the drunk. "The gentleman insists upon buying you a drink, ma'am. What can I get for you?"
The woman replies, "Oh,... I'll have a vinegar and water, please!"
I salute you sir, with your own cocktail, named for you:

Obesity Called Me a Douche

2 oz. cheap gin, say Beefeater Gin

3/4 oz. lemon liqueur, say Paula's Texas Lemon

1/2 oz. lemon juice

1/2 oz. balsamic vinegar

1 oz. cane syrup

2 in. lemon peel

Put all of the above except the peel in an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake until chilled.
Decant into a Manhattan glass and wring out the peel into the cocktail. Drop it in.

Place a glass of mineral water nearby as a chaser.

Okay, riddle me this, Fatman: if Avraham actually opened the Vanished_6551232 account for Rlevse, why is he now indef blocking it, saying vanished users have no reason to be posting comments? It doesn't make much sense, actually. Traditionally there's been a difference made between "editing" (which generally refers to editing articles in mainspace) and posting TALK comments. What this really means is: "We don't want to be hearing from you, Rlevse, especially not while we're in the middle of blocking Giano for disruption, when he insists you're not really gone...." tongue.gif

Good catch, Alison. It's blatantly obvious what that means.

Look, Rlevse wasn't the brightest bulb on the tree, but not the worst either.

On the other hand, those who sit in judgment of others find that the searchlight of judgment gets turned back on them. Oops!

But the hypocrisy is what shines through the most. Not Rlevse, who obviously recognizes that he screwed up, and royally, but the rest of the crowd on both sides. Attacking the current scapegoat and protecting their friends, and never stopping to look at the central problem: an abusive system, a monster that eventually eats those who feed it.

I emailed Avi to ask what he was at when he did that, and apparently he just assumed Rlevse was on a dynamic IP and that there was no reason to block *that* too. Put all of the above except the peel in an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake until chilled.
Decant into a Manhattan glass and wring out the peel into the cocktail. Drop it in.

Place a glass of mineral water nearby as a chaser.

This is true for organized religions, too. Those who can't get it out of their systems have to get excommunicated or lead anticult groups. Whereas, those who just see the light, tend to just go away...

And (yes) I care about Wikipedia. I care about the concept and the good content (which does exist). The thing is an imperfect monstrosity, like the French revolution. But you can see the glimmer of the future of France in there, somewhere. If you can look past the gillotines and so on.

I just wish that WP had been like the American revolution, which was a pretty cool revolution, as revolutions go. Far neater than anything of the time. I don't think anybody got up to those standards again until the Soviet bloc disintegration, and South Africa, a couple of centuries later.

Bad comparison. The American revolution had a positive and entirely new conception of what a nation ought to be, and this was lacking in the collapse of the USSR.

Actually, you just need to read the policies and guidelines and believe that the community, where it counts when you run into conflict, follows them.

Wikipedia vignette. Being led to the "gillotine," the editor points out that the word is not spelled correctly. The crowd denounces him as a wikilawyer, and anyone attempting to correct the spelling is also "gillotined" as a "meat puppet."

I got in trouble, that MYOB thing, when I saw editors who obviously passionately loved Wikipedia who were being roundly abused, instead of guided, and tried to help. The thing about extending special consideration to major contributors is bullshit, if the major contributor runs afoul of influential administrators. My favorite example: Per Honor et Gloria (T-C-L-K-R-D) . previously known as PHG.

* Totally unfair, in that the general rule is that users aren't blocked for responding uncivilly to being blocked.

* Gains practically no sympathy from me, because what do you expect when you poke bears?

I reserve my sympathy for those who have been abused when they rationally expected reasonable treatment.

I'd prefer, of course, that Obesity be unblocked, but I'd prefer that hosts of blocked editors be unblocked, that blocks be used preventatively, based on proven risk, with what is generally recommended, gradual escalation, and only when actually needed. Incivility on the user's own talk page is generally tolerable, particularly when it is general -- or directed at an admin who has blocked the user.

But, of course, politically it's a Bad Idea, and shows that the user cares more about spewing out whatever the user thinks rather than considering what the community needs to settle the disruption. But as the Encyclopedia that Anyone Can Edit, some allowance must be made for emotional immaturity. Even if the user is sixty years old, not to mention if younger.

I just would not deal with this with an indef block, and, in fact, the user should have been simply left for the block to expire. Ranting and raving about being blocked, on the users own Talk page, quite simply, is just, for some, to be expected and should be discounted. It does little harm because nobody is obligated to read it. If he comes off the 48 hour block and goes to, say, AN/I, and rants about the "douche" who blocked him, well, maybe a week block.... etc.

Why thank you for noticing; I never aspired to be known as the "sarcastic" or "snarky" guy, as I associate both qualities with unpleasant people. But something about THOSE PEOPLE just provokes these sorts of responses.

Moments of sanity. My comment that Obesity should have been left for the block to expire did not imply that there would be anything wrong with sooner unblocking.

Wikipedia, however, sets itself up for disruption far beyond what is necessary, by not providing clear guidance on such matters as incivility, and support for users to help them follow the guidance. Most people can and will behave when behavioral limits are clear, and socially supported.

When civility guidelines are strictly applied but only occasionally or selectively, that's not support. In a whole series of ways, Wikipedia has set itself up to be continually shot in the foot. It burns out users, on all sides.

It may or may not be utterly impossible to reform the structure on-wiki. If enough users would organize off-wiki toward that end, setting up structures to find and maintain consensus among themselves, they could pull it off. It's tricky, because such off-wiki strictures will be attacked, it's guaranteed. But it can be done. To me, the question is how many users would it take? Two is probably not enough, but benefit could start to accrue to the users, if it's properly done, with as little as three. I'm still waiting for a third person to say, hey, what's there to lose, I'll try it! Meanwhile the second person who "joined" has been indeffed. But it's still possible that one more would do the trick, just a little more difficult.

I'm not surprised, I've seen this everywhere.

Lift a finger, save the world. But few will lift a finger.

And of those who do, half lift the middle finger with the hand turned around....

Ya, Obesity has found his niche. Wikipedia is the perfect place for him, they deserve eachother.

That's an understatement. Eagles247 does very little other than:
1) micromanage Philadelphia Eagles-related articles,
2) troll AN/I,
3) and occasionally revert vandalism.
They made another mutant into an admin.

And the lunatic rant is still going.......
QUOTE
There is clearly no consensus for or against this block. Newyorkbrad's question needs answering: in this situation do we default to block or unblock? Defaulting to block smells a bit off to me. Anthony (talk) 19:49, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

I could go either way. The manner of the block is off-putting, but the conduct probably justified the block. I note also that TFM has not edited since being blocked - I'm hesitant to unblock until we have a request, all things being equal. UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 19:58, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

* I agree with you, Ultraexactzz, but TFM has promised not to troll twice already in the past (see Kingpin's diffs somewhere in here), and has never made good on his promises. Eagles 24/7 © 20:12, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

I wasn't so much interested in more discussion about the merits of the block. It's pretty clear there's no consensus on that. The question that began this thread was what do we default to when there is no clear consensus? Anthony (talk) 20:16, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

The default position is the one existing immediately before the matter was raised; TFMWNCB being not blocked in this instance. Blocking is a function exercised by an admin on behalf of the community, by means either of a directly expressed consensus or that by which the community entrusted them with the tools. As Brad pondered, once it is evident that no consensus exists for the new status then the old one must be resumed. Oh, and whilst I am pontificating - to Wehwalt: It is the other way round - the admin defers to the community. Every. Single. Time. LessHeard vanU (talk) 20:46, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

(edit conflict)It seems pretty clear that the answer to Newyorkbrad's question is that we default to unblock, because our default position is that "anybody can edit"; if we default the other way, surely we're modifying that tagline (and the rest of our attitude/positioning) to something other than that. It's similar, i reckon, to the default in an AfD being "keep", because with the lack of consensus the opinion of notability outweighs that of non-notability; here, with no consensus the ability to edit outweighs the other. Cheers, LindsayHi 20:51, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

In the NFL, when an official rules a play a certain way (i.e. an incomplete pass), the head coaches have the option to challenge the play if they deem it incorrect. The official goes in for a instant replay review, and there has to be indisputable evidence that the call should be reversed. Just a thought, though I doubt Wikipedia is for this. Eagles 24/7 © 21:03, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

The ones who are so keen on unblocking Fat/BErD should be compelled to assume responsibility for constantly monitoring its activities. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:09, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

I volunteer smile.gif Anthony (talk) 21:13, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Dontcha think that's a bit petty, Bugs? We all monitor; even if he is unblocked, as i think he ought to be, with his record, and assuming and giving benefit of doubt, it won't be long till he trolls again, and is blocked *with* process. Then we'll spend a minute or two picking up the pieces, and moving on. Meantime, i'll help, Anthony. Cheers, LindsayHi

I should clarify that instead of "ones" I should have said "admins". Is it petty? Well, he's got two indef'd socks. How petty is that? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:20, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Recently I was in Delhi and by the 3rd day had such a severe stomach cramp in the Qutub Minar that I made a rush for the public toilet. The stench was so overpowering that my cramp was pretty much cured, until I got back to the hotel. However, it wasn't nearly as bad as the stench that http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a181/scratchpad/0001.jpg surround themselves with.

I have never trolled as TFMWLBRASWL. I made, like, four silly edits as "Watching Wales".

Soon we'll be down to a cat page that contains only two items.

This page being set up by a user who says he hates sarcasm, but (as his username shows and he admits) is a big fan of one of the most ironic and sarcastic films of all time, Dr. Strangelove. huh.gif hmmm.gif wacko.gif Go figure.

Perhaps he's a fan due to being concerned with Purity of Essence?

My advice would be that you take a rest and leave off the aggressive behaviour you have been exhibiting in this thread, and concentrate on some more productive activity.
