The real problem with the photo of Saeed here, is that it's rather like the photos of that OTHER Saeed getting machine-gunned by the Apache helicopters in Baghdad. A picture tells a thousand words, and you can't spin it. Like a lawyer, you can try to embed it in a "context" that is malleable, and like a Wikipedian, you can try to keep anybody from outright saying what the photo shows. But you don't need to be a weatherman to tell when its raining, and you don't need to be a forensic pathologist to see when a dead guy has been beaten, his jaw dislocated, and his nose smashed. And thus see that it's rather unlikely that he did this to himself while attempting to swallow a bag of hashish.

All we really lacking at this point, is Ottava Rimmer, kisser of all authoritarian assholes everywhere (save when they're stomping on him personally) to show up, saying that this Egyptian Saeed had it coming to him, being beaten to death by police. And that if he'd been doing what he was supposed to be doing instead of protesting, he'd have been fine. Stupid Saeed.

Did anybody catch Bill Gates on Charlie Rose last night? I was a pre-taped interview (Rose is pretty ill with heart problems at the moment) but it was recent, since it talks about the present Egyptian protests, and it was really good. Rose has the single most intelligent show on TV, and has for years. If you listen to Gates for a while, you can even forget the Blue Screen of Death. I even forgave him for Microsoft Outlook. This is one smart dude, and he's working at the world's problems where he has maximum leverage (right now attempting to eradicate polio, which we ALMOST pulled off like smallpox, in the late 70's).

At one point, Rose asks Gates about the Egyptian regime, and Gates comments that the money we give them every year is about what it would costs to eradicate polio. Gates notes that we're paying for "friendship," but it's the "friendship" of the government, who spent the money on luxuries for themselves and cronies. Not the poor of Egypt, who need the money more, and have been getting more and more angry these last 3 decades that they don't see much of it. That pretty much sums it up, all right.

PS: Gates is getting enormously politically savy. He never says a thing about the nuttiness of the people in Nigeria that let polio get out again by being paranoid about the West-- he just calls them "politicians disguising themselves as religious leaders." Guess the only "true" Muslim religious leaders are the ones that agree with the Gates Foundation. Gates has actually been going around with famous and powerful Muslim leaders who are demo-ing the polio vaccine, which is now being produced in Muslim Indonesia, with Muslim watchdogs at each step.

Gates even says he "understands" the FDA and its holdups to vaccine trials. Incredible. Here's a software guy admiting how naive he was confronting the convoluted world of medical research (which moves like molasses in compared with software, despite the deaths and emergencies), but he shows no anger (on camera). I know he has to feel it, but we don't see it. He's totally self controlled. In contrast, my own approach would be to simply note that the FDA is corrupt and cares nothing for people, and that Islam tolerates a bunch of nuts who end up killing a lot of Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and we should stop coddling this. Gates avoids this confrontation.

My favorite Gates line from this interview, after we comments the figures make him sweat: "I wish I was innumerate."

There are days when I enjoy looking at Americans having their heads cut off, and other days when it isn't so appropriate, like when I'm having boiled sheep's head for dinner.
