Jimbo has posted on Cla86's page again.

I took you seriously

So I thought I'd go see what's up with WR. You gave a passionate defense of it as somehow useful to Wikipedia.

What was just about the first thing I found? You speculating in a disgusting, juvenile, and insulting manner about my personal finances.

I was disappointed, but I also must admit: it's about what I expected from you and from WR.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 13:48, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Dear Gregory,

Thanks so much for your interest in Jimmy Wales. Mr. Wales is a wonderful
speaker as you know, and if we are fortunate enough to be able to secure him
for your event, I am sure he will be extremely well received.

Mr. Wales speaking honorarium for a US engagement is $100,000 plus first
class
round trip expenses
.

Please let me know if there are any questions I can answer for you. I do
hope this is an opportunity we'll be able to further explore.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Ann

Now, granted, that does not show that Jimbo would "only" fly first class, but it's pretty clear that was his agent's expectation.

Well, here is an interesting question, or maybe even a few.
1. Is this wrong that Jimbo is getting payed for his talks about wikipedia?
On the one hand wikipedia is a non-profit organization, and it looks as Jimbo is using it for profit.
On the other hand he is not WMF employe.
2. Would it have been wrong, if anybody who is not an employe of wmf and not Jimbo get payed for talks about wikipedia? If not, why Jimbo should be treated differently?

3. It looks that at least in 2008 Jimbo still had WMF credit cards in his possession.
QUOTE
In an interview with the American newsagency The Associated Press, Wales denied having his credit card taken away but refused to comment specifically on Wool's other allegations.

I wonder what he used it for. How common it is for somebody who is not on a company's payroll to use a company's credit card.

4. I wonder how Jimbo's trips to wikimanias are payed.

On a different note I guess Jimbo wishes he has never posted to Cla talk. (IMG:smilys0b23ax56/default/ermm.gif)

I don't particularly find your questions interesting. But, that's all right, I'll give some answers.

1. There is nothing wrong with Jimbo earning as much as he can by talking about Wikipedia or Wikia or currency trading or the Warrior Cats. What I tend to have a problem with is when he speaks for free at a Wikimedia Foundation event (like Wikimania), and a substantial portion of his talk centers on Wikia. I also cringe when he goes way out of his way to say how he doesn't take a dime from the Wikimedia Foundation, when it's pretty clear from the record that the main reason that is, is because Danny Wool exposed him for his abuse of the Foundation's expense account.

2. I certainly hope there's nothing wrong with "common folk" making money talking about Wikipedia, otherwise I'd have to return the $900, airfare, and lodging that I accepted from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

3. See above about Danny Wool. A company (profit or non-profit) that expects an employee, or spokesperson, or co-founder, or emeritus chair to jet around the globe, wining and dining fat cats, so that they will consider doing business with (or donating) large sums of money vis-a-vis the company, will generally outfit the representative with a credit card. This makes more convenient the ability of the representative to take care of things like meals, taxis, hotels, airfares, etc., just as long as each of the expenses charged can be documented as "in the service" of the company. Wales was probably doing fine, until he pushed the envelope a bit with $350 bottles of wine, and a Moscow massage parlor receipt. Wool should have a bronze statue honoring him, for blowing the whistle on those misdeeds. Sue Gardner should be forever shamed, for covering up Wales' reckless behavior and portraying Wool as this amorphous "disgruntled former employee".

4. I believe prior to 2008 or so, Wales would have his Wikimania travel and lodging and meals completely covered by the Foundation. Post-Wool, though, he had to figure out how to pay for all WMF-related travels out of his own pocket.
