Baloney. Newspapers print what sells. If it bleeds, it leads. If it's scary, it's cherry. Furry or worry, we supply in a hurry.
If that were true, the 911 Truther movement would be getting front page coverage.

There are limits. Implicitly this means the newspapers tell people what they want to believe or are titillated by. Nobody really wants to believe the government helped in 9/11.

The "Truthers" don't have a unified narrative, however, any more than the "JFK conspiracy theorists" do. All that does them together is that they want a more complicated story, in which somebody here in the US is to blame. Perhaps people in the government, if not the WHOLE government.

In some ways these are the same types of concerns. The JFK assassination seems like quite a thing for a lone gunman to pull off, especially one with little money, a rifle almost as old as he, and a crappy manual labor job. However he had the element of surprise, plus training and complete self-confidence and lack of fear, and all that can get you a long way sometimes.

Much the same can be said of 19 Al-Qaeda agents, plus their few handlers and planners back in Egypt and Afghanistan, and their small budget. It doesn't seem possible that they did the damage they did. However, they had precisely the same advantages Oswald had.

Now we see the display of the male know-it-all attempting to attract the female-in-heat know-it-all into the full courtship dance. Only sadly there are no female know-it-alls. So on and on they repeat the display and sometimes mount other male know-it-alls.

What is this "ban communicat" you keep typing? Sorry to disappoint; but as far as I know, there's only one rule at WR: don't be boring. On that basis, Thekohser himself should have been banned a longggg longgg time ago.

Sorry to disappoint, but there are any number of non-boring ways to get banned from the Review. For better or worse, being an asshole is seldom sufficient.

If anyone deserves these people, it's jayjg.

Makes me yearn for a thread titled "Jews vs. Foreskin Restorationists Cage Match."

That's a very Freudian view of debate, politics, and academia. And WP and WR.

So, what are YOU doing here? evilgrin.gif

QUOTE(gomi @ Tue 18th October 2011, 11:52am) *

I don't think that this solves the problem that is Wikipedia. Like Lenin, there are acolytes who will carefully tend the corpse of Wikipedia long after its demise, and it will be used to commit offenses far into the future.

We can only hope that Marx and Hegel were right about history recurring first as tragedy, then as farce. And as the capitalist wag said, perhaps yet a third time as theme park or other entertainment.

Consider Evita Peron. She died. Then had her body farcially used like Lenin's. Finally they buried her, and we got a musical (sing along: "Don't cry for me, Argentina.....")

I talked to somebody the other day who visited the Kremlin and Red Square this last Summer in 2011 as a tourist, having last visited the Soviet Union as a tourist in the 1970's. He said that the 1970's treatment of visitors was so bad that in the departing airplane, as they made the announcement that they had left Soviet airspace, all the passengers got up and began to spontaneously cheer. He said that was one of the most eery travel experiences of his life, mostly because he felt just the same and joined them.

He said the Disneyfication of Red Square in 2011, however, was well on the way.

Can Lenin: The Musical, be far behind? wink.gif And the same for Wikipedia? Oh wait-- there's Wikia already! Plus the electrified corpse of Jimbo, accepting academic honors...

QUOTE(Milton Roe @ Tue 18th October 2011, 10:09pm) *

QUOTE(communicat @ Tue 18th October 2011, 5:59am) *

If people like Roe, in the comfort their bourgeois surroundings, took time off from redbaiting and made a real effort to read and understand Kapital, they'd discover there what Marx/Engels predicted very accurately 130 years ago. Namely: over-expansion of credit enables the capitalist system to sell temporarily more goods than can be bought with the sum of real incomes created in current production, plus past savings. In the long run, debts must be paid; and since these debts cannot be automatically paid through expanded output and income, capitalism is destined for self-defeat. Interestingly, (and in marked contrast to the reading tastes of the "intellgentsia" of the most heavily indebted nation in the world), Kapital is experiencing of late a dramatic resurgence of interest and a corresponding escalation of sales in Germany. Even German Finance Minister Peer Steinbr├╝ck is reportedly now reading the book -- something the suits in Wall St (and maybe even some of the highly educated folk at WP/WR) should have done a long time ago. Too late now.

Bullshit.

The idea that Das Kapital predicts a world credit crisis is an urban myth which you have apparently fallen for:

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/karl-marx-quote.shtml

If you'd read the damn book (which I actually have) you know it talks about problems with overproduction of goods, not overexpansion of credit and debt (at least not problems with bourgeoisie debt, which would be Marx's description of the 2008 crash). The proles aren't homeowners, much less investment bankers, in Marx.

And I see no place in the modern world that actually has problems with this "overproduction of goods," that Marx says will bring society down. Where would that be-- China? It surely isn't the US. Unless you count techno-soldiers, fastfood, and security guards as "goods."

I've not quoted Marx directly, nor have I relied on an online urban myth supposedly quoting Marx. I've simply summarised as it relates to the present some of my own reading of the original version in German. The rest of your posting is more or less incoherent to me. Just for a change.

Milton, don't you know the old saying "Those of you who pretend to know it all infuriate those of us who really do"? I think that's a fair summary of half the disputes on WP. Not to mention most of the disputes here.
