I know you and Geogre (T-C-L-K-R-D) were not the best of friends, but I find his 2008 view of Wikipedia insightful and prophetic.

QUOTE

Well, Wikipedia, as a corporate entity of users, has worked consistently to establish hierarchies. The people who volunteer there find the idea that no one is in charge intolerable. They really hate it, and each thinks that, since no one is in charge (except Jimbo), he or she should be in charge. When Wikipedia died, it did not do so because it got too large, but rather because it got too small. Power developed, and people selected themselves for it. They wanted, desperately, passionately, to know where they stood in the ranks. They wanted to know who was above them and who below, and they wanted to know what it meant. It was important for each and every one of them, and therefore all of them had a seriously vested interest in making sure that there was a single point of power above them all, a CEO.

The Arbcom election does seem detrimental to Wikipedia's initial message of being a flat hierarchy with an egalitarian society. People wanting power (for good or ill, real or illusory) in a society that supposedly is all equal. All the titles of "administrator, bureaucrat, arbitrator, steward, etc." contradicts the flat hierarchy model. Yet, Wikipedians are confusing by demanding more power to the community and also pushing more and more cases and responsibilities to ArbCom. It's either complete anarchy or a social and technocratic oligarchy.

I would say it is screwed, if not because it's a schizophrenic community that does not know what it wants. ArbCom is constantly attacked by both extremes and endures overload and burnout. It can't win.

Edit: Change George to Geogre. Sorry, George! Thanks, Ottava!

I wasn't "friends" with Geogre (different spelling) mostly because he used socks and admin buddies to try an intimidate me into not improving the horrible Jonathan Swift articles because he decided to own them even though he lacked any formal studies in the matter while my graduate studies mentor was one of the premiere experts on Swift (and he, along with two others, wrote in letters to the Foundation stating that I was, indeed, correct on one of the key disputes whereas he really didn't know what he was talking about). He didn't like what I did with the Drapier's Letters page.

He was one of the worst offenders and surrounded himself with others who used socks to get ahead or to cause a lot of damage (Jack Merridew, SDJ).

Geogre was the worst of what Wikipedia has to offer - amateur child who has absolutely no background in a topic area yet takes over, relies on socks and abuse, and pushes whatever horrible, stupid view he can while abusing experts. If you look at the ArbCom-l leaks, you will see that the "G word" is dreaded in coming up because he was the exemplar of everything that was wrong with Wikipedia. His blog is filled with really stupid political ideology combined with baseless thought that makes it appear that he was a Philosophy 101 drop out who felt that he suddenly knew everything because he could drop a few names (while mangling anything the individual had to contribute).

The fact that he is still blogging only verifies that the trouble maker is still roaming around on Wikipedia, probably under a sock puppet name that is know by Giano, Bishonen, et al. Hey Giano, why did you ever team up with that imposter? You never once disowned him or admitted that he was a sorry excuse for a Wikipedian. I know you still read this site.
