This is not really a topic, just a statement, that I don't know what to do with. I have never started a topic before, but if I post this anonymously on Wikipedia, they will fight each other to delete it, and I want them to know how I feel, after a good night's sleep, about the way the project operates.

This is all a sorry state of affairs. I know I have said it before (many times), but I am through with Wikipedia now and there is no way back. Some of the things I was finding had begun to affect me in real life, and I was getting bad tempered in RL (you will be surprised to learn that in RL, I am a delight to know) when I unfairly snapped at one of my kids who wandered into the study for a hug, I realised the time had come. Yesterday, it was like trying to give up smoking and then having the cigarette explode in your face. Don't worry about the analogy I know what I mean. However, I closed and bolted the doors with a few things left unsaid - the final straw (exploding cigarette) was that idiot who have baited and trolled, then proved he had never written a proper page, that his friends all rushed to block I knew would happen, I don't suppose any of them had ever written a proper page either. Then, seeing the whole ANI thread full of names I had never even heard before, confirmed it was long over time to go. Incidentally, who on earth is Aitias, Ale and Amatulic, God knows and who cares now?

I had warned for years that one day IRC would all troop out and elect (like clapping seals) an Admin who did not know how to write a page or even the Wikipedia basics I don't fool myself that Happy Toaster is the first), but that they did so, so spectacularly was beyond even my wildest prophesies. That there had to be debate about the validity of the RFA is as bad as the initial travesty - which actually is a RL crime, intentional or not. Wikipedia is now a place where the writing is so discounted and so unvalued that these occurrences will become commonplace - so few even seemed shocked by it. Without me Wikipedia will be a happier place, they can block each other and rant about civility all day, trample all over the articles and generally destroy the place unhindered.

I made loads of good loyal friends there and here, some other "friends" who used me for what they thought I could deliver for them and more than often did (you can ponder that one) and it seems a mountain of real enemies. Through sheer hard work, I acquired more Wiki-power than some members of the Arbcom and I tried to use it well, although often it was never obvious quite what I was up to. but you can't keep fighting ignorance, especially when the ignorant are given loaded weapons (block buttons) at the drop of a hat. Which brings us neatly back to the present.

If I were to ever return, I shall be far more successful - it will be as a new editor called [[User:Invasive Creeper]] I shall write one stub then join IRC. In six weeks I shall be an Admin and in 6 months on the Arbcom sitting on the right hand of the God-King; that is the way it is done. Now, I shall go to the Italian Wikipedia; just as so many other editors before me have been "driven home." The other Wikis are all really catching up now - and they are so much more tranquil and pleasant. So good luck and farewell.

Giano

In theory, I'm a big fan of what you tried to accomplish. Still, it's your own damned fault for wasting so much of your time and effort there in the first place.

Want to prove you're for real? You've been unblocked by David D., so log in and leave a legal threat on Jimbo's user talk page. Get yourself perma-banned from that shithole and go spend the time you'd invest into Wikipedia with your family.

I suggest also saving all the articles you've worked on to your hard drive, if you haven't done so already, so you'll have them ready to post on whatever wiki-like project comes along that has a better governance model than Wikipedia, if that ever happens.

Or uploading them to Wikipedia Review, where you can keep them in a directory where nobody can get at 'em!

Giano, you know that I'm a big fan of your articles and your wit in general. I meant my section about you in this article as the highest possible compliment, although I completely understand if you'd didn't take it as such.

My advice to you: stay away for all WMF sites. They don't deserve you. And take all of your "on-wikipedia" projects and turn 'em into a book. Write the autobiography of Lady Catherine Augusta Amelia Gladys de Burgh. Keep control of all of the copyrights and send manuscripts to real publishers. You don't need these people, but you also needn't stop doing what you're doing because they don't "get it".

Giano has now been reblocked by Sandstein, who has a history with Giano. Xeno's edits were extremely poor quality, whereas Giano used completely appropriate language for the subject; the sort of wording that can be found in anonymous obituaries in UK papers, invariably the best written parts of the paper. I was reminded of the Duchess of Argyll (although some of the newspaper images associated with her are not as pink and fluffy as Raine's legendary mother).

Agree. The edits were very poor, and were intended to goad Giano.

In the case of Giano, blocking him, with all the drama it generates, does unfortunately create some history.

Yeah, but Sandstein went away soon after the block in question and thus in practice remained aloof of the resultant drama. Thus, this block can't really be depicted as someone getting one back for the team ... on this face of it it's just an uninvolved admin carrying out a Coren-esque reblock.

Giano

Are you really so myopic as to believe the other projects and languages won't, given time and growth, converge to a state of affairs similar to that of the English Wikipedia? And is everyone who retires for reasons like yours too naive and thoughtless to realise that the wild dramas and unbridled chaos are inevitable elements of a project of this size and openness? Perhaps if editors gave more consideration to the consequences and implications of becoming heavily involved in as sensational a collaboration as Wikipedia from the outset we'd be spared these wistful "goodbye" diatribes – which, mind you, are almost frequent enough to be featured as a weekly item in the Wikipedia's Signpost newspaper.

In all seriousness, Giano, your rationale is reasonable and that's fine. But don't sign out with maudlin whining.

Sandstein doesn't know his ass from his elbow, and Xeno couldn't tell the difference between an encyclopedia article and a glass of water. It is astonishing how much time is wasted in complaining about two people who, in real life, would never be trusted to scrub a toilet, let alone manage a publishing endeavor.

As for Giano...this is like one of Barbra Streisand's biennial farewell tours. Except that Giano could probably belt out "The Way We Here" better than Babs.

This has now gone to Arbitration, because Sandstein is upset that the punitive block on Giano was reduced.
