QUOTE(RDH(Ghost In The Machine) @ Mon 25th January 2010, 10:48am) Since the old motto has become a tired and embarrassing joke, there was a recent discussion the teh Jimmy's talkpage about adopting a new one that better reflects the true nature of WP. The discussion was closed before it even really got off the ground. Which is a pity because Wikiland really does need a new motto. My suggestion, which I found on a colleague's userpage, would be: Written by the unwell, read by the unwise. Any other suggestions? (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/wink.gif) Wikipedia: Where else can you find encyclopia articles on quantum mechanics and relativity that anyone can edit?

Rhindle did a mighty good Joe-job in this thread. WIKIPEDIA MUST DIE A SLOW PAINFUL DEATH AND ANYONE WHO EDITS THERE IS A COMPLETE JACKASS AND SHOULD GO TO JAILIs good, but I like his "I can't believe it's an encyclopedia!" better. Would you like to be 1/3 or the troika along with either Milton or Jonny (depending on who responds first) and myself that will choose the nominees for the poll? Personally, I thought "the discussion was closed before it even really got off the ground" would make a good motto, given the current state of things over there. It was necessary to destroy the knowledge in order to save it.Jon (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/ph34r.gif) (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/applause.gif)

Our Man in Rotterdam put it quite well: QUOTE(Guido den Broeder @ Thu 6th August 2009, 12:37pm) Yes, but that won't help Wikipedia, which features the difference of all human knowledge rather than the sum.
I figure this means on its best days a WP article will only reflect the portion [of human knowledge] which nobody powerful enough has an interest in vetoing. I figure by the end of the song, Leeroy "Free Encyclopedia" Brown will look like a jigsaw puzzle with most of the pieces defaced, inverted, redacted, cut in half, or painted out by request of EMI. That's what the broken globe logo is all about, right? This post has been edited by CharlotteWebb:

Wikipedia: Remember Rome? Well, in our case, Romulus really did kill Remus. Wikipedia: At least we're not NBC. Wikipedia: Mzoli's Meat and more! Wikipedia: Providing Free Drama since 2000! Wikipedia: You, too, can save an African child. Just right click on the child's picture, choose Save Image As, and then release it into the GFDL/CC-by-SA license via Wikipedia. I would argue that most of you are doing it wrong. There is no wit to devising a slogan that Wikipedia would never think of adopting. You have to write one that is stupid yet can possibly be adopted as a slogan. With that, I bring you in Jon Awbrey-style glamor: Wikipedia Forever! Oh, wait...

QUOTE(Subtle Bee @ Wed 10th March 2010, 12:53am) Speaking of shat-upon noobs, anyone know why my inaugural New Topic posting in The Lounge was apparently deleted? I figured I'd be safe there.
Anyway, while I'm here again, I'd like to pitch:
"Wikipedia: fuck you, troll, fuck you."
I'm halfway through dealing with it. It was reported as it seemed to be rather spammish. I agreed and moved it out of the way. If other mods disagree then it can reappear. Not a very warm welcome I appreciate, but often we assume that posters have already got a feel of the place before they dive in. Anyhow, welcome. Still, I can't possibly be that unfunny. A couple of points: re-quoting a scad of text rather than referencing it is poor technique, better to quote a little gem and then give a little sales pitch to attract people to click. (Eric is an ancient and established member where most people know exactly where he stands, who contributes many focused observations on the happenings of Wikipedia, who is an expert on valves, so there was a lot of context to his post that you wouldn't have picked up on - which is fine, because you are a noob). As H said to you via e-mail, this is not a social networking site, and I think what this means is that we clearly do natter and chatter about all sorts of crap, but that works best if you first establish your character through your views on Wikipedia, which is the purpose of the site. So, yes it was a heavy handed response, and I am sorry about that, but we can all look on this as a wonderful learning experience, can't we? (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/yak.gif) For example, we have no idea if you are a person who thinks Wikipedia is a wonderful idea with no flaws, or you think it is a tragedy for mankind, or if you are a person who does not think at all. (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/blink.gif) What one lesson would you like mankind to learn about Wikipedia?

QUOTE(dogbiscuit @ Wed 10th March 2010, 5:22am) QUOTE(Subtle Bee @ Wed 10th March 2010, 1:17am) If, on re-reading, anyone still honestly believes I'm a spam mole for the molasses industry (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/wtf.gif) , and not a noob trying to break the ice with a chuckle (in the off-topic forum, next to an exerpt from an EBay ad!), it's probably best if you do just block me, which is too bad after all I went through to get here. I was going to put it in the Annex when I noticed someone else had already deleted it. I thought it was not much worse than some of the other feeble attempts at starting threads meant to be "on-topic." Wikipedia's treatment of the molasses industry as an important topic is no more off the mark than some others.

QUOTE(Somey @ Wed 10th March 2010, 10:01am) QUOTE(Jon Awbrey @ Wed 10th March 2010, 7:12am) Harumph!² — Could some nice mod please move the non-bon-motto flaming to the tarpit — some of us are busting our brains here trying to find Wikipedia a new motto. We shall move that and related posts (including this one, and the deleted one IMO) to the WRR forum as soon as Mr. Bee has amassed enough posts of his own to view and post to that forum... Anyway, it's just that nobody ever did anything like that here before, and we're a little hypervigilant when it comes to new registrants, given the fact that the real spammers are far more numerous (and probably far more clever) than we are. I'm sure Mr. Bee understands - it's nothing personal! Thanks for that, Mr. Somey, I think that made sense. So yes, I do understand. But I agree with (and apologize to) John A & RDH [IAWAATJAARDH] - I feel bad that the thread got derailed, and am happy for the crap to be clipped, whether or not I can see it. I'd be even happier if no one had seen it, but that ship has sailed. Of course, it would be unproductive of me to point out that a quick message informing me of the deletion would have prevented me ever asking, and thus the whole subsequent public analysis of my various shortcomings... But nobody likes paralipsis. ps as pennance for my sins against this thread: "Wikipedia: one monkey short of Shakespeare."

Good. I would have said "Always a few monkeys short of Shakespeare" but yours better conveys the manic and unjustified optimism of the place. A fine motto indeed! Welcome to the Review Mr. Bee! Good. I would have said "Always a few monkeys short of Shakespeare" but yours better conveys the manic and unjustified optimism of the place. Thanks. What's neat is that there's already a companion article for it on-wiki that nicely expands the metaphor. Particularly the section titled "Real monkeys". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinite_monkey_theoremQUOTE(RDH(Ghost In The Machine) @ Fri 12th March 2010, 12:47am) A fine motto indeed! QUOTE(EricBarbour @ Fri 12th March 2010, 6:13pm) QUOTE(The Joy @ Fri 12th March 2010, 12:32pm) Oh, poopy. I was gonna start a new thread about that article........ Go ahead. I find it ironic that the Wikipedia cult and the Scientology cult are not friends. Then again, Wikipedia was founded by technological libertarians opposed dogmatically to any limitations on information... be it good, true, false, or bad information. Scientology tries to suppress bad information (true or false) about itself, ergo Wikipedians have openly declared war against it. Even more ironically is that Wikipedians do the same thing to its critics just like Scientology! I see that Cirt (T-C-L-K-R-D)
had a hand in the article. Yes, a separate thread on this could work.

Jimbo finding a flaw in WP:CONSENSUS reminds me of blubberfaced Greenspan admitting that he'd found a wee error in his view that the market always regulated itself. Guess Jimbo sets the goals, now. Other than that, it's YOUR encyclopedia, folks! (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/confused.gif)

Just FYI, Milton: your present avatar photo contains a small detail (actually two of them) that you probably don't know about: it contains two Roland D-50s. A massively popular keyboard, despite endless complaints about its "bad sound". And still used by thousands of bad bar bands the world over, because nobody with taste or discernment wants old D-50s. Making them dirt cheap to buy on the used market. (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/evilgrin.gif) Yes, I looked it up. Indeed the '57 Chevy of electric keyboards. Dunno if the guitar is a Fender. I think they should have given LHO a halfstand mic ala Freddie Mercury. It's not as though they tried to do everything in period, as the keyboard is post-1987.

I had the same reaction - I remember the D-50 from backinnaday. If memory serves, this was at the intersection of analog and digital (at least at a realistic price point), so it seemed a big deal at the time. But they were mostly immune to programming, unlike my beloved Kawaii (so cute!) with its sliders and dials. Alas, they were as ephemeral as the big hair of them what liked them.

QUOTE(Milton Roe @ Sun 11th July 2010, 1:47am) QUOTE(RDH(Ghost In The Machine) @ Wed 7th July 2010, 5:24am) Wikipedia: Vajazzled Vulvas in Volvos with Vuvuzelas! "It's one thing when kiddies at home or school do a bit of Wikipedia vandalism, but this is a reputable IT company with people who should know better," says one Wikinsider. "Or perhaps they don't realise IP addresses are tracked and logged in which case they get what they deserve."After blocking a Volvo IT business address permanently for IP vandalism. And thus we see (once again) that all the WMF puffery about CONTENT holding sway over all rules (WP:IAL), is indeed just so many lies. WP will indeed react differently if the same vandalism comes from a school library rather than some corporate building. It isn't what happens to the encyclopedia they care about, so much as WHO DOES IT. As we've said all along. Or to paraphrase a certain humble farmer- We win, bitches. This sentence no verb. "were" is a verb. You could construe the sentence as "There were no tigers during the making of this book", though it's a bit contrived.

Drachma Engine Sorry, Jon, that's a miss. I won't say that the Greek economy flourished when it was on the drachma. However, beyond doubt things have got worse since Greece dropped the drachma and switched to the Euro. Had nothing to do with switching to the Euro, beyond the possible idea that being "Europeans" gave the Greeks silly ideas that they could live their favorite "European" life style. Consider the French, who by law have 5 weeks of vacation, 35 hour work weeks, and retire at 60. (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/ermm.gif) The Greeks figured: "Why not us?" Well, because they couldn't afford it, is why. The French can't either, actually, but it won't bite them in le cul until later. I'm preparing to be amused then.

Do you think that the Greeks have ever not considered themselves European? Do you think they were ever an exceptionally hard-working country in modern times? The Spartans disappeared a long, long time ago! Do you have any evidence that the amount of holidays increased, or the length of the working week reduced, or the retirement age fell, recently? If so, as I say, it wasn't and couldn't have been because they suddenly thought of themselves as European. No, it was definitely the fault of the Euro. Firstly, it means the Greeks can no longer devalue their way out of problems, since the single currency obviously locks their exchange rate to the rest of Euroworld at 1:1. Secondly, it allowed the Greek economy to get hopelessly overstretched because investors thought that they were as safe as any other Euro country.

QUOTE(Milton Roe @ Mon 9th August 2010, 10:00pm) Thanks very much Milton. I think that proves my point completely. I asked "Do you have any evidence that the amount of holidays increased, or the length of the working week reduced, or the retirement age fell, recently?" Your link says QUOTE As a consequence of decades of bargains struck between strong unions and weak governments, Greece has promised early retirement to about 700,000 employees, or 14 percent of its work force, giving it an average retirement age of 61, one of the lowest in Europe.
So it is not a recent phenomenon due to any sudden realisation by the Greeks that they are European and can hence be more like the French.

Ehh, quit spoiling a perfectly good ongoing thread, okay? I'm sure Mr. Awbrey simply used the word "drachma" because it's recognizable to most people as a form of currency (even if its use has now been discontinued). In other words, Wikipedia uses drama as a means of increasing participation, which in turn is referred to in fundraising letters as evidence of their "success" and "global reach," thereby bringing in currency. Sheesh! (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/hrmph.gif) Oh, I'm sure they all knew that. Just a nostalgic demonstration of the Wiki-Pixillated Hermenøøtix Game, where the players of the piece are required to look for every possible interpretation of your words apart from the clearly intended one. Videque.

You put in a big copper 5 drachma coin and the thing spit out ceremonial water. Thus, a drachma machine. Occasionally Jon is quite subtle.

Question ... Where History is Written by the Losers?
Or the more harsh ...
Where History is Written by Losers? QUOTE There is a saying, the victors often write history.
With the wiki model, whoever has the most time to spend editing the work of others writes history.
So basically, it's the losers that write history these days. W I K I P E D I A : A momentary sense of superiority. The self-aggrandizing vandalism of another person’s potential pleasure.
