POLL: Do you believe in the Wikipedia concept? Not Larry Sanger's or some other wiki's, but Jimbo's? Not whether you think Wikipedia has good people running it, but whether you believe in / like / agree with the concept itself?
Go read stuff on Wikipedia if you don't know what the concept is. I thought a lot and decided a yes or no and only that is best. Reason for poll: A lot of people say people here are against wikipedia and some people even say so. For the record, I believe in Jimbo's concept. |

I also believe in the Wikipedia concept. It is really unfortunate that so many users have become exiles from what is, despite its flaws and many crappy articles, a really fun and educational project.

Like we can't wait until we are taller than the stick so we can ride the cool rides. I'm not exiled from anything. I'm a citizen in good stead on WP. I am perfectly capable of conforming my behavior to accepted standards. I'm here because I don't like smugness, hypocrisy, and phony participation. I find WP stifling and repressive. It's notions of "consensus" and "discussion" I find offensive. I voted "No" above. I believe that the "destructive aspects of a a dysfunction social networking environment" is part and parcel of "Jimbo's vision." The sea of troubles that this vision unleashes includes BLP abuse, exploitive and addictive behavior, pov cliques, academic dishonesty, cruft, poor governance and financial irresponsibility. really. really. |

I believe firmly in the concept, which is why I'm willing to start something to help drive out (hopefully) the people that want to abuse it.

The Wikipedia concept fails when vile beings like Raul654 acquire power, then bring their slimy minions into powerful positions as well. See this, in a biography of a living person whose ways are opposed by the hive:
There is an old and pretty insignificant matter about Ann Coulter voting in the wrong precinct in Florida. See it in Wikipedia HERE. The matter having aged and nothing come of it, and the article being very, very long, calm heads suggest the coverage of it be removed. The vile Raul forcefully decrees that it shall stay. See the whole thing HERE. |

There is an old and pretty insignificant matter about Ann Coulter voting in the wrong precinct in Florida. See it in Wikipedia HERE. It probably should be removed, or edited down to a single sentence, but still, it is Ann Coulter, so it's a little like asking a dermatologist to remove an armpit mole from an advanced-leprosy patient. And this one bit - "she says that she did so due to fear of an alleged stalker"? Jeez, where have we heard THAT before. Sorry, is my left-wing bias showing again? I must've been listening to another one of those Al Franken audiobooks... Huh? Perhaps that was meant as a dismissive riposte to the idea that the primary motives for participation in writing one of the world's most heavily-referenced informational resources should be that it's "fun and educational"...? No offense intended, of course.... ![]() |

I used to believe in the Wikipedia concept. Then someone pounded the e-shit out of me using the "Wikipedia concept", and I lost all faith in it.

I certainly don't believe the revision history that a website highly unlikely to succeed was created to disseminate knowledge to children in Africa. Most content is not added out of any altruistic influence, but it is more an expression of "look what I know". This is not a specific explanation of why the site was actually created, but it paints a general enough picture.
Do I believe in the sharing of knowledge by many people, aggregated together in a central place? Yeah, I guess so. That's sort of what the internet is. Before WP, if you wanted to find information on a topic, perhaps written by a knowledgeable amateur, there were always decent geocities and angelfire sites for that. Sure, the info may have been a little tougher to find and it often had corny gifs, terrible page designs, and pop up adds that made you want to kill yourself, but it got the job done. WP is convenient but by no means is it necessary or even important to the concept of spreading knowledge. It's simply a moon; the knowledge doesn't come from Wikipedia, it is just reflected. It's always been there. |
