What are some alternatives to MediaWiki, and how do they compare to MediaWiki? Feel free to visit WikiMatrix.

A real alternative to wikis in general and MediaWiki specifically would require an elimination of the features permitting instant posting (take the quckie out of wiki) and permitting anyone to edit without vetting. It would also require a community culture in which the contributors were working toward an end product with editorial standards, not merely providing a host for content providers. This would further require licensing alternatives to the dismal assortment of free licenses.

Any number of the currently available Content Management Software packages could be configured to be used for this end. The social aspects present more challenges.

There are some threads to be found on WR addressing this. Probably just as well to start a new one as to resurrect them but you should still read them. Otherwise the spammy aspects of "feel free to visit" loom larger.

You have to be really careful if you're going to vary from MediaWiki. A lot of these fly-by-night wikis are here today, gone tomorrow. Even when they seem to have an active community, when the founders lose interest, the hangers-on drift away.

I found that out with PmWiki. It's an interesting idea that uses flat files instead of a database. I still love it in many ways, but the areas that needed improvement never got addressed.

Yes, MediaWiki is a little too close for comfort to the Wikimedia Foundation, but I'm willing to live with it. I also realize that many programmers are horrified by the code and that there are more elegant solutions out there. Still, it's what Wikipedia uses, and as long as Wikipedia is in the top 10 most popular sites, MediaWiki will be around and supported.

Of course, I don't know you. If you're a really good programmer, and can do a lot of the work yourself, then it might be worth messing with a wiki that's going to require more TLC.

examples of similar wikis: Encyc (MediaWiki) and Encyc PmWiki

Can you so kindly provide links to the previous threads that discuss this topic? Your forum lacks tags and any form of semantic grouping, plus one can only search by keyword here. I'm new here; I have yet to experience all the wonderful threads other users created.

No, searching on this forum is as much a pain for me as for you. One clue might be found in that this thread has been moved to a sub-forum called "MediaWiki Software." Next time get bonus points by reading the previous threads before you post.

The problem with any collaborative project is not so much the software, but the people involved.

Geocities was fine, but it has been closed. You can give Everything2 a try. So far every person who sent me messages has been helpful and polite in pointing out mistakes and suggesting corrections.

For you MMORPG junkies, there's a score, experience, and leveling system as well.

While I have personal problems with the author of this software, he's a really smart guy who knows his shit.

No, it was for attempting to remove my contributions after he tried to guilt-trip me for hosting them for free. I was unblocked after I apologized, so I could edit it now if I wanted -- I just don't particularly want. :-)
