Happy Boxing Day, everyone! The annual "WP:DICK of Distinction" awards pageant is a semi-hallowed tradition here at the Review (new members, http://wikipediareview.com/blog/20081117/the-wikipedia-review-awards-pageants/#more-191 for some background.) To compete for the grand WP:DICK of Distinction prize, the contestant must be an active admin or admin defrocked over the past year.

Here are the categories for nomination:

and for the good guys...

I agree entirely with your nomination of the artist formerly known as Doc glasgow (T-C-L-K-R-D) , for his ground-breaking role in confronting the BLP marauders.

In the WP:DICK category, I would like to nominate Georgewilliamherbert (T-C-L-K-R-D) , who has long gone unrecognized as a versatile and devious hitman in the service of numerous POV-pushing rouge admins. Tiptoety is also a good call.

I would like to propose a new award category, if anyone is interested: Most Vexatious Litigant in an ArbCom Fiasco. I don't have a favorite for this, but I do think we've been remiss in not awarding a DICKie for ArbCom-related activities.

I would also like to propose the category Forgotten, but not Gone (or something better), for those who have largely faded from view, but remain more subtly evil, for example Jayjg (T-C-L-K-R-D) and SlimVirgin (T-C-L-K-R-D) .

As re IronDuke (T-C-L-K-R-D) , I second that eructation.

Instead, can we give it to all of the Commons admin and the Stewards who abused their ops to try and keep the excessive porn?


I think they deserve it for their extreme political ideology, their jeopardizing any credibility the WMF may have, and for being just overall dirt bags who will say whatever to defend stolen porn images possibly of children while simultaneously accusing Google of being evil for taking pictures of their homes without permission.

Please read before responding.

I specified those who abused their ops. There were many - those who wheel warred in deletions, blocking those who complained, blocking those who merely pointed out that allowing pedophiles to run rampant was a problem, etc.

Hell, one admin even replaced the main page with a cuss filled rant against Jimbo for daring to remove the excessive porn. If you think that is acceptable behavior, then you can refer to such mentality as exactly why you were removed from being a Steward.

I think that manic WikiLawyers, Porn Protectors, and Knob Polishers can all be subsumed under the general DICK category. I don't want to make things too elaborate, and plus the construction of the actual voting poll is extremely labor-intensive as it is. However, I am sympathetic to Gomi's comments about Slim and Jayjg-- perhaps some lifetime achievement awards may be in order. Those aren't submitted to the voters -- it's in the hands of the Program and Catering Committee or Loya Jirga. I'm sure that Slim would be honored to share that award with the only previous recipient, PoetGuy.

Two Dicks of Distinction were a pair of former mop-swingers that went out with bizarre displays of self-destructive behavior: Tanthalas39 and Rlvese. This will probably be the last that we see of them (under those names, at least).

Our man Coffee also retired in 2010, albeit not as dramatically, but he was a wee dick in the months leading up to his sign-off.

And, of course, Cirt, for reasons that do not require repeating.

The Straight Shooter Award: Juliancolton. Last year, we had a lot of fun at Juliancolton's expense, but a check at his recent contribution record shows that he is dramatically easing off the Wiki-addiction and is playing on Wikipedia in a far more mature and measured output. Today is also his birthday, so happy 17th to a genuine diamond!

Cojones: Our favorite paisan, Giano, for injecting some much-needed oxygen into the ghastly dull Arbcom election.

Hold on. Does anyone else think we should review the past DICK awards, so we can at least be aware
someone is getting a double award? If nothing else, it will help to maintain a bit of "historical balance" .
I'd feel better if certain people were excluded from winning multiple awards. SV is already
out, both for behaving herself in 2010 and for being such a popular pest in the previous 4 years.
I would say similar things for both JzG and Gerard. And Cla68, Thatcher, Alison already got kudos
as straight shooters. Should the following be excluded from subsequent award votes?

In the past 2 years, Cirt has successfully defamed an unknown number of people
in their BLPs, simply for association with the Church of Scientology, Transcendental
Meditation, or EST. Plus, don't forget that Cirt has been caught doing what appears to be

I can't think of many other admins who have done such a good job of

off for any substantial length of time.

I can see your point, but it's important to remember that we are competing with the Oscars, the Tonys, the Emmys, and the Grammys. There is no tradition at those pageants that forbids a strong contestant from winning year after year. Plus, we have many new members of the academy here who have not yet exercised their franchise. If they want the exquisite thrill of casting a vote for David Gerard, I don't want to stand in their way.

On the other hand, it would be disappointing if the thing got too monotonous. For example, are Cla68 and Giano the only rank-and-file Wikipedians who possess any Cojones? If this were the year he ran for ArbCom, I would nominate the Fat Man, but his latest activity is mainly just rambunctious.

Miss Incongeniality seems about right. That is where all the people trying to justify the porn or defend those who abused their ops to defend it belong. Add Gmaxwell, Thogo, Shoemaker's Holiday, Kameraad Pjotr, Mercy, Abigor, Mattbuck, etc.

A real under-the-radar type is the Australian editor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Johnfos, who fights a good fight on renewable energy issues.

Ah, Last year it was so easy: I gave all my votes to Mike Godwin, for his "work" in the Gerard affair (=Extremely disgraceful; coming from someone so high in the pecking order. I always demand more of the people at the top! )

This year; dunno. I have hardly been back for about 1/2 a year....but some admins/editors over at Commons surely qualify for the awards? Or perhaps then it should be renamed the "WP: A BILLION DICKS of ALL Different Colors and Sizes"-award?

I'm actually allowing a month or so for the nomination process, to give everyone a chance to seek recognition for his favorite contestants. The actual voting will commence at the end of January, and the awards ceremony will take place around one week before the Oscars -- we're stealing their thunder.

To be a DICK of Distinction, the nominee must be an admin. The competition includes all the admin-y things, such as abuse of admin powers to push POV (a perennial favorite.)

I'm surprised no one has nominated ScienceApologist/Joshua P. Schroeder for Miss Incongeniality. I know no other WP editor who more deserves the title of all-around Jackass than that guy. How does he ever expect to get a job with what comes up when you Google his name?

Do you remember the stories about when the "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" book came out, that some kids would yell "Dumbledore dies!" at the other kids waiting in line to buy the book, ruining the surprise for them? There are very few WP editors who I think are big enough jerks to act that way. I don't think Will BeBack or William M. Connolley would do something like that. ScienceApologist, however, based on what I've seen, is capable of acting that way.

This is why I think the DICK award is a bit, um, redundant.

There are so many dicks on wiki, you can't really single one out for special opprobrium.
Look further into AN/I or SPI or a few other areas, and you'll find one dick after another.
3RR is a daily magical giant dickfest.

How does one judge them all, except by recent well-known atrocities? That's how the DICK
award was always done in the past, and it's obviously the only possible way. Otherwise
you'll be handing out Special Achievement awards by the armload.

Most group members here seem to have little or no experience on Commons, and so may find it hard to believe that many Commons administrators are worse than WP. Incredible, but I think that is true. Certainly, the behavior of many Commons administrators during the controversy over their abundant porn files was particularly deplorable and deserves recognition.

Pains me to admit it but I agree with Kwork about some of the admins (and "freedom" trumps everything regular users)... It's like they don't get why posting a pic of a possible minor that likely didn't consent is so ... unreasonable. I despair. I'm frankly concerned that our good friend NewYorkBrad (T-C-L-K-R-D) is not represented in any of the nominations. Straight shooter -- not so much. Cohones, no, that's not it either. What award category combines the illusion of good intentions, mixes it with tl;dr commentary, a lifer attitude to the Wik, and boils it all down into a complete lack of followthrough or (indeed) any meaningful accomplishment? Impotent Rage For the Machine? No, that's not it. Words fail me.

On a similar note, if my suggestion for the Forgotten but not Gone category had been taken up, I might nominate Alison (T-C-L-K-R-D) , who continues to enforce absurd Wiki-policy, then hangs out and kvetches about it.

No sense leaving the WR members out, lest we are accused of favoritism!

If you get away with this, then flush the http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Aboriginal, as well as the http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Steve_Hodder-Watt written to punish the Australian citizen who complained to the Australian authorities. Then resign your sysop and checkuser status at ED, flush your user page, and never go back.

You've come down on me for doxing an underage Wikipediot, but here ED is enticing EDiots to first commit one felony (DDoS with LOIC), and then commit a second felony (lying to the FBI). You are not being very protective of children by participating in ED. Even Martha Stewart knows better than to lie to the FBI (she did time for this). This is the worst possible advice ED could give the basement-dwellers who read ED.

ED's defense is that this "free speech" is protected because it's all satire. Such a defense might be reasonable if the readership is educated enough to recognize it as satire. In the case of ED, however, satire passes over into outright hate speech, simply because ED readers are uneducated, inexperienced in the real world, and irresponsible.

ED is an attractive nuisance for children and other stupid people, and has no right to exist.

But back to the subject at hand, the problem is that Brad isn't generally a dick. He's just a tedious old fart hanging around for no apparent reason. He has a position of power which he uses to absolutely no effect whatsoever. He affects a patina of reasonableness (and for all I know, is actually reasonable), but accomplishes nothing. Brad on WP:BIO - zilch. Brad on Wikiporn - nada. Brad on "User:Malcolm Schosha" - zip. While someone on Wikipedia not using power for evil is a novelty, it isn't a very interesting one.

Brad's less like Al Pacino and more like Alan Hale, Sr. (T-H-L-K-D). The guy was in 235 movies and if anyone remembers him at all (not likely), it's because he was the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Hale,_Jr Dad. He's Inspector Clouseau (T-H-L-K-D), only not funny. Perhaps it's an occupational hazard for attorneys. Frank Bednarz (Cool Hand Luke (T-C-L-K-R-D) ) ought to be careful: JD + WP = Tedious impotence. There's no pill for that.

Now, I take umbrage there. Alan Hale Sr. was one of the best scene stealers in movie history -- his Little John in "The Adventures of Robin Hood" was classic! Real movie lovers revere Hale Sr. -- Hale Jr. was no great shakes as an actor, however.

Bzzt. Except I can think of of one memorable Hale, Sr. role without google or WP: he was Little John in the "original" (and still the best) 1939 Errol Flynn Robin Hood. In which he was perfect and basically defined that character forever (what there is of him), rather like Bela Lugosi and Dracula. Except whenever I see that film I have the uncanny feeling that any moment he's going to do the roll-eyes-open/close-mouth-open/close-hands thing of the skipper trying to keep himself from strangling Gilligan.

The old films where you see people in early incarnations are fun. There's a palomino horse in one scene in Robin Hood that looks very much like Roy Rogers' Trigger. And by golly, it is Trigger! And look! Scarlett O'Hara is being courted by a young Clark Kent with no glasses!

As for NYB, agree. On a scale of 10, his blandness goes to 12. Sorry, Lar.
