In my day the third line was "Paid a penny" which was in reference to the days of public conveniences* where one old penny was required to enter the stalls, one penny being a large amount of money.

*A minor British scandal is the loss of these useful facilities, usually blamed on the cottaging industry rather on the rather more dull budget cuts.

No, the third line is "Paid my dime"; "Paid a penny" is a poor localization that doesn't preserve the meter.
