If anyone was still wondering "why India" for the WMF to be focusing more attention, you need look no further than here: QUOTE India has moved up the rank of donors to the Wikimedia Foundation to become the sixth largest donor in 2010-11 after donors from the US, Canada, Japan, Spain and the UK.
Nearly 11,000 Indians donated $ 193,657 to the foundation, which raised a total of $ 14.81 mn through donations from across the world.

QUOTE(thekohser @ Fri 18th March 2011, 10:00am) If anyone was still wondering "why India" for the WMF to be focusing more attention, you need look no further than here: QUOTE India has moved up the rank of donors to the Wikimedia Foundation to become the sixth largest donor in 2010-11 after donors from the US, Canada, Japan, Spain and the UK.
Nearly 11,000 Indians donated $ 193,657 to the foundation, which raised a total of $ 14.81 mn through donations from across the world. Is that a joke? India, which actually has a larger middle class than the U.S. (in terms of absolute numbers) was outdonated by Canada (10% of the size of the US) and by SPAIN. That's how much India cares. The mindset of India is more socialist than any country on that list-- a mindset that says that the internet, like pharmaceuticals, should be more like state utility. I'm amazed they even made it to sixth. The WMF is interested in India because they want to outsource everything but Sue's private SF residence to there. Sue can run the thing by teleconference-- it's not like she pokes her head into the server rooms near her home anyway. Boy, is Sue going to be unhappy when the board votes her job to Bishakha Datta, who will quit the board to take it. Ms. Datta is, after all, a bigger feminist, and more in touch with India's culture. And has a headstart in knowledge of prostitution, too. As for Jimbo, having WP's main office in India will hardly affect him. He can give a speech about WP from any base. And as for Wikia in SF, Jimbo stays in Florida and London. I'll bet they don't let him near Wikia, even though he owns some of it. His shares have long been diluted by outside investors to the point that they probably ignore him at Wikia even more than they do at WMF. If he gets paid, it's only because owners get dividends.
