_ Admin retirements _ Chase me has gone?

Posted by: Peter Damian

A couple of notes on the talk page of the Jimbo. See below. The first is from Sven Manguard, who by all accounts is a pretty difficult character himself. Is it true about ChaseMe? He has not contributed since February, and recent Arbcom cases have him as retired.

It's pretty funny that the person in charge of 'editor retention' has left.

Hpvpp is a qualified linguist who I know off-wiki. He seems to have been put off by the admin culture. Surely not?

Plans for Editor Retention and Community Building
Panyd, who was the de facto leader of WP:CONTRIB, was one of the few users actively working on editor retention and community building, and was doing so with a WMF budget. Now that she is gone, and Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry and Mono have also left Wikipedia, WP:CONTRIB is dying.

Quite frankly, Wikipedia as a community is tremendously socially disfuntional. We treat each other poorly, and really are not even surprised anymore that such treatment leads to a high level of attrition among the core 10,000 or so most active and committed editors. I do believe that if something isn't done, Wikipedia won't see 20, or if it does, it'll be a shell of what it is today.

Is the foundation doing anything to try to improve the community? I saw questions related to that on the recent questionnaire, but as far as I know there really isn't any movement on the issue foundation side, and as for the user side, there are more people making the situation worse than are making it better, by a large margin.

Why I resign as editor
The reason I resign as editor is that I am unable to cope with the “admin culture” in Wikipedia. Note that I am not saying that there is a conspiracy. Certainly, there are groups of editors who gang up on individual editors, but such behavior does not constitute a conspiracy, let alone an “admin conspiracy”. I repeat, there is no conspiracy.

The “admin culture” pervades all levels of Wikipedia and is essentially an attitude of maintaining ‘law and order’ without regard to the human person of the editor. It shows itself in being ‘politically correct’, both positively and negatively. It also shows as being pedantic and giving more adherence to the letter than to the spirit of the ‘rules’. To be sure, those who concern themselves with those ‘rules’ have precious little time and there are those who are difficult to handle, but that should never go to the detriment of the individual editor.

Note that comparable complaints have been made at the March 2011 Update talk-page.

I do like Wikipedia, I do not like the “admin culture” in the Wikipedia. Being here has been quite stressful at times and I find my health more important than improving Wikipedia. Consequently, I resign as editor. I will not check my talk-page. Anybody wishing to say something to me can email.

Oy, come on, leave the poor guy alone. If he ever comes back maybe then you can start picking on him again.

Seems the Good speechify young....

You gotta croak in front of an audience, or else it doesn't count.

Hmmn, I don't know about stone but concrete submarines were perfectly feasible ... there was once a plan to build large scale merchant submarine vessels to sail under the icecaps thereby shortening freight time. I suppose global warming put an end to that.

The guy probably got a job and re-discovered that going to work, eating, sleeping and shagging the missus took up time enough and was far more enjoyable. Good on him.

Well, Chase me probably got a life. Either that, or he's taking care of poor Paynd, who I thought is retired due to health issues?

By all accounts, Mono was annoying, moody, strong-willed, and somewhat immature/MySpacey. I doubt he's being missed much.

Sven Manguard has a track record of getting the facts wrong, also being way too strong-willed, thinking he's right and no one else is, and doing everything as fast as possible. I'd ignore his mini-tirade; it's not like he hasn't quit more than once. The fact that he goes crying off to Jimbo about this editor retention nonsense shows just how much he expects something to be done about it.

Hpvpp is silly. There's as much "admin culture" on Wikipedia as there is "politician pressure" in government. Some will be authority-craving twats and others will be nice and try to do something before they get shoved out. Culture? No. Just very noticeable dumbasses.
