However, they are not hidden from automobile engines, including the newer, more "environmentally-friendly" electric and hybrid engines. Also, please note that this subforum is meant to be used for discussion of the actual biographical articles themselves; more generalized discussions of BLP policy should be posted in the General Discussion or Bureaucracy forums.

Anyone been following Encyclopedia Dramatica? It seems they've changed formats. I'm kind of surprised to not see a thread about it here already, though it's certainly possible I just missed it. Or maybe this place is just kinda dead at the moment.

Any news, Alison? I thought they were just down temporarily and set up a new site like that one Internet meme thing for kids.

Hey guys! If you think that ohinternet.com is a "new format" of ED, I've got some nice swampland you really need to buy....

It's not a reformatted ED. Oh Internet was constructed from scratch.

Why did Ed close? Was there some lawsuit we don't know about? Seems strange it just vanished like that.

My sources tell me that the redirect is a temporary measure, and that ohinternet.com is simply a "holding domain" to be used while authorities search for Sherrod DeGrippo's stolen wig collection.

Apparently Ms. DeGrippo had an astonishingly large collection of wigs. Why she would want to steal so many is still a bit of a mystery, but we all have our little foibles and eccentricities, I suppose.

Queen Sherrod did not like ED. Neither did any rational observer with a social conscience. Good riddance.

Wait a minute, are you saying none of those stolen wigs will ever be returned to their rightful owners?

Think of all the endangered mountain gorillas out there who now have no pubic hair, and for what? It all seems so tragically pointless.

Is THAT who she blames? Ha ha ha.

Mebbe I should sell HER the swampland.

Mr. Brandt, did you finally get thru to them, and that's why ED is "gone for good"?
If so, a) good fer you and have a drink, and b) where am I gonna go to look up
crazy people from Livejournal and Deviant Art? That was practically the only legitimate
use ED had--it listed some of the worst net-trolls. In a maybe-not-deserved
shit-on-their-heads format, granted.
But at least there was something. How else can you find out that wackos like
Snapesnogger and Jessica Elwood aren't who they say they are?

But isn't this always how these things end up? I mean, you put together a perfectly good shock site, dedicated to racism, bigotry, sexism, homophobia, and advocacy of a wide variety of sexual perversions, only to have it ruined by 12-year-old btard fgz. I mean, what's the point of even trying anymore? (IMG:smilys0b23ax56/default/confused.gif)

I would say that josephevers.blogspot.com hastened the inevitable.

I helped with the research and the photos, and logged IRC for 8 months, but I don't have the password to the site. The owner of that blog is someone you all don't know from WR. I don't even know what country he/she lives in. He/she is that lovable all-Tor-all-the-time researcher on WR. A damn good researcher. Hats off to him/her.

This new "ohinternet" is down for me...

One or two btards (see /b/ subheading in this article) were DDoSing ohinternet.com with their Low Orbit Internet Cannon. This resulted in massive packet losses on the last hop, and your connection timed out. But it's past their bedtime now, and everything seems okay.

The btard reaction to the ohinternet.com "sell-out" surprises me. They're throwing tantrums, thereby confirming Sherrod's low opinion of them.

But the larger issue is that ED should have purged these losers in 2006. ED waited too long, and now there are a lot of them, and they are all mad as hell at Sherrod. Most of ED's high traffic was fueled by the btard affinity for vulgarity and kinkiness. It will be difficult for ohinternet.com to succeed without that sort of magnetism, it seems to me.

Nothing succeeds on the net like douchebaggery. Even more popular than porn, I suspect.

Do you know how many 4chan-type imageboards there are now? Hundreds, easily.
Most of them started by, and dominated by, the kind of 14-year-old bigots that helped
make /b/ world-famous. ED used to have a good list of _chans, but that's gone now.
This is pathetic by comparison.

For the record, the new site is still using MediaWiki: <http://ohinternet.com/Special:Version>. I'm not quite sure why I thought otherwise; must've been the skin change or something.

The new site seems to be pretty terrible. If you want to legitimately cover Internet-related topics, you use Wikipedia. The niche that ED filled was to cover Internet culture in a more amusing and chaotic way. I can't see this new site going anywhere.

CC-BY-SA
. Ah I see they didn't use the CC licenses. If the server is in the US send a DMCA notice, or file a complaint with the domain registrar.

Due to the Anonymous myth they buy into, these people don't believe in accountability or responsibility. They don't believe that their actions could have consequences. The only way to make them respect ED's copyrights would be to break the myth with a sharp slap in the face and to make them realize that they could be held accountable.

If you want to legitimately cover Internet-related topics, you use Wikipedia. The niche that ED filled was to cover Internet culture in a more amusing and chaotic way. I can't see this new site going anywhere.

It seems to cover many topics that WP wouldn't consider notable enough, or would have people screaming "BLP!".

What gives these people the right to usurp the Encyclopedia Dramatica name and steal over six hard years of other authors' work?

Evidently, ED filled a real need. A need for shitheads to abuse each other, and everyone else.

The new one is kinda pathetic, like an homage assembled by bored teenagers (which it probably was).
The server keeps crashing out too.

Oh, btw.....here's Gawker's take on all this ED crap.

Believe it or not, the Web Ecology Project is attempting to preserve the old ED.......

For a look at the anger of the trolls who made ED what it was, try the Reddit 4chan section.

I asked Queen Sherrod to delete my bio on ED, after being informed by an ED insider that she was the final arbiter of all disputed content on ED. I was informed by this insider that the Queen got my email, didn't recognize my name, and then informed this insider that she (the Queen) had decided not to reply to me.

I lobbied further with the help of this insider to get my bio deleted. But this sympathetic insider felt that he/she did not have the power to do this unilaterally, even though he/she was an administrator on ED.

When Sheneequa was doxed a few weeks later (thanks to efforts by my research partner who later started josephevers.blogspot.com), this ED insider (a different person from my research partner) suddenly obtained permission to delete my bio. But by then my thinking was that there are a lot of real-life names on ED, and to put it simply, the entire site did not deserve to exist. Anyone who asked for deletion of their name from ED was treated with the utmost contempt, conveniently disguised as "lulz."

Already there are a lot of real-life names showing up on OhInternet.com. Queen Sherrod should be a lot more cautious about this; she needs to establish a policy.

Dear Ms. DeGrippo:

Do you have an email address for Long Dong Silver? Or if you prefer,
can you forward this email to him?

Earlier this month, he wrote this:
http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/cz9q...sop_ama/c0wfrm3

"As a note to any other people with a similar issue. When requesting a
removal or edit to a page, a nicely worded email will often suffice.
Cursing, ranting, and frivolous legal threats result in it being
featured on the front page as the Article Of The Now."

I wish to request the removal of the article about me on ED:
http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Daniel_Brandt

It shows up as number 1 in both Google and Yahoo in a search for
"daniel brandt" without the quotation marks. Bing.com apparently has
the good taste to not index this page at all.

I am president of a tax-exempt public charity, and our board of directors
feels that this article has a negative impact on our ability to obtain
foundation funding to support our projects. They have asked me to request
that it be deleted.

Thank you,
Daniel Brandt

I've actually switched to using Bing as opposed to google in part for this reason. It's sort of like quitting smoking, you can't quite get away from it (esp. with gbooks) but it is sort of funny when the evil corporation Microsoft turns out to be actually less evil, at least along one dimension, than the corporation that is running around in the "I am not evil" t-shirt. The kids, so ironic these days.

The top search result for Daniel Brandt on Bing is www.danielbrandt.com. An out-of-date, barely maintained site about some (german I think) DJ or other...
The top search result on google is www.wikipedia-watch.org. That site isn't even on the first page in Bing. Or the second. Though the 2nd page has two uncyclopedia entries for Daniel Brandt.

Bing not being evil would be nice. If they only had a search algorithm that was even somewhat competent, it might even be useful.

The expected fact that people turn out to be the very thing they strenuously and unexpectedly deny, is so hackneyed that it almost doesn't qualify as irony. "The louder he talked of his honor, the faster we counted our spoons," says Emerson.

Yes. You can see and judge for yourself. The sysops and I first learned about the plan on January 24, but I wasn't invited to join the ohinternet.com wiki until February 8. It wasn't an easy decision to make. I made a few articles, but I didn't have the same enthusiasm for the new wiki as I did with the old one. I felt more at home at ED. I didn't see the point of begging Sherrod to keep a wiki that was clearly draining her spirits, so I never tried and spent most of my time making the users at ED comfortable. My only regret is not being permitted to tell the other users, but I didn't want to break the trust Sherrod and the other sysops placed in me.

The /b/tards can't seem to comprehend what the word copyright means. ED had a far stronger copyright policy than the weak CC by SA thing that Wikipedia has and this .ch fork would have to, at the very least, give attribution to ED for their copied information.

But they haven't and can't seem to understand why they have to.

I'm so hoping that Sherrod will get their service provider to shut them down.

The .ch version looks like a lot more fun, though. I did contribute here and there to the old ED, but I may sign up for the other one now. I mean, c'mon... Juggalo, the oh internet intro;

QUOTE
A 'juggalo' is an individual with an unhealthy obsession with the musical workings of rap group Insane Clown Posse. Juggalos are known for wearing clan make-up in public, bumming around trailer parks, showing devotion to the 'family', going to juggalo gatherings, and having children out of wedlock. Juggalos may be found online on Youtube, Myspace, and occasionally in Furry communities.

vs. ED Classic;

QUOTE
A Juggalo is a member of the Insane Clown Posse's cult of personality(Its a well known fact that all Juggalos are Lolcows). They are easy to spot, as they proudly wear their clown makeup in public, dress in dark clothing and behave without any class or dignity. They are not to be confused with goths, as goths have better taste in music. Typically hailing from trailer parks, these individuals are often fat, ugly, toothless, use an amount of profanity in conversation that even EDiots would find excessive, have no taste, smoke meth, so helplessly retarded if they killed themselves their Parents would be proud, and opt out of their educations in the 8th grade. Strangely enough, despite claiming to enjoy ICP for their musical merits (Insinuating they enjoy rap in general), you will never hear them listening to any music groups outside of the Psychopathic Records label. They are utterly oblivious and often hostile to the reality that the band and it's "music" is a parody, much like the more popular and successful joke of a white rapper, Eminem.

tl;dr: Take the worst of rap, the worst of rock, white trash, wiggerhood, MTV, mix generously with steaming shit, then throw clown face paint on top of the whole mess, and you get a Juggalo.

I'll choose lulz over milquetoast, thanks.

I don't have a problem with the lulz themselves, I approve of lulz where appropriate. However, they shouldn't have broken copyright. Is .ch so dependent on the original ED that it can't come up with new content on its own? Are the /b/tards that unoriginal?

After reading this interview with Sven Slootweg, who registered the encyclopediadramatica.ch domain name, I have a depressing feeling in the pit of my stomach that they will just laugh at DMCA notices. Sven is a high-level Anonymous dude.

This is the second service provider ed.ch has had in less than a week. It's quite possible that they're ready and able to shift their entire site to a new provider in a few hours. That would force Sherrod to play whack-a-mole with DMCA notices, which leaves her essentially powerless.

This is unfortunate. The Aboriginal article is back, the Nigger article is back, and the new article on Sherrod is so bad that it made me feel sad for her — something I would have said was impossible just one week ago.

The only good news is that it should take a long time for ed.ch to get their rankings up, especially if they keep switching service providers. And maybe — this is a long shot — Google will rank ed.ch down in the mud where it belongs.

Wow, Anonymous sure has fallen from the days when it actually meant something. It had a purpose, a goal, and actually worked to better the world. Now it has disintegrated into useless people like Sven.

Clearly then, if DMCA notices are useless, what needs to be done is a lawsuit. I'm sure the US government would love to get Mr. Slootweg in trouble.

According to the *.ch domain registry terms of service, it might be possible to make a case for revocation of the encyclopediadramatica.ch domain name. For example, look at number 7 below. I suspect the Australian government would, if pressed, send the registry a letter requesting revocation of the domain name due to the Aboriginal article, which the Australian Civil Rights Commission claims is a criminal violation under Australian law. Other countries might also have objections to various articles if they have "hate speech" laws.

QUOTE

3.3.2

Deletion by revocation

SWITCH revokes the registration of a domain name if SWITCH is presented with a decision of a court or of a court of arbitration enforceable in Switzerland, or a decision by a Swiss criminal prosecution, administrative or regulatory authority enforceable in Switzerland, an expert decision of the dispute resolution service for ".ch" and ".li" domain names, or if a settlement concluded in or out of court by both parties is presented, according to which SWITCH is directly instructed to revoke the domain name, without SWITCH being a party to the corresponding proceedings, or which contains the required holder's consent to revocation or by which that consent is replaced. The third party must submit a certificate of the enforceability of the decision.

SWITCH can revoke the registration of domain names if:

1. the holder breaches the applicable law;

2. the holder breaches these GTC or the contractual relationship with SWITCH and does not eliminate the breach within a period set by SWITCH;

3. the fees are not paid in accordance with the contract;

4. the holder breaches the duty to maintain data;

5. there is an evident risk that SWITCH could make itself legally liable due to the registration and/or use of the domain name. In that case the revocation takes place in consultation with OFCOM or the Office of Communications respectively;

6. the holder has died or has been deleted from the register of commerce as a result of bankruptcy or liquidation;

7. other important reasons such as international recommendations, standards or harmonisation require it. In that case the revocation takes place in consultation with OFCOM or the Office of Communications respectively.

With revocation, the domain name is deleted from the Whois service, the database and the zonefile. With the deletion, the domain name becomes available for re-registration after a transition period as defined in para. 3.3.3.

If the revocation took place on the basis of para. 1 above, the domain name is made available for re-registration at the time designated in the decision or in the settlement between the parties or, if such a time is not specified, as quickly as possible.

Very astute of you. For example, I know that Awbrey often poses as Justin Beiber to 13 year-old girls on Facebook, then threatens to post their private info on the net when he has it, unless they write in their Facebook accounts "I like ****** **** up my ***."

Yes, he does it all in ancient Greek, for sure, but that doesn't change the essential nature of it. It's just slightly more challenging for the reader to follow (not to mention the girls). It makes WR a more highbrow site, but actually we're still just as evil. You know we are.

My real-life nickname is also that is also that of a famous musician, and I used to use this name as my handle on various Unix machines back in the early/mid 90's. Somehow my accounts were visible to the outside world and I was flooded...and I mean flooded...with e-mails from 15 year-old girls professing their undying love, providing their home addresses and phone numbers, thinking they they were privileged enough to have found the secret e-mail address of Mr. Celebrity. Being an immature 19 yr old at the time, I called a few of them to fuck around. Some I pretended to be Mr. Celebrity and messed with them a bit, but that got tiring quickly so I then berated them for being gullible. If their parents answered, I told them to keep a better eye on their retarded kids.

So, would my grizzled, 40-ish self pull this fake Bieber shtick? No. But I find I have little sympathy for the gullibility/stupidity of teens who think a famous person is actually taking a personal interest in them. I've been there, and teaching gullible people a lesson isn't always a bad thing, as harsh as the tactics may be.

Apart from the Bieber Fever junk though, overall ED was simply a very amusing website that was quite handy to link to from time to time. Whether it is mbz's fanboys trying to get into her panties or the general whining of the "omg don't delete my article, it has a million google hits!" brigade, something has been lost. "Oh Internet" is the kind of site my grandmother would find funny. I mean, Broccoli dog? Seriously?

Wow, Anonymous sure has fallen from the days when it actually meant something. It had a purpose, a goal, and actually worked to better the world. Now it has disintegrated into useless people like Sven.

And let's not forget SchuminWeb, that paragon of Wikipedia administrators and Anonymous members. (IMG:smilys0b23ax56/default/yecch.gif)
