However, they are not hidden from automobile engines, including the newer, more "environmentally-friendly" electric and hybrid engines. Also, please note that this subforum is meant to be used for discussion of the actual biographical articles themselves; more generalized discussions of BLP policy should be posted in the General Discussion or Bureaucracy forums.

Maru is a good example of an "internet celebrity" BLP - these are people whose fame or notoriety is based primarily, if not entirely, on things like how many people have viewed their Youtube video(s) or the fact that they started a website that was popular for some length of time. (And as might be expected with Wikipedia, a disproportionate number of the latter group are "free culture" types, people who were involved with things like the filesharing movement, FOSS alternatives to expensive commercial software packages, and social networking, among other activities.) It's probably impossible for Wikipedians to ever be truly objective about the actual degree to which these people are "notable," especially under their already alarmingly low standards. Luckily for them, that's only a problem if the article subjects want their privacy back or are being actively defamed by one or more established WP'ers - but in general I'd have to guess that the percentage of these subjects who are perfectly happy to be written about in this way is actually even higher than the overall percentage (which I'd guess is somewhere between 80 and 90 percent). Anyhoo, I don't mean to single anyone out in particular, but folks like Gustavo Guerra (T-H-L-K-D), Andrej Preston (T-H-L-K-D), Lim Jeong-hyun (T-H-L-K-D) (aka "Funtwo") would never make it into a non-internet-based general reference encyclopedia, under almost any circumstances. Then again, someday the internet might surpass movies, books, television, sports, and politics as the most prominent pathway to fame, not just the easiest or cheapest like it is now. Who knows?

Yeah, those are quite lame. Still, I think that giving a YouTube cat an article is just a bit lamer. Look thru this list for more stupidity. Quite a few bits of stupid in there, along with the historically-famous fuzzy critters (who might actually deserve a mention in an encyclopedia). This post has been edited by EricBarbour:

I'd say that part of the problem is that the threshold for coverage in reliable sources has dropped dramatically... the idea of "once notable, always notable" makes good sense, but doesn't mesh as well in the age of publish it-ignore it. Sadly, if the sources think that cats or desperate housewives are worthy of continued attention, it's not surprising "we're the sum of all information" folks think so too (I finally got fed up with The Washington Post's corruption, and the fact that the Salahis are *still* making the front page.)

I believe we have mentioned http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Mouser_..._Cabinet_Office . Which I think is cute, but not necessarily "encyclopedic" (whatever that means). One of the problems with having so loose a definition of "encyclopedic" (by which I mean there isn't one!) is that it can be used on your enemies as just one more mask of WP:ILIKEIT or WP:IDONTLIKEIT. For example, we lost "The New York Times and the Holocaust" as being not encyclopedic because no self-respecting encyclopedia would EVER have an article called that. But we kept "IBM and the Holocaust" because it's essentially a long book report. (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/wacko.gif) About a book of the same name. But (we must admit) ALSO certainly nothing you'd find in a respectable encyclopedia (which doesn't do book reports). Why? ILIKEIT vs. IDONTLIKEIT, basically. The people with the most wiki-juice won, as usual. (IMG: smilys0b23ax56/default/ermm.gif)

QUOTE(EricBarbour @ Wed 16th June 2010, 1:53am) A real "encyclopedia" would list him by his legal full name, Sir Graham Eric Stirrup.
You'd at least need a cross-reference for the benefit of people not aware of his full name. QUOTE(Herschelkrustofsky @ Wed 16th June 2010, 2:40am) Actually, I think he prefers to be called "Sir Jock Stirrup." It sounds kind of dashing, doesn't it?
He is listed in the Air Force List as "Sir Jock Stirrup". That's his official name as far as the RAF is concerned, so that's the one I'd have used had I started the article.

I think I win with this one ... Gordon Jennison Noice by author Gnoice (T-C-L-K-R-D)
of course. Would that be Gordon Jennison Noice, Gordon Jennison Noice ; Gordon Noice, J. Gordon Noice, Gordon Jennison or Gordon J. Noice? Yup, its Gordon Jennison Noice, born on November 14, 1961 in Winter Park, Florida; an American, Lifemax Network Marketing, actor, director, writer and a Platinum Director and Independent Distributor at Lifemax. Lifemax is, of course, some scammy MLM type company that encourages one to try and selling a supplement healthfood to all one's friends and family in order to GT R1CH KWEEK. Did I mention Lifemax to you? Lifemax Gnoice (T-C-L-K-R-D)
only other edits of note are adding his own birthday to the list of historical events happening on November 14 ( you know ... alongside inconsequential stuff such the launch of Apollo 12, the destruction of the Coventry Cathedral by the German Luftwaffe bombers, and the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors at the Inca's doorstep) and to Bob Arnot .... Lifemax Chief Wellness Educator at Lifemax. Did I ever tell you how good Lifemax is for you and how it can MKE U R1CH KWEEK? Wonderful, another scam artists instantly clawing his way up the Google page ranker courtesy of Jimbo Wales's Staff of Life. Did I ever tell you how good I feel since I started taking Lifemax and how good you can feel too? Basically, if you take this stuff you instantly get two chicks and a yacht just like that picture of Jimmy Wales is his soft porn days (... before he moved into hard core porn on the Pee-dia). Yes, its Gordon ' Lifemax' Noice. One of the things that always fucks me off about these MLM scams is that although the food etc may well actually be a reasonably nourishing thing to eat they always sell them with ridiculously like ... "8 times more calcium than milk". Yah, fine ... let me see you eat a pint of dry seeds a day then. One of the greatest cause for such derision, is that ... QUOTE '''Gordon Jennison Noice''' aka Kahuna Bob; the wannabe hawaiian with a sulu & puka shell necklace, Flor-idiot, a wannabe something and c-rated extra wannabe actor who tries really really hard to be noticed. (to quote our dear friend 75.85.136.119) ... could not even get his Lifemax spam URL correct. But, remember folks, this is the future that Uncle Jimbo dreamed of where every one in the world gets to have their own biography on the Wikipedia! Hey ... what is wrong with that idea!?! Since 2006 ... Lifemax ... it makes us rich but still does not improve intelligence or integrity. Perfect food for Wikipedians. This post has been edited by Cock-up-over-conspiracy:

That's very odd. We were never taught about this hometown hero at Winter Park High School! Surely he had reached notability by 1986, hadn't he?
