I have been looking through the archives of 2001, with the aim of perhaps writing a book on Wikipedia. Lots of interesting things, including the fact that Jimmy definitely wanted advertising at one point.

And then later he didn't. My take is that he believed Wikia would be the big golden goose laying big fat eggs. Or was it the community reaction? Or what?

There was a very long and shouty thread here with Sanger and Anthony arguing with each other. If anyone remembers where it is, do let me know.

(PS: also ran across this thread today. Yep, Kato was right, back in early 2009--Wikipedia was and still is in decline.)
