Translation word for word. Elg -> Elk, Hund -> Hound
It seems redundant, though.

This is for the benefit of those who know not what is an elk or a hound. Such do not think that elkhound is a translation!

Elg = moose. They hunt moose with these dogs in Norway.
Elk in English is a big deer-like animal that is not the same thing Norwegians think of when they say "Elg".
A direct translation would be moosehound.

Correct! Now we know this to be correct, and anyone reading the free encyclopedia will still believe that Elk in English is a big deer-like animal that is the same thing Norwegians think of when they say "Elg". Shame on them for believing what Wikipedia says.

I do not understand this. My dictionary says that a moose is an elk.
