_ General Discussion _ Wow - 1st time hit by a range block

Posted by: Brutus

While holidaying in Surabaya Indonesia I decided to edit a article, logged in under my very clean user name, and surprise surprise, a range block!!
IP 36.74.128.0/17 by JamesBWatson. being no longer IT savvy for things like IP addresses, how wide is this range block? I think the ISP they use here uses dynamic IP addresses.
I would have though a legit editor user (me) after logging in would have over ridden a range block but no!
I also curious as to why as there is also no one here at the house I'm staying in who has even heard of English Wikipedia.
Guess the edit will have to wait till I leave the third world.

Must be a real fuckwit admin. That's 36.74.128.0 - 36.74.255.255 or 32,768 addresses, probably an entire ISP. The number halves each time the /nn bit increases by 1.

No, you can only edit through a rangeblock if the admin has enough sense to allow it (ruddy few do) or you have some funny special power.

No idea why they're lucky enough not to have heard of it.

"No idea why they're lucky enough not to have heard of it." Probably because English is not their first language in Indonesia.

The whole episode reminds me how someone on Wikipedia blocked an entire township in the USA some years ago.
I'm not a rangeblock or IP address expert, but it looks like Wikipedia has blocked a fair proportion of the city of Surabaya, Indonesia - 2nd largest city in Indonesia with a population 3 million people.

Has this wide ranging block be raised on Wikipedia talk pages? The Admin in question surely must have his block rights reviewed.

Note: Block has now been removed.

Amazing - someone has some bloody sense after all!

The "funny special power" is called IPblockexempt.
