I'm an American. My first thought when I hear "Royal Navy" is either some 18th century captain (Horatio Hornblower or that guy that the guy from Gladiator played)

As was Captain Kirk (he's a sort of combo of Hornblower and Cook, with a touches of Wyatt Earp). I further have a hunch that Trek's Zefram Cochrane (1967 original creation of WW II marine veteran Gene Coon) ALSO got his last name from the famous navy guy. However, I have no proof. There are, of course, naval references peppered all over Star Trek, sometimes even where they don't belong (I still giggle every time Kirk tells his helm officer "steady as she goes" ).
