Wow that sounds big.

Not as big as my -- oh, forget it.

So either the Chinese are not as smart as I'd thought, or the media is much lazier than I'd thought. They're getting the same level of coverage now for "unblocking" the Chinese-language Wikipedia as they got for unblocking the English one, which was considerable. Even though this should be a much smaller story, as far as the Western press is concerned.

I'm not sure they even understand the difference, to be honest! mad.gif

BEIJING -- China has unblocked access to the Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia after a ban of more than a year, in a move Chinese Web surfers and free speech advocates welcomed Friday. But some watchers of China's extensive censorship regime had doubts the site would not be banned again.

Online enyclopedia Wikipedia was accessible again in China on Thursday after being bloked for more than a year, a move hailed by free media advocacy group Reporters Without Borders. The main page of the Chinese-language version of Wikipedia (zh.wikipedia.org) could be displayed and searches for apolitical terms turned up results, but searches for subjects taboo to China's Communist leadership,

WHILE MANY are hailing Wikipedia's reintroduction into China as a victory of the web over Internet censors, they clearly have not noticed that the online encyclopaedia has deleted an important date in history.
