A recently minted admin with a user page history wiped on July 2 2010, User:TFOWR (T-C-L-K-R-D) doing 17 hour shifts on the Wikpedia ... are we to suspect no job, no girlfriend, ADHD, caffeine or crystal meth? Previously known as This Flag Once Was Red. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11,12 July all look basically the same.

Now, people might think I am joking when I suggest that officially registered charities have a responsibility to their volunteer staff ... a Duty of Care to ensure they are not exploited or endangered ... but working 17 hours a day on a PC is WAY beyond any normal Health & Safety limitation.

Although he still has someway to go before he breaks the 30 odd hour records of other marathopedian ... does anyone know who and where is so we can call his mother and see if he is OK.

Now, supposing ... generously ... that he stops to shit, shower, scrub his teeth and pack some toast before returning to his shift of unpaid laboring those are then less than 7 hour sleep breaks.

Quick look only ... I have not looked into this one in detail.

And it's no different than people who spend every free hour playing World of Warcraft, or drawing, or writing, or creating a scale model of the Alamo. Obsessive habits come cheap, and I'd argue they're all unhealthy, although as to the relative worth of the endeavors, you can decide for yourself.

I agree that it's not different than World of Warcraft. Both are pathological. Drawing or writing, on the other hand, could be a healthy expression of real-world creativity (depending, of course, on what is being drawn or written.) The Alamo model, not so much.

Those who love to work there eventually do become surly.

I agree that it's not different than World of Warcraft. Both are pathological. Drawing or writing, on the other hand, could be a healthy expression of real-world creativity (depending, of course, on what is being drawn or written.) The Alamo model, not so much.

No, I dont think your joking but it's clear that someone surly loves to work in Jimbo's Wonderland.
Those who love to work there eventually do become surly.

TROWR is a certifiable psychotic wikipediot. The soul, dignity, the humanity suck out of this now lost nutball, by the Wikipedia lake of dogshit.

Were Plath or Van Gogh really all that healthy? Maybe Emily Dickinson should have got out more. Of course, their work has value to us, so we cut them a break and gild their neuroses, but B Fox has a point.

And if WP were a magnificent success, the devotion would seem less pathological.

People who play Warcraft obsessively aren't creating an "encyclopedia" full of errors, omissions, and teen-nerdy drivel about cartoons and video games.

And the guy who makes a model of the Alamo has a model of the Alamo when he's done. Plus he's learned something about the early history of Texas.

Wikipedia is like Geocities or Mirsky's Worst Of The Web. Completely fragile, perishable and ephemeral. It could disappear completely someday, and leave nothing but vague memories (and if you're lucky, a mirror provided by someone at no charge, which itself could disappear completely).

TFOWR is completely crazy. SlimVirgin crazy. No way in hell would I hire someone that manic, or even socialize with him--he'd drive me crazy too. Letting him edit Wikipedia invites trouble, someday, down the line.

Shall we start a countdown until he loses it and starts attacking people on-wiki for no apparent reason?

Oh, I hope not. TFOWR is one of the relatively few current Wikipedians that I like, and I would be unhappy to see him turn into the deranged obsessive of the Rodhullandemu and Juliancolton ilk.

Of course, that's my point. Unhealthy behaviors are, well, unhealthy. You might be getting a lot more bang for your unhealthful behavior by writing the next great novel before you drink to death, as opposed to posting tweets every ten seconds before you die of heart disease, but it's still compulsion. If you've got lots of free time I wouldn't recommend spending it on Wikipedia, but different strokes for different folks (yes, yes, Wikipedia is the Devil Incarnate. Jimmy Wales is that baby of Rosemary fame all growed up, blah blah.)

[b]A recently minted admin with a user page history wiped on July 2 2010, User:TFOWR (T-C-L-K-R-D) doing 17 hour shifts on the Wikpedia ... are we to suspect no job, no girlfriend, ADHD, caffeine or crystal meth?

Wouldn't crystal meth explain why he was up for 17 hours straight and mindlessly clicking at buttons?

I have more respect for someone who would obsessively draw or write than someone who would sit playing a video game like that all the time. Perhaps it is because so many of the computer people are so obese and disgusting, but it could be that the habit is pathetic too.

Right. The people playing games don't create anything at all. They are the ultimate consumers. They eat tons of junk food, drinks lots of mountain dew, and just become fat little Jabba the Hutts that consume, consume, and consume.

If that is some kind of defense to destructive behavior and/or its tolerance by Wikipedia it seems a very weak one.

But Wikipedia is a twof'er. You can play a video game in which you get to pretend you're writing something.

And that is day after day too ... seriously folks! 7 hours sleep and then back up.

• Would you do it if you were paid?
• COULD you do it even if you were being paid?
• What is the quality of thought or judgement likely to come of that? (Here we don't have to theorize, countless industrial and management studies have researched safety and efficiency issues).

If prisoners, cultists or Chinese sweatshop workers were being made to it by some evil master, there would be public uproar about it. Its Dickensian.

If we take the model making analogy, it is like making a model galleon out of matchsticks as someone else on the other side of the table is unmaking it whilst someone else sits there thinking they are building a spaceship. Both of which, the galleon and spaceship, having a XXX adult cinema onboard.

I have not looked at the day count but to keep that up one, surely has to have no life (no job, no relationships) ... so perhaps chronic self-esteem or addictive issues are involved here which the Pee-dia feeds without ANY thought to duty of care? One would also have to ask if they were a minor (summer vacation) or not.

Now, this is by no means an isolated case ... Peter Damian, perhaps you might refer to them in your letter to the funders.

And how do you know the manic teen admins of WP aren't guzzling junk food and Mountain Dew, and thus developing fat asses, while auto-reverting vandalism using scripts? Is there any real difference between using Huggle, and questing after the Lich King's loot, in the final result -- to end up looking like David Yellope or Brian Logan? biggrin.gif

And speaking of which; have you seen the recent photo of Erik Moeller at Wikimania? yecch.gif

Just like Wikipedia, I assume everyone is free to contribute as much or as little as their heart desires.

I agree with this. Just like any hobby, some get really obsessed with editing Wikipedia. Others get obsessed with discussing Wikipedia. To each his own.

Eh. While I can't say I appreciate being singled out in such a manner, It gives me more motivation on the latest diet. (8 pounds down and counting, just can't backslide).. Call it the online equivalent of those before sections of the Charles Atlas ads.
