_ Articles _ Donkey punch

Posted by: HRIP7

The Donkey punch wars have now spread from English Wikipedia to Wikiquote, Wiktionary, Spanish Wikipedia and God knows what Wikirubbish, with multiple new pages created to prevent the animation from being deleted in Commons.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:%22Donkey_punch%22_(animated).gif

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Donkey_punch

In Wiktionary, every grammatical form and spelling of the word donkey punch now features a copy of the animation as well ...

Commonists argue that the presence of this animation file created by User:Flyingfeck, on so many "educational" projects, means that it is clearly – you guessed it – educational.

On 11 February, Cirt (T-C-L-K-R-D) posted a note on the Commons http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:%22Donkey_punch%22_%28animated%29.gif for the childish "donkey punch" animation that had previously graced the WP article. They directed people to the http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Rick_santorum_caricature_satire_made_with_frothy_santorum_pic_1.jpg for "santorum" images that they had uploaded ("similar issues are being discussed").

Then Cirt created a Commons category "Donkey punch" and uploaded a number of images of "Artwork related to or inspired by the Donkey punch phenomenon". None of the images, save the animation, appear to depict the act itself. The category links to other wikiprojects such as the article on Wikiquote (which didn't exist until Cirt created it).

After the "santorum" images got deleted, Cirt appeared to see which way things were headed and went into full weasel mode.

QUOTE
Apology to the community
Recently I've come to realize that some uploads I'd added relating to the donkey punch phenomenon were not directly related and therefore not applicable to the topic or in scope. I'm glad the community voiced its opinion at related deletion discussions with regard to these images, and I've taken that feedback onboard and deleted them as self-requested by uploader (myself). I acknowledge the concerns of the community, and I thank you for the civil and polite way in which these concerns were brought to my attention by the majority of those that raised them.

Thank you for your time, -- Cirt (talk) 23:13, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Your deletion debate closeThank you for your well thought out deletion debate close of Commons:Deletion requests/File:Rick santorum caricature satire made with frothy santorum pic 1.jpg. I respect your decision regarding your evaluation of the input from the community. smile.gif Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 02:57, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

The dashingly handsome John Vandenberg deserves credit for mitigating some of the damage done by Cirt. The "donkey punch" animation no longer graces Simple or Wikiquote, and the santorum images are (mostly) gone.

Posted by: carbuncle

Looking at Wikitionary, not only did Cirt add the animation to "donkey punch", but they also created "donkeypunch", "donkey-punch", "donkeypunches", "donkey-punched", "donkeypunching", and "donkey punched".

So, what are the odds on some inclusionist nutter pointing out that there are WR readers following John around and supporting his deletion proposals? There must be some potential for amusement to come out of that.

Also, it's nice to be educated about this Cirt when I was not paying attention when his situation first blew up. Shrigley is really praising DC with faint damns when he compares his actions against AvH with his similar ones against Cirt.

I suspect that Jimbo just looked at the name of the page and assumed he was being told about the existence of the Wikipedia article or the video. He probably didn't check the thread here to see the evidence of Cirt trolling across multiple projects or the ED link. They don't call him Dumbo for nothing.

So, take it the next step. Ask Jimbo his opinion on the evidence that Cirt is trolling across multiple Wikimedia projects at the request of ED! You have to keep firing away with the guy, especially when the rug under which he sweeps the dirt is starting to bulge with lumps.

Doesn't work, in my experience. Once you are at the point where the lie or deception is absolutely obvious to everyone, requiring that every part of the lie is visible in a single place, laid out carefully and using syllogisms if necessary, leaving not even the slightest room for doubt or evasion, without any possibility of wriggling out of it – once you are there, I say, then Jimbo will simply delete it, or go into ‘radio silence’, or just ignore it and turn to something else. You will never catch him like that.

Someone oughta ask Sue Gardner if the presence... wait, the double presence (for some reason posting it once wasn't enough) of this image on Jimbo's talk page is part of Wikipedia's drive to attract more female editors.

Ok, that would be trolling, but there's a serious point in there - how can they talk all this stuff about attracting more female editors and at the same time tolerate and enable crap like this?

It is worthwhile noting the close of that deletion discussion:

QUOTE
Kept: On Commons, we concern ourselves with two main issues. Firstly, and most importantly, only freely-licenced materials can be hosted here. Secondly, and once the freely-licenced aspect is met, materials must be within our scope; in particular the provision of educational media.

Reviewing the history of the file, prior to this DR, I see that the file has seen use on both English Wikipedia (en:Donkey punch) since 21 October 2010[7], and Spanish Wikipedia (es:Donkey punch) since 16 February 2011[8]. Whether other WMF projects use this image is not decided at Commons, but on local projects. Commons should not be used as a tool to skirt local project discussions on usability of media on those projects.

Having said that, there are potential copyright issues with this file, which will not be resolved by way of this DR. There is another DR underway at present, which will determine whether the underlying work on this particular file is kept or deleted. If deleted, this image as a derivative of that work, will also be deleted. If kept, as I noted to an editor here, there are alleged Encyclopedia Dramatica IRC logs which indicate that the uploader is not the "copyright" owner of this image. (Quote: [2010-10-21 05:43:18] <ptime> I'll list it as my own work). As the uploader is not an established member of the community, the image has been marked with {{No permission}}, which is going to require OTRS processing. As mentioned to the editor, if any permission is received, it is going to be a stringent OTRS verification, given the source. russavia (talk) 19:35, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Russavia is quite clearly saying that this image will be deleted soon, because they know the conditions that they set cannot be met (astute observers will note that these conditions are completely bogus and not applied to other images on Commons). Since they think they have found a way to delete the image, they don't have to agree with people who want the images deleted, which would be a problem for Russavia since they probably think this is another WR plot. Doubleplusgood.

Sounds like content management of this charitable educational project is in safe hands, then.

Of course they do. They need to know when we will next campaign against valued editors convicted for distributing child pornographers and individuals who claim to parliament that they help BLP subjects sort out problems whilst in reality contributing to those problems themselves.

Or indeed, Jimbo's face image super-imposed on the woman... or would that be 'beyond the pale'?

It should be superimposed on both figures, actually.

However, finding a photo for the female figure for which Jimbo has the right facial expression might be tricky... He's always been good at avoiding the grimace-look when cameras are present.

Anyway...

I don't think we should kid ourselves about what's going on here. Wikipedia is teaching people how to abuse, torture and rape women, and they're not even trying to hide it anymore. Without the image, you could almost argue that the article was comical; with the image, it crosses the line. They never really had any shame to begin with, but now they're actively trying to impose an evil and malicious set of anti-values on society, consequences be damned.

Sorry, but that's just how I feel about this.

No, you need Sue Gardner's face on the woman, and then have a debate about whether it's beyond the pale. It might actually be a good metaphor, tbh.

Hey Somey, don't apologise. I'm with you on this. I guess I was looking to see how far pleas of 'no censorship' would go if the god-king himself was being donkey-punched in animation parody: Cos I don't know if cunningly linguistic is misogynist, trolling, delightfully ironic, or pushing a pro-wikipedia agenda. Could be any of them.

All odd. Not being following this as I've not been involved with Wikipedia in an editing sense for years (or year and months, can't remember) and forgot my password for my account on this site. And the email address.

But enough woe is me.

One issue I have is an apparent "this doesn't actually happen" like donkey punch could, theoretically, become so well-known through Wikipedia and its related Google juice to then inspire enough real-world comment to get an article.

Not really the situation with donkey punch as the expression pre-dated Wikipedia and there was a motion picture made with the same title, but it does raise the issue of Wikipedia fulfilling its own prophecies by giving marginal/worthless/etc articles the promotion they need to then be mainstream and, lo and behold, worthy of a Wikipedia article.

I do wonder what would be people's responses if this cartoon was representing gay sex and a MAN was being punched in the head by another man - you know - to enhance the sexual experience 'n all.

And by people, I mean those who are so enamoured with producing a Donkey Punch article and their little animation.

Probably a moot question - I'm pretty sure that if it were a strictly gay thing, they'd have live-action video.

The Snowballing (sexual practice) (T-H-L-K-D) article used to have an image of two women cum-swapping, even though the text described an act between a man and a woman. When the image was changed, so the man was the receiver, complaints went up, even though it now at least matched the text.

Go figure.

In that case she should be facing the other way in the animation.

I can picture a number of people who would argue earnestly that it would be a poignant and educational illustration of the Wikimedia Gendergap that could be used in a myriad educational contexts. In fact, the http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hot_sex_barnstar.png is educational too, because it can educate the public about Commons. So you see? It's all educational.

At any rate, it would be no worse than a homemade Santorum caricature painted with dogshit. They've hosted several of those in Commons, and only just managed to delete them.

Yes.

My use of the 'gay' scenario was nothing to do with gay sex, actually, it was to do with violence against men, and how acceptable THAT sort of animation would be. That animation isn't about sex, it's about violence, a non-consensual act. The whole 'Donkey Punch' debacle is underscored by the issue of violence, against women. I was drawing attention to that, because it's getting lost in that whole thing going on over there.

So with this in mind, bearing in mind that Sue Gardner's witterings about women and gender are, rightfully, disdained (she's missed so many of the actual points about the problem of gender in the context of Wikipedia), having her as the woman in that animation vitually legitimises the Donkey Punch! That's the topsy-turvy crazy zany world of Wikipedia sexual politics we live in.
