No, it's because the USA is just starting to realise that its Super Power status will soon be gone and handed on to China and India, the poor dears are panicking and lashing out.

No, it's because the USA is just starting to realise that its Super Power status will soon be gone and handed on to China and India, the poor dears are panicking and lashing out.

There's nothing new about that theory. People have bemoaned the fall of the US since at least the 70's, as far as I can remember. Superpowers don't last, and their terms are becoming shorter; 1000 years for the Romans, 600 years for the Ottomans, 400 years for the Russians, 100 years for the British ...

What the future holds is unknown. China might very well become the next superpower, or they might explode like a powder keg, its people sick of shitty wages and working conditions, sick of laboring for the benefit of the West's living standard more than their own, with a government unable to reverse the situation no matter how mighty their military and economics. China has some of the oldest and most sophisticated diplomacy in the world, going back a thousand years. It's rivaled in experience only by the Vatican, I hear. But the world is changing, society is changing. A fallen superpower nowadays is different from those of the past with their nukes and all. Who knows what the next sixty years will bring? The one thing I can predict with confidence is more wars centered around scarce resources.

I have less faith in India to run the world ... Despite their enormous population, deep culture, sophistication of their upper classes and educational opportunities, they have trouble working cohesively on the big things. For example, India has been trying for decades to replace the Russian hardware in their space launch fleet, but they just can get their cryogenic engines to work.

Maybe the next superpower won't be a country at all. Most industrialized nations are interdependent, unable to exist without international trade and commerce to an extent never before seen in history. Power over that might be power to control nations and their wars.

Who knows what the future will bring?

I think it far more likely that the USA will implode and end up divided into at least three seperate nations.

Europe will be speaking Arabic before that happens.

Wait, didn't we lose an expensive piece of hardware a few years back over the skies of Mars because some idiot programmed it to use metric vs. US standard (or was it vice versa)?

that was item number 873 on the list that India can't get to 3 on, even though India has many first rate scientists and institutions. There's something going on there I don't understand.

Incidentally, 15 years ago there were wild predictions that India was going to eat our lunch when it came to software engineering, and that Microsoft would soon be out of business. More recently, American semiconductor equipment manufacturers have been opening design centers in India to do work that's currently done in the US - designing 'tools', the multi-million dollar machines that fabricate semiconductors. It will be interesting to see how that goes.

let's see how well Assage's life goes after releasing Israeli secrets.

The Israelis will give him one polite warning first, like they did Gerald Bull.

The Russians won't even do that much. Will that be ricin or polonium, Mr. Assange? Neither one is much fun.

At least polonium comes with sushi.

here's the official release site;

http://cablegate.wikileaks.org/

Wikileaks has clearly singled out the US with sanctimonious rhetoric. It's definitely an assault.

A tweet by Larry Sanger was quoted in The Guardian today.

QUOTE(Larry Sanger to Wikileaks)
Speaking as Wikipedia's co-founder, I consider you enemies of the U.S.--not just the government, but the people.

I wonder if the sole flounder, Jimbo, views Wikileaks as 'enemies of the U.S'? I doubt it somehow. Or at least he wouldn't put it in such melodramatic terms if he did.

This was discussed in another WR thread. Not sure which one.

When I first read the quote, I misread the title of the thread and thought the quote was from Jimbo, and thought to myself that was an awfully uncharacteristic thing for him to say. Not the sentiment, just the particular phrasing. It's very Sangeresque.

Personally I haven't decided whether or not I believe what Wikileaks is doing is overall a good or a bad thing, nor how much of an impact it's really going to have on anything. As was pointed out by others, 3 million people already had direct access to that information, and who knows how many millions of others already had obtained it indirectly.

WikiLeaks isn't the problem. WikiLeaks is just a medium for the problem to speak out. WikiLeaks is the host, not the source for the information. The problem is the people disclosing the information. If WikiLeaks didn't exist, the people with the classified intelligence would simply disclose the information to a different medium.

I'm not sure whether WikiLeaks is good or bad, but it is certainly politically and ideologically modivated. For better or worse, they seek to discredit the United States. I don't think that anyone could deny the fact that WikiLeaks is extremely powerful for a website.

Not necessarily true. While the Wikipedia pokemon articles might find another home if wikipedia didn't exist, it's certainly true that the existence of such a site incites the creation/distribution of this kind of information. It's much more attractive for many people to publish on such a site than to contact a journalist, for example.

Meh, who cares?

Other that the fact they've both got "Wiki" in their name, and it gives Sanger an opportunity to get in another protestation for his creation of Wikipedia, what's he got to do with this?

Wikileaks is just another in a long line of liberal, smug, sanctimonious anti-American bigots. Note that their stated mission as a 'whistle-blower' isn't born out by their actions; last major release of the 'war-logs' revealed negligible fallout, no major cover-ups, just hundreds of thousands of mostly mundane documents posted that don't belong on that website.

Wikileaks motives are clear; 1) make themselves famous and earn a living being self-righteous pains in the ass, and 2) engage in America-bashing.

If they wanted to be whistle-blowers they'd post documents that reveal cover-ups. But they don't, for the most part. They post hundreds of thousands of documents for no other purpose than to embarrass the US.

Wikileaks isn't interested in the truth or justice or revealing coverups, they are interested in America-bashing and fame and self-righteous frothing at the mouth. If you have any doubts, read their cablegate rationale, written in the tone of a spoiled surly fourteen-year-old.

Sarah Palin's personal emails, anyone? There's some earth shattering cover-ups revealed!

As a number of my Facebook Buddies have observed, there is a certain irony in our gubermint whining about having its privates probed.

My own thinking is that maybe Ass∠ should rename Wikileaks to Wikipatdown …

Whatever you think about what WikiLeaks stand for and is achieving, the 'rationale' page that you link to was clearly written by adults, whereas your rant two posts above is the very immature huff-and-puff you are accusing them of.

He doesn't even append it any more, does he? "Speaking as Wikipedia's co-founder, I consider you enemies of the U.S.--not just the government, but the people." It's pretty clear which is the more important fact to Larry!
