Well, I am very angry to have someone like SDJ harassing me online by
advertising that he is willing to send private correspondence out.

SDJ is not being stalked. We live in different parts of the USA and I have
no way to reach him.

The RfA, like Wikipedia, is no big deal.

I am sorry you feel victimized. No need to respond.

Be happy.

I stupid set about trying to rid Wikipedia of the sexuality stuff, in hopes

David has been hounding this woman for weeks because of a statement that
she made about her sexuality. He has posted twice about this on his blog.
He has wikilawyered over this information being included on her article. He
has written on your talkpage, Jimbo, talking about the "good press" this has
gotten, after convincing "After Ellen" to run with this story (and a nice
promo blurb for him, too....).

You have said nothing. And you have done nothing.

How is this woman's situation any different than what happened to you after
the Rachael Marsden business? And how does knowing that this woman is
bisexual or not add anything to our understanding of why she is notable? Is
Flaubert therefore a transsexual because he said that "Madame Bovary" was
him? Is Proust suddenly proven heterosexual because his heroine is named
"Albertine", instead of "Albert"?

More importantly, would a reputable encyclopedia print this information?
No. Would the National Enquirer? Probably not, because she's not
*that*kind of notable.

Finally, she says that because she is of Cuban origin and from a politically
left family, that giving out this information would be potentially dangerous
to her and to her family. What information do you have that disproves this?

When are you people going to figure out that you do not have the right to
treat people's personal lives in this manner? When are you going to take
steps to discipline people who carry on attack campaigns such as this? And
when are you finally going to apologize for all of the people who have been
hurt by these kinds of people?

I am not so sure. I think the Wikipedia aspect to the nasty harassment that
this author received is relatively incidental.

The problems seem to have started when an interview she gave to a completely
different site achieves a wider currency than she expected. It seems that
her answer was poorly phrased and open to misunderstanding. The information
from the interview is added to her biography the day it is published but it
is a fairly minimal and neutral entry (
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...oldid=235477368
).

I take note of the fact that Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez admits in her blog entry
that attempting to remove this information from Wikipedia was stupid.
However David Shankbone is only involved once in reverting her:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...oldid=260395435.
His subsequent questions on the talk page are pointed but relevant, and I
don't read them as wikilawyering. On the other hand, the IP identified as
the subject makes legal threats. It was not apparent that the IP was the
subject of the article until later.

I don't think we have any jurisdiction over David Shankbone's blog. I also
think that AfterEllen.com's interviews would normally count as a reliable
source for the comments of the subjects of the interview. If the article on
it is right, AfterEllen.com is ultimately owned by Viacom. The subsequent
run-in between the editor and Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez happened nearly two
months after her sexuality was removed from the article.

The absolute extent of the case against David Shankbone would be that he
regards it as unambiguously good news when it is much more nuanced. But is
he harassing her? Not so far as I can see (if anything it is the other way
round). There's no evidence he encouraged the editor of AfterEllen.com to
follow up on Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez' interview - in fact she only seems to
have spotted the dispute very late on.

The nasty harassment of Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez which she mentions was
already going on when she was nine. The controversial interview was
accurately written up in her biography but has been out of it for two
months. Ultimately the fact is that WP:BLP is not a licence for subjects to
remove anything from their biographies that they do not want reported.

Yeah, I really honestly believe that Davis Shankbone has "nothing" to do
with the fact that Encyclopedia Dramatica loves to feature me, and the
"fact" that my 5-year-old daughter is not of my seed. I can surely see why
Shankbone's blog was given the featured placement on the Planet Wikimedia
blog feeder, and how he's coddled on Wikipedia.

Thank you, guys, for not having intervened with Shankbone a year ago, when
we told you he was nothing but trouble.

Can someone remind me of whether and how we deal with off-wiki
conduct? I followed some of the debates on this, but am not full up to
speed. What does it actually say in our policies, for example?

Yes, I agree blogs like that are bad, but is this one of those slippery slopes?

I think because he chooses his victims wisely is the main reason. A
terrible but sad truth is that people often have failures of objectivity
when someone unpopular (Kohs) is being picked on.
