The motivation of characters like Squeakbox is actually a key question in the puzzle of
What Makes Jimmy Run — in other words, what keeps Wikipedia going in spite of everything so far.
I did not run into Squeakbox myself in the year I was there, but I did know many characters like him. They are, left to themselves, very nice people. They will sit and chat with you on your talk page, very simpatico-like, when you've been blocked from editing anywhere else. You might say they are nice to a fault, since their compelling need for camaraderie and for everyone to "just get along" will lead them to stab you in the back when you least expect it — well, least expect it the first couple of times — and if not that, then at least to stand by in silence when others take you down, or else just to split, as they "really hate to see" that kind of thing happen, so they just close their eyes when it does.
But Jimbo's Con Job absolutely depends on these kinds of characters — among a cast of many others, for instance, Warriors of the Saturday variety — so everything is done to keep them in the system, at least, for now.
