Haven't been able to follow all the Ins & Outs of this affair, but could someone please explain to me why anyone is celebrating any kind of victory here? I mean, it looks to me like Wikipediocrats have succeeded in abrogating Piper's freedom of association and freedom of speech all in one foul swipe.

What Piperdown has done is to demonstrate how much work it takes to achieve a rare exception to Moulton's Law: One a bureaucracy makes a mistake, it can't be fixed.

That is not my question.

My question is — Why does anyone think that anything got fixed?

Wishful thinking that Wikipedia is not quite as hopeless as we all have feared?

I was under the impression that this is
what Piperdown wanted them to do.

They didn't forbid him. He made an offer.

NYB - just remove the ban, delete the subpage, leave the user and talk pages in tact as there is nothing there against WP rules, and I'll place a Retired noticed at the top of both pages, scramble the account password, and begone from WP and WR. I want nothing to do with volunteering my efforts for the profit of the WMF or the sort of people representing it on WP at this time. Pretty clear i think.

I'm sorry, my mistake, no hint of duress there at all.
