QUOTE(dogbiscuit @ Fri 28th March 2008, 12:39am) Troll Alert! Troll Alert! We must block Tor, we must block Tor. Oh, bother, we've just blocked Slim and her socks. Ah, we need a new policy. How can we dress that up? I know, AGF works well for booting out trolls, we can use that test here. How small an exception is the exception to an exception for unestablished users?
Administrators are already immune to IP blocks.

Administrators are already immune to IP blocks. So when another administrator blocks another administrator, the block really doesn't work?

Administrators are already immune to IP blocks. So when another administrator blocks another administrator, the block really doesn't work? It works because your account is directly blocked - autoblocks don't work on admins, for example - but a direct block can obviously be overridden by the blocked admin. Which is, of course, a Really Bad Thing. Back when the last one or two rouge events occurred, I remember the admin being blocked, then unblocking themselves seconds later.

Autoblock does work on admins, or at least it used to. I remember many occasions when someone would unblock me but the autoblock would still be there, and I'd have to request that somebody kill the autoblock too.

Administrators are already immune to IP blocks. Not necessarily. A an ip block defaults to just blocking ip's, but it can also be set to block the ip and any registered user going through that ip (last time I looked). This would include administrators, but then administrators can remove the block, whether it is an ip block or a user block. The last time I looked admins could unblock themselves, but doing so invites an emergency desysoping. This post has been edited by Pumpkin Muffins: Fri 28th March 2008, 7:28am

You are speaking of the difference between a "soft" block and a "hard" block. Neither type of block on an IP address affects administrators editing from that IP. Or, to put it more explicitly - the fine-grained permission bit that the proposal is suggesting creating a new user group for, is already part of the sysop "package", so the new group - like rollbacker - would be absolutely meaningless on an administrator. phase3/includes/DefaultSettings.php: CODE $wgGroupPermissions['sysop']['ipblock-exempt'] = true;
