If anything, Brandt has been calling for less openness and transparency, hasn't he? I mean, a huge part of the problem all along is that too much content on Wikipedia (talk pages, RfC's, Arbcom cases, policy pages) is available via Google searches - not just articles. If WP would hide all that stuff from search engines completely, that would be a major improvement right there, without really impacting the site's usefulness as a reference work very much, if at all.

One might note that WikiEN-L and other mailing list archives are either unindexed or poorly-ranked by Google... Some terrible things are said about all sorts of people on those lists, and hardly anyone complains about it.

And I'm hesitant to say this, but there's never been any question that Brandt is vindictive - I mean, the sky is blue, the Pope is Catholic, and Brandt is vindictive. If one takes the attitude of "Wikipedia is there, it does what it does, so deal with it," then what's the difference? Brandt is there, he does what he does... So?

Admittedly, vacuum-tube amplification technology has always been closely associated with profanity, at least when one of the tubes blows up and starts a fire onstage, causing most musicians to say, "Oh shit, the stage is on fire! Get me the fuck out of here!" Luckily, that almost never happens. You're more likely to cause a fire by careless use of high-pressure propane cartridges with blowtorches than by exploding vacuum tubes - and most of those fires are intentional anyway.

Like Alison, I entered Wikipedia expecting to write or improve encyclopedia articles. It hadn't occurred to me that I would have to defend myself against the insidious Spammish Inquisition.

Yes, Brandt's point often seems to be that it's fine to be open and transparent... as long as you make sure that hardly anybody actually sees it.

I understand what you're saying Somey, but I think "Brandt is political" would be a better description than "Brandt is vindictive." When I discovered SlimVirgin's stub on me in October 2005, using two citations from pro-Google fanboys, that was one thing. Then within a couple of weeks, I discovered that Slim was in cahoots with Chip Berlet, and had already denounced me on a Talk page in order to protect Berlet, by deleting someone's reference to something I had written about him. This was my first exposure to Wikipedia. I had never read Wikipedia before October 2005, except for one or two popular-culture articles that crossed my path.

Remember, Berlet and I became political enemies way back in 1991. He's more political (vindictive?) than I am. I immediately tried to get the stub deleted, and emailed Jimbo. He defended Slim. My next question was, "Who the hell is SlimVirgin?"

Yes, I'm political. When I decided that Wikipedia was even easier for people like Slim and Chip to game, than Google is easy to game for the pro-Google ecommerce types, I declared war on my bio. I knew that Wikipedia ranked on top of all the search engines and pretended to be an encyclopedia, and I knew that when it comes to applying for a job, or applying for a grant from a foundation, the first thing they do is google your name.

I agree with you that they should set a noindex flag for all bots on every page except for mainspace articles. That means all user pages and all talk pages. Part of the reason I had to get that redirect deleted is because there are several hundred backlinks to the now-deleted Daniel_Brandt bio on internal Wikipedia pages. Perhaps a half-dozen are from mainspace articles, and all the rest are from Talk pages and User pages. That stuff never disappears from any of the engines, and it kept pumping juice even after the semi-successful AfD last June, via Wikipedia's so-called "redirect" to the PIR article that wasn't even a real redirect.

In a few weeks, the PIR article will will rank around 30 instead of in the top ten in a search for my name, judging from last December. It was deleted by Doc_glasgow last December, and after a week it dropped from number 1 in Google to number 23. After a few more weeks it would have dropped more, but then JoshuaZ came in, backed up by at least one sock, and slapped down Doc_glasgow with a DRV. JoshuaZ was very vocal in that DRV, and his sock voted also. (This is the same JoushuaZ who wrote the phrase "his edits were disgusting and engendered in me a level of contempt I normally have for Daniel Brandt" on a Talk page on 2006-08-11, which was months before I even knew JoshuaZ existed.)

When a person has political instincts, and feels threatened by hostile forces, it may look like vindictiveness to an outsider. But it's really just a matter of survival. My next project is to get that last paragraph in the PIR article deleted. The only reason it's there is because Berlet wants it there. The wording used to be much more POV, and believe it or not, it used to be in the first paragraph instead of the last paragraph.
