I think you all know how much it pains me to e-dulge in this Variety™ of Φan-Φare-Φluφφery, but recent performances on the global stage quite literally force my hand …

¤ clap ¤

¤ clap ¤

¤ clap ¤

I wouldn't even think of nominating Guy Chapman's Meta.Wikimedia Page as anything approaching the standard of a Best Performance — though you have to admire that sly Bit Of Product Spotting (BOPS) with regard to his own personal website — but I just thought I'd toss out a recently spied example to start the snowball rolling, even if it's rather too drily, dully, and hum-drumly typical of its genre.

So Come On, You Odd Gangliæ O' My X-Tended Mind, I know that all of you are just dying to root-kit for your own personal — or even impersonational — fave-ruts, and I'm sure that most of you can dig up Far More Funtasdick Nominees than Guy's old rag of auto-blurbitude. All languages, projects, and even vanity talk pages are e-ligible to enter.

I am JzG on the English Wikipedia (enWP), where I have been a sysop since January. On meta, I am mainly involved with the spam blacklist, and have been since April 2006. I am active in removing spam form [sic] enWP and tracking cross-wiki spam. I am also an OTRS volunteer. On OTRS, I concentrate on the courtesy, copyvio and quality queues. I particularly look out for violations of our policy on biographies of living individuals. You can also sometimes find me on #wikimedia-otrs, #wikipedia-en-admins, aka The Cabal (TINC) and on the mailing lists WikiEN-l, unblock-en-l, OTRS-en-l. All of which does not leave me much time for prettifying my user page, assuming I cared enough to do so, which I don't. I don't even update my website very often these days, although it was linked by Chris Boardman in a magazine article recently so perhaps I should.

If there is anything you want to know about me, please feel free to ask, either email me or ask on my Talk page here or on enWP. I note that we now have email notification of changes here, so the main reason I originally redirected everything to my enWP pages is now gone.

Find me also at: en:User:JzG, fr:Utilisateur:JzG, de:Benutzer:JzG, wikt:User:JzG. Most activity on other projects is to do with tracking vandalism out of enWP, though. I do not have much tolerance for spammers, vandals or POV-pushers.

en-N : This user can read and write at a native level in English.

C'mon, Jon. This is a lay-up. Beating out Jimbo and Shankbone's pages, we have the winner in Elonka Dunin:

Hello! I'm Elonka Dunin. I am a writer, game developer, cryptologist, webmistress, public speaker, world-traveller, and appreciator of all kinds of different subcultures. smile.gif

I've had a Wikipedia account since September 16, 2005, made my 1000th edit on January 19, 2006, and was approved as an administrator on December 14, 2007. As of June 2008 I have created or substantially expanded over 325 Wikipedia articles, and have made around 43,000 edits,[6] which I guess puts me somewhere in the top 200 of active Wikipedians.

Much of my time is spent either writing/improving articles, or working on some of the above WikiProjects. I also occasionally help out at some of the other language Wikis (see my list at left), but mostly I spend time in the English Wikipedia. Previous to becoming an admin, I especially enjoyed helping out with categorization, trying to ensure that every single article either has a category, or is at least flagged as needing one. Now that I have administrator access, I am helping out in other areas, such as reviewing the Wikipedia dispute resolution process, and helping out at Arbitration Enforcement. I am also one of the people chosen by the Arbitration Committee for the Working group on ethnic and cultural edit wars, and am experimenting with some different techniques on addressing this chronic problem.

Of the articles that I've written or expanded, the ones that I am most proud of include: Knights Templar, Pauline Fowler, Dirty Dancing, Fustat, The White Bird, Franco-Mongol alliance, SS Kronprinz Wilhelm, Alfred Niezychowski, Saint Raphael Kalinowski, Black Stone, Eric Bloom, August Czartoryski, Ed Bradley, Hajj, and Isra and Mi'raj.

For my day job, I'm a professional game developer working in St. Charles, Missouri, and a published author. My book The Mammoth Book of Secret Codes and Cryptograms was published internationally in early 2006. As a hobby, I maintain some popular websites on the subject of cryptography, especially famous unsolved codes and the CIA's Kryptos sculpture, and I show up on TV or in the news every so often. I'm also a public speaker, usually giving talks on the subjects of games, Wikipedia, or cryptography.

Wikipedia is currently my #1 hobby, and I can't seem to get enough of writing articles and helping behind-the-scenes. smile.gif I think Wikipedia is an amazing concept that is going to continue to grow quite rapidly. I often scan through the new articles that are flowing in at a rate of thousands per day, and I am humbled by the sheer quantity of information that's accumulating in this massive project. I am very proud to be a part of it.

I must agree with Greg here - Elonka Dunin's user page is easily the most self-promotional page on Wikipedia, rivalled only by her self-written, meatpuppet supported…

Well, Elonka was the first to beat the WP COI game and she's still there! She's got the game down pat and without her, none of the other contenders would have had the nerve!

These days I'd concur and give it to Elonka.

But for all-time self-aggrandizement, unwarranted self importance and jus' plain ol' fashioned sheer Walter Mitty audacity I'd have to go for the all-time classic:

Could a Global Modulator please move this topic to the Meta-Diss Forum? Despite the humorous set-up there was a serious point to this thread, and I'd like to sort out the various tangents over the next few days if I could.

Danke,

Sorry, Guys, er, Dudes, your e-pinions don't e-mount to a hill o' beans when you stack 'em up against Guy Chapmam's Infallible Ex-Cathedra Bulls —

The Mild-Mannered Web Vita that I have used about the Web for years has been declared the DarkHorse Winner in the Category of Shamless Self-Promotion.
Eat YerOut !

Data
P.S. Give me a while to re-format the section quoted below. I mean, what good is Shameless Self-Promotion if nobody can read it?

QUOTE

Jon Awbrey‎ and JonAwbrey‎
Jon Awbrey‎
JonAwbrey

Creates userpages full of external links (and selfpromotion references?) on many wikis. Annabel 19:08, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

: I placed the same vita on my user page that I use on all the sites where I contribute work and discuss ideas with other interested parties. This does not constitute SPAM (= "unsolicited mass-mailing or posting") in any technical or COI sense of the word. I would appreciate the two variants of my real name that I use on the Internet and Web not being listed on any kind of badlists. Thank you, Jon Awbrey 19:12, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

:: While it may not be spam, it would seem to be abuse of WMF wikis & as such unwanted. While community members are given leeway with their userpages, such excessive linking is generally frowned upon. Furthermore, I very much doubt you understand all the languages you have posted this to, nor are you active in those wikis. I invite you to fix the problem before it is done for you. The history at enwiki will be of interest to others reviewing this. ::: I would appreciate it if you could point to the relevant WMF Terms of Service, or even a generally accepted standard of etiquette that would justify your calling this user page vita an "Abuse". I am referring to the one now posted here at Meta, which is a copy of the one deleted by Annabel from my Nederlands User Page. By "generally accepted standard of etiquette" I mean one that you could honestly assure me is followed across the board on all WMF User Pages. In addition, I have never seen any notice of Wikipedias being "Encyclopedias that anyone who is fluent in the local language can edit" — but please let me know if I have missed such a restriction somewhere. Jon Awbrey 20:22, 29 August 2008 (

:::: You misunderstand me crucially. I do not say you need to be fluent in the languages where you contribute. To claim that would be hypocritical; I edit all WMF wikis. The issue is that:

# You are not an established member of the community on any wiki where you have a userpage (so far as I can tell).
# Your userpage has an excessive amount of links (indeed, links form the only content, and they appear to be placed for self-promotional purposes). This would perhaps be an issue regardless of the above.

[Undent]: Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not think it is customary for newcomers to any of the many-tongued Wikipædiæ to be subjected to the ordeals of this type of entrance exam with regard to the legitimacy of their participation. However, By FYIing my real name, educational background, and ongoing intellectual interests, I have certainly done more than the avarage Anon IP on that score.

Many people post pics on their user pages as a way of providing a friendly introduction to themselves, their current interests, and their personal histories. My old web vita harks back to a day when I was unsure about the propriety of copying pics, so I used links instead, over the years being forced to replace many of them with WayBak links. You can hardly dream that I am collecting revenue off archival links like that, can you?

If and when you personally discover an interest in some of the Active Suggestions Concerning Intellectual Interchange that I enumerated in my web vita — which was my sole purpose in posting it to my NL User Page — then we may find more interesting things to talk about. In the mean time, I can hardly become an "established member of the community on any wiki", much less learn a few bits of the local colour and language, if some Admin deletes my self-introductory user page and blocks my account after the first few edits, now can I? Jon Awbrey 23:45, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

* Jon, this same sort of Wikilawyering nonsense is what got you banned from enWP and booted from the mailing list. Obviously your rampant sockpuppetry and disruption ensures you remain banned on enWP. I would be the first to help you if you wanted your massive list of socks associated with some other name, to reduce the impact on you, but I don't see why we should help you to pretend that you are here to do anything other than the usual: self-promotion and idiosyncratic original research. JzG 20:50, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

:: Still placing pages - en wq in the past few hours. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:00, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

::: This is shameless self-promotion, and I would suggest that someone who has the necessary rights removes the pages from all projects on which he is not an active participant. JzG 11:44, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
