The 2009 Wikipedia Review WP:DICK of Distinction Awards Pageant

It's all about the drama.

Image
A hearty welcome to the members of the academy as this year's voting begins!

Voting instructions

For the WP:DICK, Straight Shooter and Cojones de latón events, there will be a winner and a runner-up chosen. Votes cast in the first WP:DICK list will each be counted as two points, while votes cast in the second, runner-up list will count as one point; therefore, you have three points which you may divide among the candidates as you wish. The candidate who receives the most votes from the two combined lists will be crowned the winner, while the candidate with the second highest total is runner-up. The same goes for the Straight Shooter and Cojones de latón events. For the remaining events, the Miss Incongeniality and Tag Team competitions, there will be only one winner and each vote counts for one point.

Electioneering

Electionioneering within 100 feet of the polling area is both permitted and encouraged. You may compose a cogent statement of endorsement, extolling the vices or virtues of your favorite competitor.

A note from the Program and Catering Committee

Wikipedia remains a dominant force in the entertainment industry because it adapts quickly to changing times. Thus, some of the superstars of the WP:DICK competitions of years past are now contenders in the Cojones de latón category, showing that versatility is the hallmark of the seasoned performer. Therefore, dear members of the Academy, vote with pride, knowing that your voice will be heard, and will help keep Wikipedia in the forefront of the pop culture dream factory!

Endorsement of Jayjg

QUOTE(The Adversary @ Fri 30th January 2009, 7:57am) *

Jayjg has always been my perennial favourite for the WP:DICK award, but I confess: he has failed me miserably this year. Ok, ok, he did try a few feeble attempts to live up to former glory; like this (in case you missed it):

User:Nagel nominates one of Jayjg´s synagogue-articles for deletion

Jayjg is not happy.

Now, User:Nagel tells you on his user-page that he is the guy who came up with Nagle's algorithm. So, Jayjg, that famous editor of computer algorithms tongue.gif .. immediately goes and adds a {{notability}} to Nagle's algorithm article. Ah, nice try, Jay! (The {{notability}} was quickly removed by one of the regular math/computer-guys)

It´s actions like this that so endear Jay to many people. But all in all, there simply are not enough of them this year to qualify for the highest distinction from WR. Sorry, Jay!

Ah, but when Jay fails us, we have a new valued candidate fighting for the vacated DICKish throne, I am of course thinking of Elonka (More about her, later biggrin.gif )

(PS: the synagogue-article was kept.)

Endorsement of Will Beback

Will Beback has an in-depth knowledge of Wikipedia policies, and he knows that there are two sides to each and every one of them: the one that applies to those who share your POV, and the one for the other fellows. Thus, Will is a stern enforcer of WP:RS when it comes to criticism of people he likes, while being a liberal inclusionist for sources that smear people he dislikes. He finds sockpuppets behind every edit that doesn't jibe with his POV, demanding summary execution of the suspects, while on the other hand, for the obvious socks that take his side of disputes, he is a regular Perry Mason, insisting upon due process and ironclad proof. He shows up at every ANI or ArbCom dispute, arguing opposite interpretations of policy with equal facility, depending on which side of the POV he's on. My esteemed colleague Piperdown put it best when he said, "Willbeback is a hypocritical wanker."

(emphasis added)

Technically, this is not **quite** correct, in that if your wish is to give out one point to each of three candidates, you cannot. I don't actually see that as a problem per se, and am not asking for a change in the voting mechanics, but I'm the sort of nitpicker who cannot help but point this sort of thing out when I spot it. smile.gif

Thanks for adding the "I don't want to vote in this category" options from the get go.

Endorsements :

WP:DICK of Distinction -- David Gerard. Now that JzG is a sad, spent force in the cabal, after repeated arse-kicks by Wikipedia Review and multiple warnings from his Wiki "pals", DG is the new Queen. And he loves every moment of it, too.

WP:DICK runner-up -- FT2. OK, so he's a Dick on Wikipedia. But it's mostly his recent performances here that are deserving of an award. There's just something ..... missing ..... in this man. Maybe a win will help him. Who knows?

The Straight Shooter -- Bishonen. I have to admit this is mainly for the destruction of FT2's ArbConcy.

Straight Shooter runner-up -- No vote.

Cojones de latón : Peter Damian. Pete is a one-man war of attrition, chipping away one flake at a time, slow and steady, like a glacier. Can (usually) keep his cool, as with his recent interactions with former hero Giana, who's tragic fall over the past year is equalled only by JzG's.

Cojones de latón runner-up -- The Fat Man Who Never Came Back. Just for the general trolling, particularly this gem on Sidaway's talkpage. Heh!

Miss Incongeniality -- Elonka. She's such an unpleasant individual, isn't she? Well deserving of an award.

The Tag-Team Event -- Odd nature, etc. Rude, and entertaining at the same time. Go. guys, go!

Non-Endorsements :

Durova, Giano, JoshuaZ and Orangemarlin being in the Cojones de latón section. Very silly.

Non-endorsements: OM in cajones? For what? Crying? No. GlassCobra and EVula in the Dick category? Why? No.

Endorsements: Gerard is the WP:VAG of the year. Thatcher is the straight shooter. Cla68 has the cajones with a tip of the hat to Fat Man, and the rest go to those commonly referred to as the IDCab.

Bzzt! Wrong answer. No partial credit. The person you're thinking of is Thatcher, who posed the unanswered questions to FT2 and pressed him on it, with the attention of Jimbo and the whole ArbCom. Without Thatcher, Bish's POINTy block would have been uselessly bounced (and probably sanctioned).

Seriously, any second place in this category is a distant second. Thatcher's record for 2008:

1. Checkusered Samiharris and actually posted the suspicious results. I don't think many other CUs would have even filled the request--it was made by WordBomb, after all. Look at how JzG argued that it should be deleted and forgotten because a banned user posted it. Thatcher stood his ground, even though he had been a CU for only a couple weeks. Without Thatcher's work, there would be no SirFozzie investigation, and I would give even money that Mantanmoreland and Samiharris would still be editing today.

2. Thatcher busted Bassettcat after he had been given a clean bill of health. Mantan slipped up once and only once, and Thatcher's diligence vindicated people like me who believed him a sockpuppeteer. There's no way I could have been elected without this vindication.

3. Thatcher challenged the practices of CUs, Oversighters, and Arbitrators and sounded the trumpet for reform. You think Giano has guts for cussing at people who loath him? Well, Thatcher went after the most highly-placed Wikipedians--not because he personally disliked them, but out of principle. He did it effectively too; the ball is rolling. It's one thing to be annoyed by the site's double standards, but Thatcher is actually effective at fixing them.

4. As I mentioned, Thatcher was key to the FT2 inquiry. Thatcher knew some tidbits and asked some simple questions, which turned out to be unanswerable. He did it tastefully, effectively, and fairly.

5. Prolific and principled checkuser.

No one else is even close.

JzG doesn't have the general clout on Wikipedia he used to have, but he still has a lot of power in the narrow areas he frequents now, such as the spam blacklist (which he abuses to suppress sources he doesn't like for the purpose of getting the upper hand in editorial disputes) and in making and enforcing blocks and bans of people with some involvement in pseudoscience issues if they lack sufficient powerful friends on Wikipedia to stop him. All of this is done, apparently, in "good faith" to stop the scourge of "fringe" viewpoints on Wikipedia.

I can never get up the intense hatred of David Gerard that others around here seem to have, seeing that he actually came out kinda-sorta on "my side" in the BADSITES wars, at least to the extent of thinking that imposing link bans was a silly and counterproductive idea.

I agree. Although I enjoyed Giano's fake candidacy, the others are fairly odious.

Endorsement of Cla68

Cla reminds me of George Smiley in the John le Carré novels -- he's not glamorous, he doesn't have an Aston Marton or a laser wristwatch, but he has the meticulous gumshoe persistence it takes to do something like this, and that's what wins wars when the chips are down.

So you're the one! Thank you. Also, what the hell is wrong with you?

I haven't voted yet, and will only do so in the straight shooter and cojones categories. Leaning strongly towards Thatcher in the former.

Update: And now I've voted. Thatcher first and Cool Hand Luke second in the straight shooter category, Alanyst first and Fat Man second for cojones. Newyorkbrad almost made the cut in the first, Cla68 almost made it in the second.

well I've been busting my moves with the best of them over the last little while, and being in Oz wish to compete fiercely in anything!

Vote Me! (I have the familiar sinking feeling here that I should probably back that up with some sort of list of achievements or something, but well, unfortunately there aren't any really)

Vote me anyways! - who else has drawn attention to the 'downblouse' shots on commons, as well as the 'upskirts' evilgrin.gif

Well, in the first day of voting, David Gerard has broken from the pack in the DICK competition with 28 points, trailed by Ryan Postlethwaite with 15 and Raul654 with 14. No one else thus far has made it out of single digits. In the Straight Shooter match, Thatcher is mopping the floor with the competition, having amassed 38 points, with Cool Hand Luke in second position with 23 and Alison in third with 17.

No one is terribly surprised to see JoshuaZ or Orangemarlin skunked in the first day's Cojones competition, but the pundits were caught by surprise as SlimVirgin pulled ahead of Giano 6 to 4. None of them poses a threat to Cla68, who holds a commanding lead with 42 points. The Fat Man is a distant second with 24.

In the Tag Team event, it looks like the ID Cabal is the team to beat. In the most hotly contested race, Miss Incongeniality, JzG and Elonka are tied with 10 points each, and KillerChihuahua is in the running with 6. popcorn.gif

By the way, I've been informed that while "cajones de laton" might be a correct literal translation of the phrase we use in English, that it isn't actually used by native Spanish speakers. I'm told that the equivalent phrase in Spanish is "Bolas de oro".

In the most hotly contested race, Miss Incongeniality, JzG and Elonka are tied with 10 points each, and KillerChihuahua is in the running with 6. popcorn.gif

I really enjoy this time of year on WR because of this brilliant race calling.
