Does anyone know which Wikipedia article this guy used? When I Google how to deliver a baby, there are no Wikipedia articles on the first page of results, and the first result is from wikiHow, which has nothing to do with Wikipedia, correct? Wikipedia takes credit for something they didn't do, again...??

It's not so much them taking credit as the media giving them credit. True, but will someone from the WMF say it wasn't Wikipedia? Will someone at wikiHow say it was their site instead? Will the news story be corrected, or will it be picked up as is and spread around the net? Will a Wikipedia page "How to deliver a baby" be created now? (I'm sure that violates some policy...Wikipedia is not a How To manual, or some such) I guess someone needs to go back and ask the father what site he actually used, assuming he knows given the pressure he was under! And assuming he doesn't have better things to do now! |

True, but will someone from the WMF say it wasn't Wikipedia? Well, someone from the WMF could speculate that it wasn't Wikipedia, but that's not really the WMF's place, is it? Really, trying to find a ZOMG Wikipedia is evil!!! angle in this story is dumb; there are plenty of other places to find such angles, and you just make yourself look silly by trying to find one here. I think we can probably all agree that using any user-generated site to learn how to deliver a baby is an exceptionally bad idea, and ought to be done in the last resort only. Now, back to the AFD/abortion jokes. |

I think we can probably all agree that using any user-generated site to learn how to deliver a baby is an exceptionally bad idea, and ought to be done in the last resort only. Unfortunately, user-generated sites are the easiest ones to quickly find "information". The world desperately needs a better search engine. Once it gets one, Wikipedia very well may just fade away. (Yes, in this case, a 911 operator would have been a better source of information. I'm sure they have a well-tested "amateur home birth" script all ready to go.) (Oops, despite the appearance on myfoxla, might not have been in the United States. Still, they probably had a free emergency services number that could have been called. Maybe even more likely outside the United States. 999 would have helped him out free of charge, right?) This post has been edited by anthony: Fri 11th December 2009, 9:39pm |

If I wanted to say "Wikipedia is evil," I would have said that, but I didn't. If there was any point to my post, it was more like this: I think there is a faction of the media and society in general that think Wikipedia is awesome, and like to point that out any chance they get, even to the point of crediting Wikipedia for something it didn't do, which I think was done in this case. Re the WMF's place, does "Wikipedia" have any official representatives other than those at the WMF? If there was an erroneous news story that was negative towards Wikipedia, rather than positive, who do you think would come forward to correct that? The article now says it was wikiHow. Nice. But the headline still says Wikipedia. |
