QUOTE(RDH(Ghost In The Machine) @ Mon 28th December 2009, 8:50pm) *

Getting banned is a good way to go...and easy.

But should you chose this route, try to go out like a hero and not a punk.
Undo a whole slew of unjust blocks. Champion a righteous, but unpopular, cause. Speak out against and stand up to the abusers.

Mind you, nothing in your past history leads me to believe you would do any of this, Doc.
But I am prepared to be pleasantly surprised.

RDH also appears to be solidifying his legacy as a wiki addict.

I approve!

I can give anyone instructions on how to be indefinitely banned immediately if anyone wants to do so ... I am expert in it. biggrin.gif

and be so disgusted by the idiocy of the Wikipeedian elite that one would want to remain off it.

QUOTE(Doc glasgow @ Sat 26th December 2009, 8:27pm) *

OK, my early new year's resolution was to quit Wikipedia. Did so on Christmas Eve.

Now, before the cynics trout slap me, I know I've done this several times before. I've even been free of Wikipedia for months on end, but I've always ended up back on the crack.

In the past:
I've tried scrambling may passwords - that didn't work.
I've tried deleting stuff to piss people off and may returning more messy - that didn't work.

So, I see on this forum are some people who've tried and failed (Alison) and some people who actually succeeded (Kelly). Ignoring the involuntary banned users, any advice on the does and don't of kicking this unhealthy habit for good?

Should I avoid WR too?

I've done this with forums I was addicted to - Change your account's email address to a single purpose email account that is easy to delete (ex. CareMail). Scramble your password, then delete the email account associated with your password (so you can't recover it).

Either that or get yourself permanently banned from the site somehow.

Or in fewer steps you could just change the e-mail field to blank, making your WP account unrecoverable in the event of password loss.

The password "recovery" feature is only helpful for those who forgot their password (or lost the index card or text file on which they stored it because it was too long and random to remember etc.)

Thus if somebody else cracks your account and quickly thinks to disassociate it from your e-mail address, you're shit outta luck.

Here's an idea:

You could go and stir up trouble on Twitter instead.

Just an idea...... smile.gif

I think the applicable phrase is "even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut".

And what have squirrels ever done to you to deserve such an invidious comparison?

Found his nut?

Hmm. Well another idea is to install the Leechblock addon for Firefox (it lets you choose how many minutes per day you're allowed to visit a site before it blocks it on your browser). I permblocked all my addictive sites on IE and use Leechblock for Firefox.

But if you're really determined, you can get around Leechblock using a proxy.

I tried a firefox add-on which lets you block sites (for another site that annoyed me, not wiki) but you can just remove a site from the list. biggrin.gif

You can change the settings to lock yourself out of the addon options during the times the site is blocked.

What is the problem here?

All you have to do is conduct yourself in a consistently ethical and scholarly way — and you are guaranteed to manifest a pattern of behavior that will get each and every account you open profiled out of Wikiputia on a rail in a half-dozen switches of the flip or less.

You'll eventually get bored with that, and prest-o change-o, you will find yourself grown up and out of it.

I'm gonna try an experiment with my LeechBlock addon and get back to you if it goes according to plan.
