Norwegian Elkhound

QUOTE(Wikipedia)
The AKC breed name "Norwegian Elkhound" is a direct translation from its original Norwegian name "Norsk Elghund," meaning "Norwegian moose dog."

I'm not quite sure this is what "direct translation" means.

BTW, these dogs are awesome. I had one.

Elg = moose. They hunt moose with these dogs in Norway.

Elk in English is a big deer-like animal that is not the same thing Norwegians think of when they say "Elg".

A direct translation would be moosehound.

I do not understand this. My dictionary says that a moose is an elk.
