Kurt,

I registered on OpenCycle a while back, and had naturally been thinking about transporting some of the articles that I principally authored on Wikipedia over to your site, but then I got befuddled by the implications of the different licensing protocols that you are using. Can you or anybody who knows about these things give me the Dummy's Guide to Open Content Licenses with regard to that issue?

Gratia in futuro ...

From what I understand the GDFL and the by-sa2.5 are indeed compatble, but Kurt doesn't just want to fork Wikipedia. I'd say for the Charles Pierce article we should make exceptions, since it's being lynch-fucked on WP by lunatics.

Well, CC-by-sa 2.0...everything I've found indicates that 2.5 is indeed compatible with GFDL, though the FSF does not appear to have made a statement one way or another.

However, even so, it is my understanding that to offer content under a license other than that under which it was originally offered requires the explicit action of the copyright owner. Because of this, Opencycle only allows you to copy content from Wikipedia for which you are the sole author, because you are then the sole owner of the copyright to that content. I have done this myself many times for articles I have created--many times I have had to go back several revisions and remove a lot of content to make sure I'm only adding stuff I authored.

We do this for a reason--as Elaragirl intended, when I started Opencycle I wanted it to be completely separate, rather than just a fork of Wikipedia. Using different licenses is one of the means by which that is ensured.

OpenCycle seems to have disappeared into the Øzone.

Does anyone know what happened to it?

You still own all of your contributions, you're simply allowing people to use them under X license. If you wrote "Batteries are white cloud puffs", you could license that phrase under the GFDL and then also license it phrase the CC-BY-SA. Anyone that used either license could use what you wrote in their project. The problem is other people. Theoretically, the anon user who corrected a typo could sue you for violating the GFDL, so if you want to be completely safe and legal you need to use only what you personally contributed.

Someone must have written some sort of "Make a copy of only what person X contributed" program by now. I have no idea what it would be called though. Contributions extractor? Filter?

There is a link on the bottom of the page "Why am I seeing this page" that is a mailto: to what is probably the spammy rat who would be willing to sell someone their own domain name.

Another failed attempt to out-wiki Wikipedia has failed...next?

When will people understand that wiki models do not work unless the the subject area and the number of editors is strictly controlled?

Well, that depends on how you define "working". If your goal isn't to produce anything reliable, then a wiki model may be just fine.

Yeah yeah, everyone has their own ideas. More control, less control, different kinds of control, etc.

Sooner or later someone will hit on something. We just need fewer planners and more tinkerers.

Not sure what is meant by a "tinkerer", but I am concerned that neither WP nor WR are exemplary of what Peter Senge calls a "Learning Organization".

The recently revised WMF Mission Statement says that their mission is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop neutral educational content and to effectively disseminate it around the world.

To my mind, any organization proposing to undertake such an ambitious mission must itself be an exemplary Learning Organization.

The site seems to be about motorcycles, and not particularly open. I don't know what it used to be.
