I gave this example to Grace Note:
an article says "X graduated from Harvard" using his explanation, we can't say that person is a "Harvard graduate" unless someone uses those exact words. According to his definition of original research, we can't connect the dots. I seriously doubt any writer for, say, the Guardian seriously thinks whether there's a difference between saying someone was "born to Jewish parents" or "someone was Jewish" (I'm talking about unconverted Jewish people). It's just a game of words. I agreed to his policy (yes, this is vulturell) because it is so obvious to me that once we get to the list of Irish-Americans, which he promised to me we will do, we are going to have to cut down 80% of the names. Very rarely, in my research, are Americans described as "Irish" or "Irish-Americans". More often than not it's of "Irish descent" or "Irish parents". |
