I found Christopher Elliott and sent off an email. He's uses the name Chris Elliott now, and is managing editor of The Guardian (London), the online version of which is Guardian Unlimited.

Dear Mr. Chris Elliott:

My web research suggests that you are the same as the "Christopher
Elliott" who shared this byline with Linda Mack. I would have
figured this out over a year ago, but neglected to try searching
for "Chris Elliott" in addition to "Christopher Elliott":

> Broker fights to clear name over Iran arms case; William Harper

> for issuing certificates of insurance, verifying the existence
> of missiles, that the prosecution claimed were bogus.

I have been trying to locate Linda Mack for over a year. Here is
a story about her that I had translated from Russian. It provides
some background on why she is of interest:
http://www.wikipedia-watch.org/russmag.html

Do you have any information on Ms. Mack's current whereabouts?
Do you know anything about her activities since 1994, which
was when she dropped off of the radar of all her London
associates, and then turned up in Canada in 2002 or earlier?

Have you ever met her in person? Does this photograph we have,
which comes from a mysterious source, look like her? (One
person who knew her at Cambridge says he's 95 percent sure
that this is her, but that's the only verification we have
so far): http://www.wikipedia-watch.org/hivemind.html#317

Dear Mr Brandt,

Thanks for your email. I am certainly the Chris Elliott who once knew Linda Mack but I haven't seen her in more than 13 years and I have no idea of her current whereabouts. I had not heard of the allegations at the time, and have no reason to believe them now, and so I am afraid I am unable to help you further.

Best wishes
Chris Elliott

Forensic analysis of Mr. Elliott's response:

Chris Elliott accessed his mailbox at The Guardian at 8:16 a.m. London time on Sunday morning, 2007-10-21, and clicked on the hivemind link inside the email that showed Linda Mack's picture.

He did not access the russmag.html link at all, then or later, unless he did it from a non-Guardian IP address more than three hours later (that was the first UK log entry for russmag.html since he read the email).

He did not respond to my email until two hours after I sent a fax on Monday morning, 2007-10-22, requesting an on-the-record interview on the matter. Before responding, he googled my name and clicked on my PageRank essay on Google-Watch, and clicked the home page of Wikipedia-Watch, but those were the only clicks from Google's links to my sites, and he didn't go deeper into either site.

I don't believe him when he says that he doesn't know anything. You'd think a professional journalist would be a bit more interested in the matter, and a bit more conversant in his email response. But at least I tried.

Daniel, even if he knew her on a professional basis for a short time and had her work as a researcher or consultant on a story that doesn't necessarily mean he would know anything about what we know about Salinger/Cooley allegations does it? Journalists must work with numerous different researchers and freelancers all the time I imagine.

Just because someone says that they don't know anything doesn't mean that they secretly do and are just hiding it. It could just be that they really don't know anything. He replied, and unless there's something else then I think its quite likely that that is the case.

If you read Linda Mack's version of Life With Pierre, which disgustingly is still available on a Wikipedia scraper, then yes, I suppose one can understand that Chris Elliott was ignorant of the matter. Mr. Elliott is apparently closer to a managing editor than an investigative reporter — his job is to put out internal fires, not start external ones. But I still find it odd that he isn't at all interested, even when someone offers him evidence about his former associate, Linda Mack, on a silver platter.

My impression is that he smells a mess and doesn't want any part of it. Yes, he knows LM, but he doesn't necessarily care if she's become the scourge of WP or even whether she assisted MI-5 or whatever. Nor is he interested in looking her up to share old times. Perhaps he neither likes her enough to reminisce nor hates her enough to want to lynch her. If anything, I sense apathy and an unwillingness to dirty his hands, combined with a general distaste for participating in what he may see as a witch hunt against a former colleague. Either that, or he's a Soviet Super-Spy Mole who's been masterminding the takeover of WP for decades. Me, I'll stick with Occam's razor on this one.

Perhaps she's as distasteful a person in "real life" as she is on WP, and thus Mr. Elliott is simply glad to be rid of her?

For all we know he could have just talked to her via phone/fax and never even met her in person. I think the fact that this is only newspaper article that we have ever found that had L. Mack's name on it suggests that she was only ever a researcher not a full blown journalist and they often don't get credited anyway. In fact I've completely forgotten what this article was about- reminder please Daniel?

The opening is quoted in Daniel Brandt's e-mail. It's about William Harper fighting to clear his name after his conviction over an alleged fraud involving the sale of anti-tank missiles to Iran. I found it in a subscription-only database covering all major British newspapers from the early 1990s; I also searched the Times' own archives for dates before that. (And no, nothing for L. Mack.)

The entire article is worth repeating. It has a British intelligence angle (but it's MI6, not MI5). It's almost like Elliott and Mack are scolding the judge (it's mentioned twice in the article) for not telling the jury that John Taylor was an MI6 agent. And there's a mention of Abu Nidal. You may recall that one sentence from John Cooley read, "Later, after we had been working with Jordanian intelligence, she befriended one of their officers who came to London to ferret out Abu Nidal's bank accounts."

Broker fights to clear name over Iran arms case; William Harper

The Times (London); Apr 12, 1994; Christopher Elliott and Linda Mack

A FORMER Lloyd's insurance broker begins a High Court battle this morning to clear his name after his conviction in 1988 over an alleged Pounds 18 million fraud involving the sale of 5,000 TOW anti-tank missiles to Iran.

William Harper is seeking leave to appeal against his conviction for issuing certificates of insurance, verifying the existence of missiles, that the prosecution claimed were bogus.

He was one of three men convicted. Two others were acquitted in a trial that has parallels with the Matrix Churchill case; one of the two, John Taylor, a businessman and arms dealer, was an MI6 agent. The judge was told but the information was withheld from the jury.

Mr Taylor was acquitted but three associates Lt Col Eric Matson, Mr Harper and Michael Aspin were convicted and served sentences of between two and six years. A fifth defendant, Keith Flatman, a solicitor, was acquitted on the orders of a judge who said that he had no case to answer. All five had denied conspiring to obtain property by deception.

At their trial Mr Taylor, Matson, Harper and Aspin were accused of having fabricated an alleged involvement with Oliver North, the American military commander questioned by Congress over the "Irangate" affair. The prosecution said that the deal fell through because there had never been any missiles to sell and that the operation was a fraud.

In a further twist, documents shown to The Times reveal that another man involved in the Iranians' abortive attempt to aquire anti-tank missiles, Ben Banerjee, was a middle man for the Abu Nidal terrorist group, which had close links with the Iraqis.

He was never charged and died in March, 1991. Documents show that he helped the terrorist group to set up an account at the now collapsed Bank of Credit and Commerce International.

Mr Bannerjee owned two Buckinghamshire companies that regularly supplied arms to Abu Nidal. Documents submitted during the trial of the five men show that one of Mr Bannerjee's companies was involved in the 1985 plan to supply 5,000 TOW missiles to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

The three convicted defendants claimed that Mr Banerjee was the link between them and Lt Col North, who was said to have initiated the deal to improve relations with Iran. The deal fell through, the men claimed, because Lt Col North backed away from it.

The jury was not told that Mr Taylor, now aged 60, an MI6 agent for ten years, had been told by his handler to proceed with the deal.

And, of course, SlimVirgin is fixated on Abu Nidal (did I even have to bother to point this out by now?):

Check this out. On a WP page, "Slim" posts information of her "stalking" of IP addresses on "Usenet". So it's OK to post on WP information you have gathered via your own research on Usenet for tracing IP addresses?

That sounds like something a WordBomb would get banned for. SV is a stalker? Who knew!

I like the "I object to sockpuppets" statement by SlimV/Slim/SlimVirgin/SweetBlueWater/Sunsplash.

Linda and I agree on that.

Sockpuppet?

Weed Harper, I found what appears to be some posts of yours on Usenet, and they were sent from IP address 64.30.208.48, which was recently blocked from Wikipedia for posting unverifiable LaRouche material. Have you been posting to Wikipedia using user:64.30.208.48 as a sockpuppet? The same IP address, which belongs to Link Line Communications, has been reported for sending pro-LaRouche spam around the Web. I'm posting below two of the pro-LaRouche Usenet posts I found that use the same IP address, one from Weed Harper and one from Ralph Gibbons.

I'd appreciate your comments on this. I don't mind debating with genuine editors, even if I strongly disagree with them, but it gets a bit much when the same editor is sending out multiple posts with different user names. I'm beginning to think that Weed Harper, Herschelkrustofksy and C Colden may be the same person. You should be aware, when posting on Usenet, that the combination of the IP address, date, time and message ID makes the message traceable back to a specfic computer. It's one of the disadvantages of Usenet.

Once again, I ask you please to stay on Wikipedia as a genuine contributer. Slim 07:36, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)

The computers I use are shared with 50-60 other people. And, you are maniacal about this anti-LaRouche activism. Why can't you simply debate the issues? Weed Harper 16:04, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I am not in the slightest bit "maniacal" about the LaRouche issue, nor am I an anti-LaRouche activist. I just don't want to see unverfiable serve-serving propaganda in Wikipedia. I have tried to debate the issues. That's one of the reasons I object to sock puppets, because it makes the debate very time-consuming having to address four people, when in fact they are only one or two. Your IP address may be used by 50 other people, but I don't believe it's pure cooncidence that one of those other 50 just happened to post pro-LaRouche material to Wikipedia, on exactly the same article as your associates Herschel and C Colden, within the same day or so. Anyway, as I said before, I have no time to debate these things with you or them anymore. Please abide by the spirit of Wikipedia, as well as the arbitration rulings on insertion of LaRouche original research. Slim 17:57, Dec 1, 2004 (UTC)

I remember they banned one of Blissyu2's accounts due to internet stalking of usenet.

More Slimmy Hypocrisy. Here she busts "WeedHarper" for doing what Gary Weiss did with his LastExit/Mantanmoreland/TomStoner/DoRight sock show.

Of course when she relayed WordBomb's email to her on to Weiss, she didn't mention this ;-)

User accounts

A request was made recently to the developers regarding the relationship, if any, between the user accounts User:Herschelkrustofsky, User:Weed Harper and User:C Colden. The reply from the developers is: "On technical evidence, combined with similarity in posting patterns, Herschelkrustofsky and Weed Harper can be considered to be operated by the same person. C Colden is either the same person or working in coordination with them, but is not *firmly* established to be the same person." Assuming this is correct, it would be appreciated if you would choose either the Herschelkrustofsky or Weed Harper account to edit the LaRouche pages.

***** There is no policy against using multiple accounts, but they shouldn't be used to create the impression of more support for a position than really exists, or to get round 3RR violations. *****

Alternatively, if you feel the technical information is misleading, any light you can shed on the relationship between the accounts would be helpful. Many thanks, SlimVirgin 01:25, Jan 24, 2005 (UTC)

Interesting. Poetlister et. al. were banned on technical evidence yet nobody has ever suggested that developers were consulted.

I'm guessing this dates from a period before they had special purpose tools like CheckUser.

Not to mention special purpose tools like Jayjg.
