Full Version: BLP Victims List: Help Wanted

I've got my victims page on MWB and WP, but I need more names. And for that I need your help.

List here the biographies of those articles which have received lasting serious vandalism. None of the "MARK IS A FAT FAGGOT AND SHOULD DIAF" sort of stuff. Rather, the believable stuff that sat for a while.

I'm sure many of you have come upon them, there are probably a few already listed in this forum, which I plan to look through soon, but for the purposes of organization, lets gather them all here.

Many thanks in advance.

...articles which have received lasting serious vandalism. ... the believable stuff that sat for a while.

Is there a cutoff duration? Like, more than 24 hours, more than a week, more than 30 days, that sort of thing?

Also, would you be against the idea of my changing the thread title to something like "BLP Victims List: Help Wanted?" You might get a few more eyeballs that way. I know I, for one, am probably incapable of looking "alive" in any real sense of the word... confused.gif

Another good example might be someone like Kenney Mencher - less famous, but the linked-to diff was up for about two weeks. Whether or not he "suffered real-world consequences" is debatable, of course... but it always is, I suppose.

Matt Sanchez, a right-wing blogger who had appeared in gay porn flicks in the early 1990s, has been the subject of endless BLP issues, with Sanchez editing out stuff and challenging a lot of assertions. Sanchez himself has been part a Wikipedia editor under a number of names and has been banned for a while, though now he is on-Wiki but his status is somewhat hazy. Durova is his mentor, which may only add to the confusion.

No real restrictions. Not being famous is not an issue. The less-notable, the better really; but I want everything. As for the title, change away.

there are various userpages and even some namespace pages on Wikipedia detailing some of the worst offences.

I don't remember where it is here on WR, but wasn't there some nonsense with that goofball admin Chase Me Ladies, I'm the Cavalry -- someone put his biographical material into an article about someone who shared his real-life name?

Do you know where the relevant thread for Patrick Byrne's biography is? Also, thanks. I pulled up Tom Brokaw's info and put it into my Victims page.

Yes, I know. Help gathering links is what I'm looking for.

I'm not able to find what happened with this bio. The Sanchez thread opens with an off-site link that is currently down.

I hate to say it, but a list of victims, if it's intended to really engender sympathy and compassion for those on the list, couldn't possibly include Sanchez. That's not to say he hasn't been victimized, but he is in no way a sympathetic figure, I'm afraid.

Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Bluemarine/Evidence (prior to blanking) is the prescribed reading here.

Yes, but if we allow BLPs as internet-punishments for "unsympathetic" characters, we've already lost. Most people appear unsympathetic to somebody. Even Sarah Palin and Glen Beck, who I've been hoping will mate like Pandas, in order to perpetuate a dying breed...

Some are more sympathetic than others, to be sure, but there will always be those who say the defamed parties deserve it.

Hell, the people adding the junk in the first place will be first on line for that.

I do agree, however, that Giovanni is not a sympathetic figure. My opinion is that he's scum. I have no knowledge of Sanchez.

He's also known as "Dirty Sanchez." Has a moustache you don't want to look too closely at.

Didn't Kohs et al. have a spreadsheet of US congresspersons, detailing the vandalism and how long it lasted?

Most of that stuff isn't exactly damaging to the subjects, since they're very high profile and most of it is obvious vandalism. The study was good for putting the lie to the myth that Wikipedia self-corrects quickly, but I don't think it's exactly what Lara's going for.

Lara, are these pages google indexed? I know a few I could add to that, but I'd want to ask the subjects first if they minded it being dug up and displayed on the internet.

what's your suggestion? did you have anything of value to add? That spreadsheet has a duration column that might be useful.

I was going to look for that tonight, TC. Thank you. As SI pointed out, it's not all damaging, but some of it may have been bad, and the duration is indeed important information to look at.

And SI, as far as I know, all BLPs are indexed. Considering the context of this thread and the fact that we're highlighting these edits as vandalism in order to hopefully work toward a remedy, I'm not sure I see the point in attempting to contact people who may or may not even realize that such vandalism occurred. But do what you're compelled to.

Larry Sanger's great contribution to the Sum Of All Human Knowledge, Nude celebrities on the Internet, has been a coatrack for assorted dubious claims since Nupedia days; although it's been cleaned up somewhat in the wake of its AFD nomination, it'll no doubt slip back at some point.
