Memory. The sick irony of Goldwater losing from being painted as a warmonger, only to have peace-nic LBJ procede to use a ridiculous pretext, without fact-checking, to get us into a dumber and nastier and more useless war than anything we've had since, right up till 2003.
Tonkin Gulf was a lot like Saddam's WMDs, actually. If you want to pick a war, any excuse will do.
