The Wikipedia is unique within the voluntary sector in that it is the only 501 registered NPO where you get to whack off as you work, it is perfectly acceptable to upload your own fuck pictures and spending time look at other people's coital action. I am of the strong conviction that the best model from which to analyze the Wikipedia is as a cult based entity similar to new religious movements and keep being astonished by the similarities. No wonder it has an uneasy relationship with Scientology in which it must see part of itself mirrored ... except the beatings and abuse are virtual rather than real and no one on the Wikipedia is trained up in using military grade weaponry. Yet.
One of the most typical modus operandis cults carry on, is the encultation of young people when they are away from home for the first time and more vulnerable to group and cult dynamics, i.e. "being sucked in". The cultic meme wants to consume your child's mind for life, passing on its sugar wrapped mental virus.
From the cult's point of view, young people are useful because they have lots of energy, no responsibilities and free time to be commandeered by the cult. Time and energy better spent into their own personal and professional development is usurp and capitalized by the cult for its own benefit ... often just propping up natural entropic decline.
Everyone from established churches to the most extreme cults have feeding frenzies around Freshers' Day time ... and now the Wikipedia rolls up its stall too. Part of the eroto-toxic, sugar-coated bait on the Wikipedia is seemingly "masturbate". It works for many!
Cults also operate on the basis a small percentage of such encultee will stick and become lifelong supporters knowing that most will drop off in a matter of months or a couple of years and so they have to keep generating "fresh blood" to keep them alive. (Middle aged retirees are also prime volunteer targets.)
So, I am looking at the role of the Campus Team Coordinator as a junior cult recruiter targeting young people, the use of free intern laborers and "Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors" and "students in work study". Look at the roles of the intern, it give a little insight into the development of an intelligence department within the Wiki-cult. I wonder which intern gets to watch us?

Although I stand by the critique of typical cult dynamics, it also reminds me greatly of the Russia-based Soviet era "student" and "peace groups" that used to flood further education with their sincere but amateur looking invitations and propaganda. It is all about fighting over and conquering mental real estate.
