Everyone will know by now that Google Knol is being phased out.

I just used the Migration Assistant to move all my knols over to the WordPress Annotum theme, creating a blog named “Inquiry Into Inquiry” —

• Inquiry Into Inquiry

So far, so good …

Well, I should have known that was too good to be true.

Everything ported over really nice from Knol to Annotum, but the first time you try to edit an article it turns all the formatting and links to utter hash.

Trying again with another blog —

Actually I'm surprised it worked at all.

I've never done any real blogging before, preferring to work on wikis, so this is all new to me.

Flushed out the mess on Inquiry Into Inquiry with a couple iterations of the Export/Import tools on Annotum and Knol, posted a bug note to the support page, and wrote a few test posts.

I'll save Inquiry Into Inquiry for working on logic, math, philosophy stuff and use the Jon Awbrey blog for general nonsense and political animadversions.

From what it promises, Annotum looks interesting, with more support for collaboration and peer review, so they say.

We'll see …

Sorry dude.

I'm really disappointed with the way Google starts and stops things. Stuff one would hope would be around for decades is gone in a year or two. It's like they slap a "Beta" tag on the name and it's an excuse for low expectations.

My recommendation is you pony up the money and host a site yourself. Slightly more security that way. Also I doubt Kohs would screw you over. Wikipedia Review it up.

It looks like the Annotum developers are following the fashion of the day in rolling out their platform first and testing it later. There doesn't appear to be any way to edit the articles ported over from Knol to Annotum without reducing them to utter hash, so I copied all my articles to another Annotum blog and will leave them be until such time as the Annotum developers get the bugs out of their system. In the meantime the articles will be archived here —

I gave up trying to convert my Knol articles into Annotum articles. The latter platform is too undeveloped at the present time to allow for continued development of the imported articles. The best I could manage was archiving static copies of the Knol articles on one blog, then starting a new blog under a standard WordPress theme as a place to keep working on their content.

Here's the blog where I'll keep the archived articles:

Thanks …

Nothing much to say about Wikiputia …

It seems strange to me now that I ever got involved with a mass-mediocracy mash-up like that …

It isn't the sort of thing I ever cared about before.

So Jon, I wonder if you have any insights into the Wisconsin recall election?

PPS: I don't care what any of the rest of you internet right-wing shitheads think. Just asking Jon to comment.

The conventional wisdom on most of my cheese feeds is that the Dems flubbed it when they picked Barrett, as most voters felt insulted by the idea of a rerun.

It is, I think, the final death of WR that it now consists entirely of Jon Awbrey talking to himself … that and auto-posted news articles, anyway.
